the oakland unified school district is set to return tomorrow. a small coalition of teachers and parents tell us the district needs to delay reopening. a small caravan drove through oakland yesterday and teachers were voicing their concerns about the rate of infections. low rates of vaccinations in neighborhoods surrounding schools where they work. they also called for more distance learning options to be offered this school year. there will be mask requirements and improved ventilation in classes, but the school system is not requiring proof of vaccination for staff. parents who have been pushing for a full return to class voiced their concerns about the way the schools are handling staff. >> i would like to see oakland unified do what san jose has done, which i think is a reasonable ask and that is, teachers or any staff in schools to be vaccinated and if they choose not to at this point they have to undergo i believe weekly or twice a week testing. >> according to oakland unified schools 580 out of 36,000 students have opted to learn from home

members of two classrooms in the oakland unified school district. one montclair elementary, the other at oakland high school, have been ordered to stay at home for the next 10 days as a precaution. ktvu saleh rasmus live now to explain how these quarantines ali, come just the first week after school began with some positive covid cases in those classes, oakland unified school district says there are five covid cases at montclair elementary and nine at oakland high school. the district won't give us the breakdown of how many of those cases or students versus staffer teachers, but under alameda county health guidelines if there are more than three positive cases in a class the entire group of students and their teacher have to go into a 10 day quarantine at home. most students started the school day as usual at montclair elementary this morning, but there is an entire class here. absent today, a total of five positive cases of the virus were reported this week at montclair elementary, forcing all the students and a teacher in one class to stay home fo

our news reporter has the story. >> reporter: oakland unified school district will welcome students back to school monday, august 9 and teachers are ready. >> everyday when i come in i have to fill out a form about if i'm feeling okay so that our protocols in place and we will have a tent on site if students do feel sick that they can go to and then they have rapid covid testing. >> reporter: from covert testing to mask mandates for anyone inside the building. >> it's going to be very hot some days so you might want to take it off but i'm going to keep it on as much as i can. >> reporter: school officials are also highly encouraging vaccines though they are not mandatory for students or staff. here's the plan if there is a case of covid-19. >> they will isolated home for 14 days and beyond that, anybody that might've been exposed can stay in class as long as i get tested twice of they don't have any symptoms. if they have symptoms than they have to stay home as well. >> reporter: the school's spokesperson says there are no plans to return to distance learning in the event of a covid-19 c

unified says it will not follow that trend. the move comes after school leaders and marin and san jose announce a will require proof of vaccinations for teachers and staff. not everybody agrees with the decision by san francisco unified kron four's. dan thorn live for us in the newsroom with the story. dan. >> well, ken and pam, the san francisco unified school district did say they are encouraging all employees to get vaccinated. it's just not going to be mandated at this time. but the united educators say despite many of their 6,000 plus members being vaccinated. it would be safer for everyone to make it a requirement for teachers to return to the classroom along with testing. >> san francisco public school teachers and staff will not be required to be vaccinated against covid-19 the move follows most but not all of california's school districts were asking san francisco unified school district to actually. >> either require or mandate vaccination or submit to regular testing. frank lara is the executive vice president of the

santa clara unified reopening today, obviously a bizarre time for us. are your officers doing anything differently this season? >> we are doing things differently but we are also doing things we have done in the past. safety is our main concern. one thing we have done every year is trained all the school becad thorrible n what to tive edy a haainevta employees,it wen as well as it could have isg co i think we will have more than parents dropping kids at school. so we will have a additional patrol units. we'll have patrol units monitoring schools that have a lot of traffic. kids with masks also. make sure your child has a close fitting good mask because it would have a tendency sometimes to blur some of their vision or block sme of their vision. the kids need to be safe in walking to school also. there are a lot of things we are doing. we do continue to have school resource officers and they're out there in full force working with the kids as a resource and always talking about safety. >> we haven't seen a lot of kids walking to school in the last year a
