meteorologist kari hall joining us now, and kari, this was felt by people all across the bay area from san francisco to san jose. can you talk to us more about the fault line and where this is all centered? >> yeah. as you mentioned it is on the hayward fault and it was felt across the bay area. you can see all of these areas where we ha lighter blue shading that shows where people actually felt it and all of the reports that came in and on that hayward fault we watch it very closely because it runs through some of the most densely populated parts of the bay area in the east bay and once again of it right at dinner time as people were sitting down at the table. we watch every single quake here, even though it was a 3.9 and widely felt, the last major earthquake we had was in 1868 here with a 6.8, and so that was considered the great earthquake you up until the one in 1906 along the san an drae asphalt. we will hopefully not see any more activity after that one but it did rattle some nerves. we'll talk more about the weather coming up later zoo it's always a good reminder to be prepared

meteorologist kari hall watching the lack of rain that we're getting here in the bay area. kari? >> so dry during the winter months. the rain was too few and far between, and now we're getting some high winds here and there, and we've seen some gusty winds even kicking up this morning. as we take a live look outside in san jose, a few clouds dotting the sky and at least we do have a cool ocean breeze that's been picking up. still looking at some of those winds coming in from the west at about 20 to 25 miles per hour. it will still be gusty today, but we shouldn't see any winds as high as we did yesterday. we had gusts at 57 through the altamont pass and a lot of 55 readings. today it looks more like 25 to 30. still quite gusty as we still will have the concern of the fire danger because of the dry vegetation that we're seeing and the lack of water in those reservoirs. as we look at our temperatures for today, it has been cool because of that cool air that's been coming in off of the coastal areas, so we're going to continue to see this for a couple more days, and then we'll warm

good afternoon, kari. >> good afternoon, and those temperatures are starting to heat up. before we even reach noon here's a live look outside in san jose. here's a look at what we're experiencing right now that the heat advisory is just beginning to continue through 9:00 this evening for parts of the south bay, peninsula and parts of the north bay shaded in orange and included in that heat advisory, a step above that, will be the excessive heat warning that shows that we will see some hotter temperatures in some of those spots today. here's where we already are, wow. 96 degrees in livermore and 95 in brentwood. we haven't even made it to lunchtime yet. we're at 85 degrees in santa rosa and 79 in oakland and in san jose it's 86 degrees. so these temperatures are heating up fast. that's because they are headed right back to the possibility of setting new records, especially in vacaville, fairfield, concord and livermore. we'll be very close again today as we deal with this third day of extreme heat. we'll be watching a cooldown in the being if. i'll have more on that coming
