"the new york times" reporting that the republican national committee, the national republican party has formed a brand-new election integrity committee, which is a group of 24 members of the rnc, newly tasked with developing legislative proposals on voting systems for the states. this election integrity committee at the national republican party is steered by a florida republican who still to this day refuses to say that president biden was legitimately elected. he advertised ways for people to attend the january 6th rally in washington that turned into a violent attack on the capitol. when voting in person in the state of georgia, you must have a photo id. it only makes sense for the same standard to apply to absentee ballots as well. for example, the november 2020 election saw a 350% increase in the use of absentee balloting, over 1.3 million absentee ballots total when compared to election day in 2018. this obviously led local election workers to have to process far more ballots using a time-consuming, labor-intensive and at times arbitrary process. by moving to a state issued id requirement instead of a signature match, georgia will dramatically streamline the verification process on absentee ballots. sb 202 also secures all ballot drop boxes around-the-clock, speeds up processing to ensure quicker election results, requires a security paper to allow for authentication of ballots, and allows the bipartisan state election board to have more oversight over counties who fail to follow state election laws. in contrary to the hyper-partisan rhetoric you may have heard inside and outside this gold dome, the facts are that this new law will

elections officials in georgia were carrying out an audit of the november election. in which joe biden had narrowly carried the state. president trump and his allies had been shouting that there was all this fraud and that the election was a fake, it was stolen. and so georgia's republican secretary of state said, okay, we'll do another audit to check the results again. and suddenly the president's chief of staff shows up at the civic center in cobb county where they're carrying out this audit. the visit was totally unannounced, totally out of the blue. the only reason we know it happened was that a local reporter with the atlanta journal constitution saw trump's chief of staff mark meadows and his secret service agents swoop into the building and they snapped a picture of him being intercepted in the hallway by state election officials who did not allow him into the room where the audit was happening. but we now know that what mark meadows did get that day were some very useful phone numbers. while he was there sniffing around for voter fraud in cobb county he met a

georgia and alabama saw the worst of the damage. in is the scene. in is noonan, georgia. today where emergency crews have been going door to door since this morning. our meteorologist derek van dam is on the seen in birmingham, alabama, another hard-hit area. tell me who you've been talking to and what you're seeing there. >> reporter: yeah, brooke. we've witnessed severe damage in the eagle points community, a suburb of birmingham. the damage here is supportive of an ef-2 tornado. winds of at least 111 miles an hour. look at what that did to this resident's home behind us. completely tearing the roof off the top of the house. we have spoken to the residents who live here. they bunkered down within an interior shelter. put helmets on top of their head to provide any protection they could. and then the skies opened up because the roof fell and they could see right into the clouds and the wind, leaving them exposed to the elements. we saw homes completely ripped off their foundation. it's been a very difficult day for the residents of this particular area. there has been a

asking them to stand up and support georgia voters. late last night republicans in the state signalled they will back down from some of those proposals. today activists in the state received a boost when the metro chamber of commerce laid out their concerns with voters. our interests in the issues began long ago reflecting our bellerive every eligible georgia voter should engage in the voting process. changes to the process could come by the way as early as monday when they are expected to meet and vote on the bills. as republicans appear to be retreating from their opposition to absentee voting many of the other proposed restrictions remain. joining us is latasha brown, the group that has been campaigning to come out against the legislation. this is remarkable. you were able to go out there and you were able to say. i saw it on social media. it spread quickly to say you have employees. you have customers that live in the state of georgia. i think that is what happens when a community comes together. organizations, nonprofit groups and

urging georgia voters to contact ceos and let them know we expect them to support georgia voters like we support them. to use their power and muscle to turn back the republican bills and make voting harder. first a generic statement supporting free and fair elections and then they said they -- although the chamber would not say specifically what they opposed. big companies like coca-cola and home depot then told the "washington post" they were aligned with the chamber of commerce on the issue. home depot called back to clarify saying what they said does not mean they are opposed to the new roll backs the republicans are moving through the state. voting rights advocates are not having this is aing now that the platitudes should make every voter furious. they want legitimate and muscular support to turn back the bills that will otherwise pass. the big business community is feeling the pressure. just steamrolling ahead with this stuff. we are seeing versions of that in every state. in every republican controlled state. going everywhere republicans are trying to rip up voting rights. the

republicans in the georgia legislature largely sided with president trump when he told georgia officials in november and december that they needed to not certify the vote in democratic-leaning counties, throw out ballots that skewed towards president biden. georgia republicans agreed with trump on that for the most part. they jeered at their governor. they screamed at their secretary of state. they wanted to do what trump was demanding. so no matter how much everybody huffed and puffed they didn't have the ability to do what georgia and republicans in the legislature were saying they should do. and the georgia republicans in the legislature were saying they should do. well, georgia republicans in the legislature just gave themselves the authority to do what trump was demanding. fulton county's election board has been replaced. they are going to do something different with those ballots from here on out. and no, that vote is not going to be satisfied. waiting for statewide results out of georgia? georgia had the temerity to vote democratic for a president and then democratic for two u.s.
