ian bremmer, i appreciate your time. let's bring in the panel, "washington post" columnist marc thiessen. jason riley, wall street columnist and senior fellow at the manhattan institute. you've covered the white house for a long time, this was the worst day of the presidency so far. your thoughts on how the president dealt with it and where the administrations trying to get us? >> well, i think that the president came out and he was very somber, he said he took full responsibility for everything that happens happens. i don't like he had a choice in that. he stuck in the decision to pull out. but there is an incredible question about why he was so 18. he keeps on saying that it was inevitable and there has to be a kind of chaotic exit but i don't think he is saying that was inevitable that we would have lost one dozen u.s. soldiers. up until now, the white house has to hope that they can evacuate afghanistan without any loss of american life. today it happened. it a whole lot of other assumptions where exposed today like

janis mackey frayer on the ground in beijing and ian bremmer. what is china doing to build up a relationship with the taliban? what would that look like? >> reporter: china had been laying the groundwork already, just over two weeks ago, the foreign minister hosted talks with the taliban delegation, led by mullah baradar. china has investments in infrastructure, mining as well as oil. the taliban sees the economic benefit of cooperating with china, especially with the belton road initiative through central asia. for china what is driving the warming ties is security. it fears ex-supremeism in the western part of the country in xingiang, how they justified thousands of uighurs. they said they would not allow fighters to use afghan territory as a base for attacks inside china. the problem for china of course is having a radical militant group take over a country is seen as inherently threatening. there are also concerns about an inspiration effect that atal been resurgence could have regionally. chai is not recognizing the taliban as the legitimat

we are talking to your counterpart, ian bremmer for the geopolitical angles of all of the news.talk to us about the market perspective. what is china's goal when you think about the regulatory crackdowns and really ruling with an iron fist, what you think the end goal is for beijing? michael: being the end goal for xi jinping is to make sure that all parts of china's corporate sector, especially the private sector, are aligned behind his agenda. and for the thinking about the large e-commerce companies, they are really caught in the cross was between those two key priorities. what is the shift from consumer focused technology to so-called hard tech, like semi conductors that beijing believes are critical to u.s.-china competition or where they need to reduce the reliance on the u.s. the other aspect is seeking things growing focus on -- xi jingping's focus on addiction and worried about demographic issues. the large e-commerce platforms especially are really hit by both of these factors that have taken a leg up over the last three to four months romaine: i'm curious about the long-term
