joining me now is nicole hannah jones, creator of the 1619 project. at first it seemed like it was a fringe sort of attack on your project, on this project. it has now become a cause. just a sampling. in nevada, they want teachers there to wear body cameras so they can monitor what they're teaching to make sure they're not teaching things like the 1619 project. ron desantis in florida has accused -- he's making hay out of this for himself, want to make sure that we're not teaching kids to hate their country. in arizona they're talking about fining teachers $5,000 if they discuss hot button topics such as racial equity. this seems like madness, nicole. some of them are calling it -- they want patriotic education instead. in your view, what is this about? >> they for take time to discuss this, joy. we're in a dangerous period right now. people scoffed at them, when you read language of them they appear very silly. when you think about what this is actually trying to do, we know it's a narrative that allows us to enact dangerous policies, it is narrative

nicole hannah jones, a correspondent for the new york times magazine where she created the 1619 project, which was an examination of racism and slavery in this country and its centrality to the spine of american history. for that, she was awarded the 2020 pulitzer prize for commentary and she joins me now. nicole, part of what is so nuts about this entire debate or discourse is just the the malleability of the terms. like when you look at the actual legislative text, this is like intensely regulating basically a set of like substantive conceptions about america's goodness and innocence inherently more than anything else. >> yes, so one, we should just think about that these laws are prescribing a patriotic education. well what does that mean? if you read my opening essay in the 1619 project, it's actually probably the most patriotic thing i've ever written because it says that even though black americans weren't intended to be the recipients of these majestic ideas, they actually believed in them and fought to make them true for all americans which is the highest calling of patriotism.

hannah jones. that is, yes, i'm a professor and i am deeply concerned about the, the integrity of the tenure process. but i am also an educator, and i think we have to appreciate what it took to persuade someone like nicole haven't jones, who is at the peak of her career to bring her back all the way to north carolina from new york to enter the classroom. and young people and missing that opportunity . now. right. and all now quaint the that's what the position is for. so the idea that kind of coal, or excuse me, nicole jones comes from a nontraditional academic background for tenure. it's disingenuous because the point of this sort of position is having people who reached this type of excellence in their professional career and to bring that to the professional school so that students have the opportunity to work with someone of this caliber and that's not uncommon. you see that in business schools in journalism programs and law schools where different sorts of credentials are used. when people ar

the other reason was that i think it's tragic, really, that names like nicole hannah jones, and ebrham kendy and cornell west are better known than thomas sowell. he's a first rate thinker and his scholarship runs circles around theres, maybe around all of there's put together and yet they are better known and it's not just how broad his research has been, his scholarship has been but the rigor and depth of his thinking is something that i think is not matched by those individuals and i wanted more people to know whose thomas sowell is and if you already know who he is i was hoping you'd be more interested in what he said over the decades because many of the things he's talked about in research we're still talking about today from social justice to affirmative action to school choice to slavery, he's covered all that larry. larry: discrimination fails, m arxism fails he's a very strong opponent of affirmative action down through the years and he was really a just call him a free market devotee. people need to know and remember him, and you know, we worked a lot with senator tim cotton

this is why they came at nicole hannah jones. these folks want to tell a whitewashed version of history in which they stole native land. it was fine for them to do so because god wanted them to have this land. they were entitled to work this land. they want us all to be happy and to say we moved on but it's so interesting that they think it's black people who are stuck in the past when clearly they are the folks who are reliving their 19th century glory and they lost a war and yet they keep on trying to refight and relit at this gate a war that they lost resoundingly. then they lost again in the 1960s on the heels of the civil rights movement. so history does not ultimately go to these losers but that doesn't mean that we don't have to be vigilant in continuing to say, here's what the truth is. we will fight you every step of the way. and juneteenth reminds us that our people didn't just get freedom because white people gave it to us but that we fought and that we continue to control our history, our narrative, our story. that is
