jane morgan. piedmont covid task force. the approved third dose that is for certain patients who are likely to have immune response to a full course of pfizer or moderna vaccine but new data shows more than a million people received unauthorized before the fda decision. what do people need to understand about this new decision? >> thanks for having me today, fred. one of the things we have to think about is this is really the next dose for these patients, not necessarily a booster dose. this is the next dose but certain people not able to amount with the vaccine. even though they received the single dose of johnson & johnson or two doses of moderna and pfizer, they didn't really reach that high level of efficacy. and so it's been determined that they need an additional dose so that they can reach the same level of protection as the rest of us. there are about 1 million people who have gone out, as we know, from the cdc now and gotten an additional dose. what we would say to that is certainly there's no data to support that.

jane morgan is the executive director of the piedmont health karako individual task force, she joins me now from atlanta. doctor, great to have you on the show, thank you so much for joining us. certainly really worrying numbers when it comes to children. >> yeah, absolutely. thank you for having me on, robyn. certainly as we move through with this delta variant, this fourth surge, we see that the impact is greatest on younger and younger and younger demographics. and this is not only because of the virulence of the delta variant, but it's also because of our successful campaign to get those over 65 years of age vaccinated. and so now the virus is finding its opportunities on our children. >> and why are we seeing particularly children, young children, not just youth, but young kids being very, very sick in the hospitals? we had one report of hospitals warning that if your child was in a car accident, for example, or had a health issue that they would have to wait for another child to die before an icu bed would become available. that's just one example of one hospital, but why are w

jane morgan, executive director of the piedmont covid task force. dr. morgan, grateful for your time. you just heard kaitlan collins ask an interesting question out of the briefing today. are we still seeing in hospitals mostly overwhelmingly 90%-plus unvaccinated, or are you beginning to see more people with the breakthrough infections who have been vaccinated who are now back in the hospital? >> hi, john, and thanks for having me today. we definitely see more breakthrough cases with this delta variant and it's one of the reasons that we want to take this variant very seriously. and not just in hospitalized cases where the majority of our patients are still unvaccinated, but we do see these breakthrough cases even if patients are not being hospitalized. and we need to understand the severity and the seriousness of this very stealthy variant called the delta variant which is actually a new version of covid-19. you can think of it a little bit as covid-21, a new updated version. stealthier deadlier, more evasive, more infectious. this is the new and impr
