amy: that was the aunt of daunte wright on cnn. state authorities have identified the officer who killed daunte wright as kimberly potter, a 26 year police veteran who served as the police union president for the department. she has been placed on administrative leave. on monday, the police chief in brooklyn center claimed potter accidentally pulled her gun instead of a taser. the police department also released body cam footage of the shooting. >> taser1 taser1 taser! i just shot him. amy: according to "the star tribune," daunte wright is the sixth person killed by brooklyn center police since 2012. five of the six have been men of color. brooklyn center mayor mike elliot, who is the town's first black mayor, spoke to reporters monday. >> our hearts are aching right now. we are in pain right now. we recognize this could not have happened at a worse time. we recognize this is happening at a time when our community, when all of america, indeed all of the world, is watching. -- is watching our community and that we are all collective

she knew daunte wright. when i heard that, this is how common place, in some lives, violence and death of loved ones is. she had worked at a school and daunte wright was a student there, and she knew him. and she was always george floyd's girlfriend. so she was invited as a guest. this isn't just sort of some public showing of solidarity. she knew the family and was invited to this funeral also. i mean, it just drives home the loss in some of these communities that have to deal with this all the time. >> it drives home how few degrees of separation there are between these communities and these families. and makes clear that this is -- this needs to be a national priority. you know, if you don't personally know the people involved, ask a couple of questions and you'll find out you do know somebody who does know them. that is, in fact, true. it's not going to be that hard to find. gwen carr, the mother of eric garner, who was killed in -- on the streets of new york in 2014 in a startlingly similar case where h

you attended daunte wright's funeral today. his family's attorney ben crump says the service sought to define wright's legacy. what do you hope his legacy will be? >> wolf, i was very fortunate to be in the numbers today at daunte's funeral. for me, it reenforced what we all heard about him. all of his family members talked about how much he was loved and how much he exuded love. everybody shared just how much he was the life of the party, how much his smile was just contagious and how bright his future was. i think his legacy is going to be that. i think his legacy is also going to be systemic change, because one thing we know for sure is that justice isn't just done in the courtroom. justice is systemic change, justice is passing the legislation that needs to be passed in the senate and signed by the president. justice also is local municipalities passing meaningful reform, changing how we do public safety and state governments once and for all passing meaningful reform. i think that's going to be daunte's legacy. >> were you

larry, i know you are at the week for daunte wright. but first, let's just get the reaction — the police community reaction to this federal investigation police practices? this move by the _ investigation police practices? ti 3 move by the attorney general of the us, merrick garland, has been largely welcomed here by the community. it's called a pardons and practice investigation, and during the case of derek chauvin, the prosecution made a big show of saying this was not about policing in the city, it was about one man, derek chauvin. at the people i speak to hear tell me it should have been, because one person told me the problems in the minneapolis police department are bone deep. what the investigation will uncover is whether there are systemic problems, if the police department uses unconstitutional means, they will review the response to protests, how it targets minorities or its reaction and response to the people with behavioural health problems, and recommend what to do about it. and there will be a report about that because

today is the lane to rest 20-year-old daunte wright. you had the convictions of derek chauvin, former minneapolis police officer who murdered george floyd, then you had the justice department announcing it was going to do a pattern practice investigation into the minneapolis police department. so many people have so much hope on one end because of the convictions, because of the quick charging of officer -- former officer potter, but at the same time they're not sure how wide that door -- how long or how wide that door will stay open and they'd like to see more, they'd like a better understanding where it's all going, they want to see basically equality, equality in the treatment by police officers. not just in extreme cases where a gun is pulled and someone dies but in every day transactions with police officers as well. a measure of respect when dealing with their own police department and that deadly force isn't the first thing that police officers use when they approach a black or african-american person in the street. so it's a lot

first, my condolences to the family of daunte wright. as a mother of a black son, i know all too often how fearful mothers can be when their sons leave their house. my son and i had the talk one too many times, too many times for me to remember. and to watch this energy in brooklyn center, minnesota, reminds me of ferguson. and i know that many of my friends who were front line protesters are having some traumatic experiences watching this play over and over and over again. and it's bringing back memories of the times that they spent on the streets of ferguson. >> i believe your son is 13 years old. how old was he when you first had your talk with him? >> he was about 6 or 7. because he goes to school in an all-white suburb. and i had to remind him that, you know, that these things can happen when, if a police officer pulls you over. and he told me at about 10, when he was walking with some friends in their neighborhood, they were stopped and asked questions by police. fortunately, they continued to go. but that was his first memory of f

joining me now, attorney who represents daunte wright and george floyd. how is the wright family doing? i know must be unimaginable grief but can you give us an update? >> they're shellshocked, right? go from living ordinary day-to-day life to having one of the if not the worst thing that could possibly happen to parents to all of a sudden the entire world really descending upon them. so i think that they're trying to get their feet under them. you know, not even close are they really to place to being able to process all the feelings of grief and anger at this point. >> yeah, i can -- in my experience covering these situations, really is a brutal thing to juggle emotionally, grief, intense loss and the attention of cameras and reporters and all that. what is your view, the family's view of the developments insofar as the officer being charged? >> obviously we all believe the officer should have been charged, and the officer being charged is a good initial step towards justice. but that's a long road ahead, and while we talk about wanting to achieve whole

daunte wright is not. an autopsy report was released today saying his it was a homicide and cause of death was the single gunshot wound to the chest. this cost clashes tonight with the police in minnesota and we're seeing that tonight, a night that has become all too familiar with minnesota since the police killing of george floyd there last year. one of the jurors in the trial of -- which completed its 11th day today is living under that curfew tonight, and that minneapolis suburb of brooklyn center where daunte was shot and killed by a police officer yesterday. the curfew went into effect at 7 pm that night. the chief of the brooklyn center police force said today that when he showed, he said this today when he showed police body cam video of the shooting that the killing of daunte wright was an accident. the chief identified the officer who fired the shot as a woman who is a senior officer in the department. she has now been identified as kim potter. she is a 26 year veteran of the police department. th
