oren, let's turn to nick paton walsh. the taliban, nick, is now saying that foreign nationals are allowed to leave the airport but they're not allowing afghans to leave. as i said at the top, they're telling them to go home and there will be no reprisals. i mean what does this mean for those thousands of afghans who are outside the gates of the airport trying to push their way in? >> reporter: well, that's important to point out who got on to the airport or not has kind of been defined a lot of the time bichir chaos and strength of will frankly or often who you knew inside of it. we had reports of taliban check points turning people away, we have seen it ourselves, the taliban always on the main road towards the airport and they tightened security, too, sending in better trained units around it, too. this is the first time they've actually laid out what, quote, their policy is, which is afghans should not be going out of the country unless it is necessary. that will certainly strike a chill in the tens of thousands of siv

nick, let's start with what's happened at the airport. what is the status of those desperate crowds we saw there? >> reporter: i think it's fair to say they've probably diminished to some degree. they were telling people to move back, difficult task, though, essentially, because at any given gate, any given opportunity, people were simply trying to rush in wherever they could. i saw one man trying to climb over one of the walls into the airport too. absolute chaos and the streets full of people who had chosen to try to walk, to get near the airport. but startling to see the u.s.'s enemy for 20 years simply doing the crowd control to stop people from getting into that particular airport. some might say because they considered these people disloyal to what's happening here in kabul and maybe had worked for the previous government, but remarkable still that they were sort of providing that perimeter security, almost, for the american evacuations. still, though, not a comforting standoff in the slightest. the u.s. opening fire, killing, they

nick, let's start with you. we are seeing these really heartbreaking videos of afghans, now refugees taking shelter in kabul. is there any chance afghanistan's government could regain control? >> not at this stage. and at this point they seem to be constantly trying to work out which is the next fire to put out. we were at three provincial capitals on sunday. now we are talking about eight with the possibility of a ninth being reported at the moment. it just keeps happening. president joe biden pressed on this because, it is, frankly, happening. he said he did not regret the decision to withdraw u.s. troops, reminded americans they spend over a trillion dollars in 20 years to train 300,000 afghans. he said it's down to the afghans and their leadership to come together to fight. sadly, a lot of that is based on the same misconceptions america's had for a long time. the trillion dollars wasn't just spent on the military. some of it wasted on projects, some of it must be in taliban hands right now. people's attenti

nick carter, the head of the armed forces, said that there were numbers in the hall, you hundreds of people still in afghanistan who are eligible to come to the u. k. on friday, the government said that there were between 811 hundreds eligible afghans and up to 150 britons who hadn't been evacuated many sources in the u. k. you say that based on the number of coals desperate appeals, they're getting from relative said. they think the number could be significantly higher. well, whatever the case, nick carter says they will continue to do whatever they can in these last few hours . and he says it's gone as well as it could in the circumstances. well, the circumstances as we've been hearing are tragic and chaotic. so it's far from ideal and it's really unclear exactly how many people are stuck and what they do next. the defense secretary, ben wallace, pretty battelle, the home secretary and the foreign secretary dominic rob, have written to politicians here from thing the u. k. will use every lever to continue to try to help people leave the country off to next tuesday. and they think i

but this is reality. >> so back with nick paton walsh. nick, our washington team did just get confirmation from a u.s. official 10,400 people flown out of the airport in kabul over the last 24 hours. 10,400. that's a very big number. they'll have to keep it that high for several days because of the other breaking news. it is a very big number. to evacuate that many people in one day. the new problem, though, nick, is the taliban just put out a statement a few minutes ago saying they don't -- they're not in favor at all of extending the august 31st deadline. they see august 31st as the date when u.s. troops need to leave. how does that complicate things? >> reporter: yeah. i mean, look, i would be very surprised at this stage if the u.s., given how precarious that situation is decided to roll the dice and stay past the 31st of august. joe biden, president joe biden always wanted to be out. the problem, too, is the united states will now be the victims of their own success because that 10,000 figure is extraordinary. i mean, it is also poss

nick: thank you for having me. we're really proud of the results we were able to pull over the last 12 months on a constant currency basis. from the bottom line perspective, there were many non-cash items, including the revaluation of minority interest . perversely, we are more successful in the u.k. market. it does follow through the pay and l. from a topline growth perspective, really proud of it. yvonne: we talked about the north american market which has been growing in the u.s. why do you think customer growth in australia and new zealand has slowed down and do you see a reversal? cathie: yes. --- nick: we are older than the australian market now. they still think they are strong topline growth with frequency continuing to accelerate in the australian region. from a u.s. perspective, he saw over 175% year on year growth and now a lot of just contributing region, we are in far earlier stages and the growth of the u.s. market so we are seeing new customer acquisition continue to deliver strongly in the frequency

nick, there werer the. there was an intelligence assessment a few days ago that said this would take place in 30 to 90 days. u.s. intelligence didn't anticipate this would happen merely within hours. bring us up to speed with what you're seeing. >> reporter: yeah, it's important to have a sort of slight pause on where we feel we are in terms of kabul's security. from what we can see, we are not seeing the taliban entering the city from multiple points as some of the reports have suggested. in fact, a source in the presidential palace, who, obviously, have skin in the game here to fashion the narrative in a certain way, facts suggest that some of the panic was caused by a clash at a bank which we heard from other sources. we heard sounds of occasional cracks of gunfire. not abnormal in kabul. what is abnormal is the scale of american helicopters circulating around the area of the embassy. i have not seen anything like there in 20 years in terms of the volume. a lot of american activity right now. where does

in one of the remarks he pledged, as nick said, any american back to the u.s. that wants to come back. he will bring any afghan that wanted to get out, it brings them a step further than before. >> clear. any american who wants to come home, we will get you home. make no mistake, this evacuation mission is dangerous. it involves risks to our armed forces. it is being conducted under difficult circumstances. i cannot promise what the final outcome will be and what it will be that, it will be without risk of loss, but as commander in chief i can assure you i will mobilize every resource necessary. >> reporter: you are right, we did hear some con throw verse yy discussions. clarissa ward said folks were getting trapped outside of the airport in a mob that was sometimes turned violent. they would wait hours upon hours. president biden's own secretary of defense austin told house lawmakers yesterday in a private call cnn learned that they did learn of reports of americans getting beaten outside of the airport. we talked and president biden said that he had no allies

. >> we go back to nick paton walsh, shhe's, again, in qatar this morning. what do we know about the rocket attack? >> reporter: the closing hours of the u.s. presence in the longest war. the five rockets fired, it seems at the direction of hamid karzai international may have been entre intercepted by the airport defenses the u.s. had in place. it points the finger toward isis-k. responsible for thursday's suicide blast that killed over 170 afghans and 13 american personnel and, also, it seems for yesterday's -- were the target of yesterday's drone strike by the united states, which they, appears to have an interrupted an imminent threat to the airport. we're learning about the strike and the time initially the united states said they had hit what they referred to as a vehicle which caused a secondary explosion they said it was proof they hit the correct target. that the time, they thought they were not dealing with any reports of civilian casualties. at this stage, though, yesterday they were released another statement suggesting that the secondary explosio

nick, talk us through the main findings. yeah, you join us in man, i've got in antalya, in southern turkey where the destruction has been widespread and quite horrified. if you just look over here, you can just see the devastation. the acres and acres of forest and farmland destroyed the fire swept through in a matter of minutes. and this kind of extreme climate event is why this report is at so important. highlighting the danger that we are in ends where you get a real sense of what people have been through. you look down on the village here, you can see there's a house standing behind it. there's a mosque before that there were 30 or 4 more houses. the 5 went through, destroyed them all, destroyed people's lives. they will be reduced to rebel. it is an extraordinary scene down the, the people that you meet on the street. a just shell shocked, and that is the reality of what is happening. the i p c. c. say that no one is safe and we do if we do not act, who will it is the most comprehensive report as i say in the states of
