let's turn things over to jeff ranieri. talk about this heat. boy, it was hot outside, jeff. when are we finally going to see those temperatures start to like head down? >> you know, we're starting to see it, slowly. i know it doesn't feel like it outside, right now. but a slow dropdown right now. and then, certainly, as we move through this weekend. so let's go ahead and bring you to that micro climate forecast and take a look at our 24-hour temperature change. so this is comparing the temperature right now, to exactly this very second yesterday. and you can see, how numbers are five to ten degrees cooler from santa rosa to napa. also, dropping five degrees cooler in concord and down five there in san jose. a little bit of some patchy fog trying to form near the coastline, as well. and this will continue as we move through this upcoming weekend. again, those trends going down but i know. it is hot out there. so if you are headed out with these restrictions loosening up and maybe you are going to head to your favorite restaurant, night out on the town. san francisco is probab

. >>> i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. more hot weather on the way but i'll show you what's different about this heat compared to what we all went through last week. i'm back with the update in about six minutes. >>> at least five people are hurt after a pedestrian bridge collapsed on to a highway in washington, d.c. it happened on route 295 just before noon. the mangled concrete and metal debris sprawled across six lanes causing backup for hours. investigators say it appears a truck crashed into the bridge causing a chain reaction with the cars behind it. paramedics rushed them to the hospital. fortunately, everyone is going to be okay. >> here is something we don't see often. i'm not sure if we've ever seen it. 40 cows rumbling through the streets near los angeles after escaping from a meat packing facility. what started out as something light hearted and funny quickly turned tragic. here is gordan tokumatsu in our nbc sister station in l.a. >> reporter: at first julian castro and his wife sandy find it somewhat amusing.

let's get right to meteorologist jeff ranieri. >> across the desert southwest, the pattern is pushing the heat through southern california. we got up to 100 in concord, pleasanton 99, 99 in napa. if you haven't seen this, north bay, east bay, south bay, all under heat warnings until 9:00 p.m. friday. the hottest day in my forecast is tomorrow. look at these temperature ranges, 94 to 108 degrees. let's get you a closer look at the hottest location that we are zoned in on as we move through tomorrow's forecast. that's for inland east bay. we'll start it off 8:00 a.m., 73 degrees. by noon we're catapulting up to 96. for the afternoon, outrageous for the bay area standard, 106 at 3:00 p.m., 107 by 4:00 p.m. thankfully we don't have any big wind events as this heat wave is moving through. but a fire danger, yep, it's still going to increase. today we're at 110 on the fire index. that is considered very high. and then as we roll through tomorrow, it goes up to 150. so, increasing fire danger, a threat to the bay area as well. i'll be back with more updates in 20 minutes. >> all right, see y

let's get right to chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. and, jeff, you say there are some pockets of the bay area where the temps are finally starting to come down. >> yeah, north bay. coastline. even some of the east bay. i know it doesn't feel like it right now but these heat warnings are expected to expire at 9:00 p.m. tonight in anticipation of some cooler weather as we roll through the weekend. let's take a look at the hottest. in case you missed this, concord, 107. livermore, 106. so, a little cooler there today. but places like danville and morgan hill. those numbers were down just a few degrees. so let's bring you to tonight. if you are headed out, it's still going to be uncomfortable, especially across the inland east bay. we are talking contra costa and alameda counties. so we are in the low 100s as we continue through this hour. by 8:00 a.m., we should start to drop down into the 80s. 10:00 p.m., 70s. and then, by midnight, into early-tomorrow morning, we will have some much-cooler 60s. now, this area of high pressure that's bee

let's bring in jeff ranieri, again, we want to talk about that fire danger. and, jeff, we are going to see this fire danger, the rest of the year. and really, it's starting to be year round, almost. >> yeah, certainly, you know, we have two bad rain seasons in a row. and it's just hard to catch up. so, right now, it's all about being on the defense. getting your house ready on those hot days, watching out for yourself and your neighbors. seeing anything suspicious and making sure to report that, as well. so, i wanted to focus this on when that fire danger is going to pick up next and you can see. next week, we have this strong area of high pressure that is building over the desert southwest. now, the circulation around this is going to drive up this heat. and that's really going to pump up those temperatures. but let's show you exactly when. this weekend, not that bad. we are looking at mid-80s. but once we hit next wednesday in concord, for example, we are up to 99. 100 next thursday. that would be the highest-fire danger and it looks like a three-day event.

. >>> i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, tracking big-time heat to put us back near records. update in about six minutes. >>> new at 11:00, rainbow flags flying in celebration of pride month, number of cities paying tribute to diversity. one east bay mom proudly displaying a flag with special meaning had to stolen not once but twice. she took action to let vandals know if they're on the fence about the issue of gay pride, she is too. >> reporter: at night you can clearly see rainbow flags prominently placed in front of christine's home in walnut creek in honor of her daughter. >> my daughter committed suicide at beginning of last year. in belongings, i found a pride flag. i flew it outside my house starting last year in honor of her, and i felt that it was just in support of who she was. she identified as bisexual. >> reporter: the flag a staple outside her home for months but last month it was stolen. she posted on social media, got outpouring of support. >> next couple of days i had neighbors drop three flags on my front porch. >> reporter: immediately put all of them up, o

jeff ranieri joins us now. and jeff, we've been talking about no rain for so long and suddenly at 6:00 you stunned us with some rain. >> yeah. we've been tracking this since earlier this week, and that storm system finally got here. we knew it was on the way. everything is on track with this thing. no rainfall for the bay area. look at our northern coastline. picked up a half to 1 1/2 inches of rain. it's breaking up a little bit right now but check this out. this weekend we are still expecting additional rainfall to continue with that storm. it's just lingering out there near the coast. so eureka, crescent city in for about a half inch and then portland, seattle will be in that half to around one inch. some of the northern coastline of oregon even getting close to two inches. so wild and wacky weather there. we'll keep our eye on it. moves closer to us. we will let you know. but again, looks dry for this weekend. i think the bigger changes this weekend that we're going to be in for at least tomorrow is some wi

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. jeff, two things to talk about today. i was in the city and it was really windy in san francisco which is not a good predictor now, especially because we're getting these really hot temperatures. >> yeah, and the wind today, that was more of a cooler ocean wind coming out of the west 10 to about 25 miles per hour. so thankfully it wasn't coming out of the east, which is the driest direction on that wind. we wanted to get you set up on that heat and what's coming our way. here's a look at all of the heat warnings, watches and advisory that covers the north bay, east bay and south bay. the one spot not included is the peninsula. we're looking at hot weather wednesday, thursday and friday, temperatures ranging 95 to 108 degrees. low humidity down to 10% to 20% and obviously elevating our fire danger. i'll show you how things will pan out for us. tomorrow 85 degrees, not so bad. once we hit thursday up to a hot 105. concord 105 on thursday. you can see san jose won't quite hit triple digits widespread but we'll go to 97 as we

jeff ranieri is tracking our latest drought maps. >> we are seeing this drought continue to return across the bay area. i wanted to tag on to the south bay story. no matter what, when we are seeing dry weather moving in, the south bay will have the worst time with water. it gets the least amount of water compared to everywhere else across the bay area when it comes to our rain season. so if we have a bad rain season, they will be bottom on the list. okay. let's take you into the current map. you can see this dark red color. that's exceptional drought, which will likely cover all of the bay area. it is the worst level of drought as we continue through summer. and the water sports, it is extremely low which we just heard in the south bay. we are in the 20s for lexington and coyote. puts us at a 25.7% average down in the south bay. east bay doing the best with east bay mud and averaging 38.1%. big-time changes on the way. cooler weather lately. this area of high pressure will bring dangerous heat. >>> a black bear that's been making the rounds in the east bay spotted again. check out new sec
