the president and ceo in springfield missouri put out this call that was yesterday at 10:30 am. the call to arms, by this morning, at 8:21 am, that hospital ceo said that 14 respiratory therapist have contacted his hospital offering to help, thank you so much. but today at lunchtime, 12:30 pm, more heartening news. the same ceo saying we've had now quote as the ceo of cocks health in missouri. when he's talking about is for real and bad. the kansas missouri star speaking now saying that, a month ago, that hospital, cox health, it had 35 patients, now they have 95. when from 35 to 95 patients in one month. the hospital says they are admitting on average, 18 patients every day now. they think they are going up to 27 new admissions a day within the next two weeks. they are trying to scale up their staffing and physical capacity to handle the number of hospitalizations they are coping with, because of the covid surge in southwest missouri, on top of their public offer respiratory services calling for everyone, help they of their staffing in the hospital. the usual number is about 40

the vast majority of people who are coming -- fallen sick with covid in springfield are unvaccinated, and unlike last year a lot of them are younger. they're in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and people who these doctors and nurses are seeing in their 30s this year in their icus seem to be much sicker than that same age group last year. >> we should note that it is a little unclear right now in terms of our understanding the evidence of delta, we know quite certainly it is more transmissible. it is unclear whether it gets people sicker, but what you are reporting indicates just from the sort of anecdotal experience of the people working in this hospital is they feel like that's what they're seeing, is that a correct characterization? >> yes, there's definitely controversy around whether delta is deadlier. all i have heard consistently from doctors and nurses is that people seem to be not only younger but also sicker this year, and there might be various reasons for that. but the ultimate result is that health care workers are struggling. they're really exhausted. they're overwhelmed again, and

he's the chief administrative officer at mercy hospital in springfield. eric, thank you so much for spending time with us this morning. i'm curious as to how you would describe the state of covid in missouri. how close are you to crisis mode, as the governor described it? >> thank you, boris. appreciate the time this morning. you know, we started off today with 133 covid positive patients in our hospital. 149 when you look at our rural hospitals that surround the area. i would say, locally, in our facility, in our health care system in southwest missouri, we are absolutely stretched, further than we were last year. it is a manage crisis at this point for sure. we're seeing things that we didn't see last year at a pace that is almost unbelievable. you look at how quickly this ak s sell rated. >> your hospital, specifically, had to ask for help last weekend because of high demand. you had to ask nearby stit citys a -- cities and states for ventilators. governor parson called it a management problem, saying the state does not have a ventilator shortage. help
