you are looking at martin luther king iii, the son of dr. martin luther king jr. let's listen to what he is saying. >> when the civil rights act of 1964 was signed and my father visited the white house and he told president johnson, this is not enough, we need a voting rights bill. because at the time states could pass all kinds of laws designed to keep people from voting, but president johnson told my father, "i can't do it, i used up all of my political power to get the civil rights act passed." so that day when my father walked out of the white house, people said, "well, what are you going to do, dr. king, now?" and he said, "we gonna go back to the south to get him some power." now, i won't pretend that it was simple. people were beaten. some were killed. police turned dogs and fire hoses on peaceful marchers who just wanted to vote, but every day the voices got louder, the demonstrations got bigger, the reporters showed up in greater numbers, and the moral outrage grew. that's how the voting rights act happened, through the power of the people. >> and that is

and the other one you well recognize, martin luther king jr. king wanted joseph jackson, a chicagoan then, to use -- to be more aggressive about civil rights, and joseph h. jackson did not want to do that at all. he thought that the church shouldn't be in politics. i'm going to see if i can switch here for a minute, if it will work for me. it's slow. so in kansas city, in about 1961, the national baptist met in kansas city, and it was a controversial action going on. so this is from the -- you should look at the king global site. as a controversial leader of the national baptist convention, he wasn't controversial, he was elected over and over again, even if he had to do it kind of semi-fraudulently. he's like a political leader, right? jackson often clashed with other baptist ministers, including martin luther king jr., who believed jackson's opposition to the use of civil diso we'd yens to achieve civil rights was too conservative. you've got to persuade your people at the convention who should be in. so jackson was not an uneducated man. ver

martin luther king today. we hear a lot about his "i have a dream" speech. a lot of you know that -- republicans to quote it. he also talked famously about his grave disappointment with the white moderate. what do you make of the work and support being offered by quote/unquote white moderates when it comes to the struggle for voting rights, especially for people of color? >> well, i think more has to be done. unfortunately we're at sort of odd place in history where so many people are quick to call themselves allies in the struggle. but even though they call themselves allies in the strug tele, they're not actually making any concerted efforts, not making any steps to ensure that black voting rights in particular are protected. and so i would say anyone who wants to quote king and who wants to claim that they're committed to the vision that he established, to the dream that he articulated in 1963, should be rallying behind efforts to protect the voting rights act and the provision that was struck down by shelby needs to be restored. so you can say you're com
