can you make it quicker, the j&j? >> they can make it at high yields so, you know, with a reasonably sized bioreactor they can churn out a tremendous amount of vaccine. the rate is the fill finishing, getting it into viles. there is a global shortage of fill finishing certainly in the country but around the world very efficient to manufacture. >> damn, this is all good. this is all good i haven't heard anything -- right? this is all good >> we're going to have tremendous supply coming into the market there's a possibility we'll have 15 million doses in the market this week. they're going to ship 4 million doses. it could be upwards of 20 million doses. pfizer will go from 5 to 10 million doses in a week. i'm not sure if it's this week or next week they'll convert and dramatically increase the spry. once we're at 20 million doses in the market, that's the ability to vaccinate 12 million new people a week. we're easily going to hit the benchmark we talked about, which is being able to vaccinate 100 million people by the

j&j declined to comment. merck saying it remains steadfast in their commitment to the global response to the pandemic and preparing to address future pandemics merck was developing two covid vaccines itself but stopped development of those as they saw early results suggesting they didn't generate a strong enough immune response. we talked with j&j's ceo yesterday and asked him about manufacturing of the vaccine here's what he said. >> whenever you do something like this, it's never a linear shot you are always going to have it. that should reinforce our commitment to quality, to following the right processes, and we're very confident in our ability to hit the objectives. >> guys, experts in the space pointing out to me ramping up manufacturing to this kind of volume is something that normally takes five to eight years. so what we are seeing really is kind of miraculous and "the washington post" article pointing out it signals confidence in the j&j vaccine and perhaps that the biden administration sees a bigge

there's 100 million that j&j has engaged with with the u.s. government already, and the president wants to double that. the announcement coming as those two individuals, the ceos of j&j and merck, will be with the president as well. as you know, merck and johnson & johnson have teamed up to manufacture j&j's covid-19 one-shot dose. the keyworded today, liz, from the white house as to why the president is instructing hhs to do this is flexibility. watch. >> this order allows for the president to plan for the future in the latter part of the year. this is wartime. and as facts still emerge, it gives us maximum flexibility for our upcoming needs. >> reporter: liz, the administration says at this point still that it will be at the end of may in which every american adult who wants a vaccine will be able to receive one at that point. the additional 100 million doses that are going to be announced here momentarily are for the back half of this year, the back half of 2021. the white house press secretary saying a little while ago that president biden

same way we have done with j&j. we waited as the fda and the cdc were evaluating the results of the studies. we got ready to roll out the vaccines, and we were able to roll it out the following day after it was approved to start shipping. i think the most important part is to make sure everybody is getting vaccinated when their turn is coming. we are creating so many opportunities for people to get vaccinated, whether it is at federal retail pharmacies, whether it is at community vaccination centers, we mentioned the one in new york, there are many of those across the country, actually 600 across the country. we are working with health centers, mobile clinics. there are multiple opportunities and we want to encourage as many people to get vaccinated as possible. chelsea: i think, dr. choucair, what you were just saying about ensuring -- we always not only listen to, but follow the science, science is hugely important. i do, though, want to ask candidly if you have any idea how many people have been part of our vacci

j&j and merck are working together to get j&j's new single-dose vaccine out to the public. they're big rivals in this. merck separately, in a company it acquired in a takeover about a year ago, is looking at a trial of a covid-19 drug that company was working on, then there is this separate optimism that j&j says it can put up 10 million doses of its vaccine within just days. this on the heels of good news that we're hearing on those getting vaccinations period, 245 million worldwide, about 77 million in the united states. and in britain, an interesting development that just came to me here, that 29% of london residents have the antibodies found to be a defense against covid-19. that's more than one out of three londoners who are in that position. that is the kind of development they like to focus on when they talk about herd immunity. positive developments, all. what it means for the economy and the markets, we're going to be exploring that with senator chuck grassley and whether in an environment like that you need the biggest stimulus package the democrats are pushing. h

j. because of this relationship, we will have enough vaccine to vaccinate all adults in the country by the end of may. one thing to keep in niend, having vaccines is not enough to getting everybody vaccinated. so it's really important that we continue to double down on our efforts to the campaign to get shots into people's arms and getting the rest of the country vaccinated. >> i do think it's important to, arguably, belabor what you said. it is really extraordinary kind of what the administration has enabled our pharmaceutical partners to produce at this velocity, to work with kind of partners who weren't kind of part of the r&d of developing the vaccines. it's really amazing. yet, as you just said, while amazing, you know, it's not sufficient to ensure that kind of those vaccines then turn into vaccinations. and while there has been a lot of attention paid to kind of hesitancy within black american communities, within indigenous american communities, we now have quite a bit of data say

j, just one. well, there's millions of people that are going to feel that way and be proud to have -- be in a position that they have the ability to get the kind of help that they need. seven weeks ago only 8% of the seniors, those most vulnerable to covid-19 received a vaccination. today 60% of the people over the age of 65 or older have received at least one shot, and that's because this is the population that represents 80% of the covid-19 deaths. we've opened -- we've opened support and opened -- excuse me, and supported more than 500 community vaccination sites. that's more than -- and then they are administering hundreds of thousands of shots a day, and for folks who aren't near a pharmacy or mass vaccination center, we're deploying mobile clinics like advance that go into places to meet the folks where they live. we're also supplying vaccines to community health centers to reach those who have been hit the hardest and suffered the most, especially black, latino, native american in rural com

what are you doing to prepare for the coming lull in the j&j's supply and how will that impact places that have already incorporated this in their vaccination operations? secondly, you spent time stressing that j&j is equal to the other vaccines and everyone should take it, but we have heard detroit's mayor saying that he is declining the initial allotment in part because he believes that pfizer and moderna are better vaccines. what exactly do you guys plan to do to counter this type of messaging, especially when it comes from a local official? mr. slavitt: i will ask dr. fauci to talk about the comparability of these three very successful vaccines. it is important to clarify that that was not actually the mayor's intent and not the mayor's comment. we have been in dialogue with mayor duggan who said that was not what he said, or however it was reported. in fact, he is very eager for the johnson & johnson vaccine, and i think we would reiterate the message that for all of us, the first vaccine we have an opportunity to take makes absolute sense to take, so thank you for allowing us to

so i'm really glad that merck was able to step up and help j&j and they were willing to do that. and credit to the white house for brokering that. >> when you talk about ramp up vaccine development quickly, i mean, what is the time frame on that? what is quickly in the production of vaccine? what does that mean in that world? >> yeah. you know, vaccines are a complicated process. they're among the most complicated pharmaceuticals we have. it isn't a quick, quick fix because you have to validate the production facilities. you have to go through inspections. you probably have to get the fda in there to help confirm the validation and help with the validation. so it's not like all of a sudden we're going to have 200 million doses the week after the 3.9 million come along. but at least it provides some backup support to know that j&j can meet its production demands, which may have been unclear prior to that. >> if you were in charge of the messaging campaign on the vaccines, on the response to the virus right now, what would you be telling the american public? >> there's a good news

j did. and the ultimate, the reality of this difference is really not meaningful for people. because what j&j is saying, we're not quite as effective maybe as suppressing mild disease as the other two are although we don't even know that entirely. but we're equally as effective in keeping people from dying and keeping them out of the icu. take whatever you can get and as quickly as you can get it. >> last, we have a complication today from the catholic church. some catholic bishops are saying their parishioners should avoid johnson & johnson if they can because they call it a morally compromised vaccine because of its abortion derived cell lines. some cooler heads have prevailed in the church and told people if you have a chance for the j&j, you're not making a moral decision by getting it. i won't drag you into religion, doctor, but how should we view this? >> so, brian, this is not the first religion that has gone against public health principles. we had evangelical churches throughout the

if they are getting the j&j one, at least. >> that's it. and that's exciting news for the country and certainly for anyone who manages to get that shot in the arm. of course, the question is when those johnson & johnson vaccines will finally go into arms. we know that texas is expecting 24,000 doses like you say. those will be split between harris county, which is home to houston and dallas. this mass vaccination site, this fema vaccination site is expecting to get those johnson & johnson vaccines. they just don't know when. and they don't know when they'll be able to go into arms. but we do know we've heard from the mayors of both dallas and houston, and they said that they will be prioritizing underprivileged, underserved populations to get that single dose vaccine, for example. folks in jails or the homeless population. and that's because it's so much easier to administer just that one dose. you don't have to worry about scheduling follow-up appointments and sort of that is what they're going to be prioritizing for that single dose vacci
