i and -- and i am happy to see you here at punchbowl. anna: thank you. we appreciate it. we pressed ron klain on many issues. a couple things stood out to me, but what is your top line? what was your take away hearing from him about 50 days into this white house? lisa: i was struck i his competency. i was struck by his humility. and i think because it is such a contrast to what we have seen, not just in the trump administration, but other administrations as well create as a former tea, i couldn't stop thinking about things. one was what they have been able to do in this short time. from the green room, we said for them, this is very like the passage of obama care. this is huge. at to be able to do this in such a short time, experience matters. being prepared matters. competency matters. in the way they came in was amazing. that just his description, i am a staffer, and i am here. and jake, you were pushing him, it wasn't as spicy as the oprah interview. but you were getting there. jake: [laughter] no one has ever accused me of being nearly as good as oprah. lisa: it is go

rephrasing the old fed punchbowl metaphor. decode this for us. >> reporter: well, it's not easy to decode sometimes in this case, kim, because you want to kind of keep the markets guessing and keep them off balance. that's what "the new york times" is talking about, keep the punchbowl on the table, but jay powell has built up a lot of trust that he wants to be more transparent with the goals by the u.s. federal reserve and, therefore, the u.s. treasury department at the same time. goal number one is job creation. we still have better than 9 million jobs lost since the start of the pandemic, the unemployment rate at 6.2%, they want to get that down to 3.5% by 2023 so they will continue to buy bonds, keep the interest rates low and look for hard evidence when it comes to jobs. let's take a listen. >> we will want to see that the labor markets have moved -- labor market conditions have moved, you know -- have made substantial progress toward maximum employment and inflation has made substantial progress toward the 2% goal. that's

when you say this in punchbowl news frequently, have to work with the congress that you have not the congress that you like. the congress joe biden has cannot do a $15 minimum wage no matter how much he would like to, no matter how much she -- they wish it could happen. look, i would say going forward with the future, it would be interesting to see how much they can do that as john manchin and bernie sanders on the same page and it's not a lot to be honest with you, stephanie. there's a lot not -- a lot of areas you can thread that needle. that will be -- that's the continuing story of this congress. joe biden, and john manchin with veto power over the entire democratic agenda. >> to that very point the next thing democrats want to do is get to infrastructure. treasury secretary janet yellen is already dropping the bread comes, preparing us that a tax hike could be on the way. it's one thing to get people excited about sending them a check. it's a totally different story when you're asking people, hey, i want to raise your taxes for infrastructure. >> yeah, it's going to be a tough s

this is the top of punchbowl news a.m. newsletter is us looking at infrastructure which is expected to be the next big legislative issue that this white house, although they aren't publicly saying it yet, is going to try to take on. and to your point, where will the republicans -- are they going to be kind of real brokers in this? and are you going to see susan collins try to make some kind of a deal here. joe manchin said he doesn't want it to just start off as a democrat-only reconciliation package. but i have a hard time seeing republicans really coming to the negotiating table in the long-term. they've clearly decided that their biggest strength together and one of the only things they agree on is they want to be opposed to it. democrats are far. it will be very interesting to see the posture of what mitch mcconnell, the leader in the senate, how does he approach infrastructure? this is something that's really difficult. john boehner, a lot of republicans tried to do this in the past and infrastructure is a lot more co

we see the budget people are going to say, the uk is shooting itself in the foot by taking away the punchbowl before the party started. this is not a party we're talking about. this is recovery that needs to happen the uk has done a very, very good job one of the reasons why the u.s. is in the situation it is,it's much less efficient about providing that stimulus. a lot of people that deserve unemployment are not getting it. they have to take this shotgun approach, which is much, much less efficient it would be much better if they told people, look, if you end up making $100,000 next year, we'll tax this $1400 back from you instead they're giving it to anyone and it risks being a little inflationary and out of control. probably a good thing for markets. how the uk has handled this, i think few people could fault the performance of the uk during the performance of the coronavirus crisis when it comes to economic policies >> michael, you mentioned how all of this stimulus that's being pushed into the u.s. economy could ultimately be inflationary clearly that was a hot topic in markets last week
