lester, hang in tight there as we turn to our chief white house correspondent peter alexander. let's talk turkey. what can actually be accomplished here? you have issues of russian aggression in the region with ukraine, the annexation of crimea. you have the issue of what happened in syria. you have the cyber attacks with the u.s. believing russia is harboring the cyber criminals and, of course, election meddling. how do you think this will will all play out as this agenda unfolds today? >> you noted this, white house officials acknowledge that expectations are low today. senior officials telling us they didn't expect any concrete policy announcementes to come out of the day. they said if there were any agreements or any potential for agreement, it is likely the presidents would task the aides, advisors to try to pursue it going forward. but just as we get started on this day, you see again they expect to be roughly four to five hours in there. the two leaders will not be sharing any meals together. it starts with just that two on two as it were. the secretary of state with the

president gets the last word. >> peter alexander thank you. >>> former u.s. ambassador to russia michael mcfaul was in the prep session with president biden and he has also met with putin. i spoke to him earlier about what putin is looking to accomplish here and what president biden should be prepared for. president biden asked for this meeting how does that affect the dynamic of what will happen? >> i think that creates expectations for the summit on the biden side vladimir putin didn't ask for it all he has to do is show up, stand next to the president of the united states, and that's a win for him that shows that the world is reaching out to him. >> my colleague keir simmons did a lengthy interview with president putin. what do you think president biden can learn from that interview? >> two things. one, president putin is not constrained by the truth. and two, whataboutism. comparing things that have nothing to do with each other. president biden needs to be prepared for both of those. >> president biden wants to find common ground on something. does putin

i want to bring in peter alexander as we watch the images unfold. talk to us, peter, about the prep that went into this meeting because i took note of something that you reported yesterday that president biden had met with many russia advisors, some of whom had served in in the trump administration. in order, i presume, to get a wide range of perspectives on how to approach this moment. >> yes, you're right. i'm told by a person familiar with that matter that days before president biden left the united states for europe. he gathered with about 10 outside russia experts in the roosevelt room at the white house. it was a two hour session. as you say, there was a range of views discusseded about how to deal with vladimir putin by those who had been in if the room with putin in at the past. among them, previous guest ambassador mcfall who served under president obama. fiona hill served under the trump administration and obama's administration before that. and george w. bush as well. this conversation was focused basically on strategies going into this m

there ain't going to be -- >> joining me is leigh ann caldwell and nbc news co-anchor peter alexander. first, nancy pelosi making it clear these are things happening simultaneously. i have never, in my experience, going back to the hill, seen anything work this way with this caucus breaking off. you have the house, the senate, republicans, democrats divided caucuses. how is this going to work? >> it's an excellent question, andrea, and we keep asking every senator we see how is this going to work in practicality? how will you commit to passing a $2 or $3 trillion partisan infrastructure bill on human infrastructure alongside a bipartisan traditional infrastructure bill and be sure that one does not leave the other behind and that's because progressives are demanding that. they do not want to agree to this bipartisan bill unless they have an agreement that partisan one can get through. so some senators are saying perhaps there needs to be a blood oath to get commitment from all 50 senators that they'll agree to both things and senator elizabeth warren and going back to her campaign day

peter alexander. let's talk about how the white house is planning to sell this. >> andrea, as you noted, the president landing in lacross, wisconsin. one's a rural area and one is particularly hard hit by one of those infrastructural challenges that the country faces right now and separately it faces a senate seat for which they'll be in 2022. so the president's focus today according to white house officials is going to be not so much about the process of doing this, but really about the policy and the people, the real-life impact of these infrastructure efforts, this bipartisan deal as you noted with $1.2 trillion that it would be directing around the country right now. particularly in wisconsin an official was detailing some of the figures for me and roughly half of the 160,000 pipes in that state are believed to be contaminated by lead. beyond that, they say there is roughly a thousand bridges in the state that are structurally deficient and all in an effort to have an impact by real workers in tho

peter alexander joins us outside the white house. let me start with you. if this feels as if the democratic leadership in congress has never wanted to admit to progressive activists that the bill was not really designed to pass and then it sort of got a lot of support among progressives, and they've never wanted to say oh, well, wait a minute, and now they're in this box where they have a bill that doesn't have votes, they're set up to disappoint progressives, and haven't created a wedge inside the republican party. >> reporter: they are in a box, democratic leaders, chuck. they feel they need to do something, but there's no path to voting rights legislation, major voting rights that can get to 60 votes. it is not as if they change the bill can win ten republican votes. it is not going to happen. it can win one or two. if they shrink it down, do the john lewis voting rights act. the only path the bill had which party leaders held out hope for was that they get all 50 democrats on board. it runs into a filibuster, then there's pressure to persuade holdouts
