kathy hochul has spent nearly her whole life in new york state. she was a practicing lawyer before working as a legislative aide on the hill. ultimately won a county clerk seat. later she won that ill-fated seat in congress. since she became lieutenant governor during cuomo's second term she's famously driven to every county in the state every year she's been in office. she's from a traditionally more conservative part of up state new york. in the past she described herself as an independent democrat. she was once opposed progressive priorities like issuing driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. at one point she got an endorsement from the nra. but she has moved to the left or at least to the center since then. she's renounced her old stance on the driver's licenses. she's adopted a more traditionally progressive slate of policies. she's considered to be essentially pragmatic and to have followed the same sort of path that a lot of upstate new york relatively conservative democrats have followed when they've move into statewide or indeed na

he used to be the attorney general in the great state of new york. he used to be the attorney general in the great state of new york. he was one of the attorneys who made the gig into a very national profile job. new york attorney generals in particular tend to do that. it's -- being new york attorney general is a job that brings with it a lot of power, a lot of opportunity for news making. typically it brings with it a lot of swagger. eliot spitzer was new york attorney general before he became governor. so was andrew cuomo, for example. but eric schneiderman took over on the fast track in 2018 and presumably greater things beyons all possible doubt.yo in may 2018 "the new yorker" published a granular detailed 01 just heinous accounting of how eric schneiderman had subjected four different women to what the magazine described as nonconsensual physical violence. all four women alleged schneiderman repeatedly hit thea often in a sexual or at least sexual degradation context but a never with their consent. schneiderman denied he ever assaulted anyone.

joining me now new york state senator alessandra biaggi and new york state assembly member john t. mcdonald iii. thank you both for joining. it's a very important topic and i'm so happy that you're both here to discuss. so state senator biaggi, i'm going to start with you. you used to work for governor cuomo and you've been open about feeling uncomfortable around him even after you left the job. what is your reaction to this report? >> i mean, first i want to say that i commend the brave women who came forward. it took an incredible amount of courage to report their interactions with the governor and their instances of sexual harassment. and i think that what the a.g.'s report confirmed for many of us was really what most of us knew to be true, that the governor has fostered and upheld a toxic work environment that is harmful to women. his staff has perpetuated this toxic environment. and now what's concluded as we all know is there were violations of both federal and state law. so his actions ultimately have become an abuse of power and

what will new york state be in the future? no one can tell us, because it depends on what we do now. our actions will determine our future. we must keep people in businesses thriving in this state, crime must be controlled, and we have to be smart about it. no governor in the nation has passed more progressive measures than i have, but i disagree with some people in my own party who called to defund the police. i believe it is misguided, i believe it is dangerous. gun violence and crime are savaging inner cities. look at new york city, the majority of victims are poor, black and brown. reforming police must be the goal, ending discrimination by the police, ending the unnecessary use of force, and then building back trust and respect between the police and the community they serve, that's the real answer. and that is easier said than done, but it's also the truth and the right way forward. our state's economic competitiveness is vital. demonizing business is against our collective self-interest. taking actions that cause busine

york state politics, andrew cuomo is the most powerful man in new york state politics, but he doesn't have a lot of friends, even among democrats. it's true. he's had a lifelong dream of winning four terms as governor. his father was denied a fourth term. i covered his father years ago. marrow cuomo different than andrew, but andrew cuomo for the legacy wants a fourth term. this report would seem to say no, sir. >> it isn't hard not to sexually harass people. it's actually really easy not to sexually harass women who are your subordinates. men who are your subordinates. it's not hard. if he wanted a fourth term, what happens he should have taken that into account. >> right. and i think that's going to be really important later today after the governor's press conference is what president biden and the white house say. we talked about this earlier in the show, but earlier this year when president biden was asked about the allegations, he said if they are confirmed, yes, he should go. does this rise to that level? i'm sure there will be a lot of questions about that. >> we know the pres

new york state schools, most new york state schools were open for most of the year. and what happened is that i was on cuomo's reopening committee and we had the kind of protocols that kept a lot of people safe for a lot of the time. there's a tremendous amount of disinformation and distrust, particularly in upstate new york. and what the union is trying to do, and that's part of why we put $5 million out there as part of this get out, get back to school campaign, is to try to overcome this doubt, this disinformation. think about it, just last week i was on "meet the press" with chuck todd and i had a 20 minute interview and it was clear that we were about getting back to school and trying to make sure that everyone felt safe and comfortable. and fox took one word i used and said i was hedging. this is about trying to create the climate where everybody feels that they are safe and welcome back to school. >> okay, but how about spending that 5 million bucks on the kids who are behind in a year's worth of learning rather than spending it on encouraging teachers? just m
