he got so much information out of harry truman's cabinet that truman made the fbi sweep the room to make sure there wasn't a microphone. tom clark, who is the attorney general and supervision over the fbi, was one of the biggest leakers that pearson had at the time. sometimes the leakers were small fry. quite often they were military officers. there is a lot of interservice rivalry so if you want to know about the army, asked the navy and vice versa. in some cases it was military officers who felt that something was going on that the public needed to know about. it was an army colonel who leaked to pearson the material about general macarthur in korea that macarthur had ignored the intelligence reports that the chinese were building up along the river and had moved forward. the source within the pentagon. when government agents would come to quiz pearson about his sources he would look at them and smile and say, my sources are at the top level of your agency. during truman's vice presidency. in fact, he wasn't told about the truman project when one of his advisors took him aside and said, mr. president, i think there is something you need to know about. well, the changes in american government in politics that were associated with the new deal and with world war ii ended up having an effect on the vice presidency. they strengthened the presidency, they weakened the political parties and they had an effect of pulling the vice presidency into the executive branch. as expectations of the presidency increased in the nuclear age and in the cold war, as the president was expected to conduct a more robust foreign policy, and as technology made foreign travel more possible, vice presidents began to be sent on diplomatic missions, they began to take on other tasks in the executive branch. beginning in 1940, the president got the power, really, to designate who his running mate would be at the convention. so the office really began to move into the executive branch beginning with t

report after world war ii named after former president harry truman, but as i mentioned, the college really started to explode in terms of numbers sometime after that. host: most community colleges do not have on-campus residents, but why have community colleges, it seems, keep costs in check versus four-year universities and colleges? guest: first thing, community colleges actually have quite a few residential halls. there are very few overall and the terms of number they serve, but almost 200 of our institutions have a residential facility of some kind. the reason why is because students come from all over to attend them. we had a substantial number of international students. some of our colleges, particularly rural colleges, serve tremendous geographical areas. as a result, there is a need for students who would like to study full-time to have a place to live. increasingly, our colleges and building dormitories, as i mentioned, is not a lot in terms of the numbers to take advantage of that, but in terms of how community colleges are able to keep tuition slow, we do ask more of our
