nbc bay area's marianne favro joins us. it's amazing the pilot walked away from this crash. >> reporter: it really is unbelievable. take a look at this. the pilot managed to avoid the water and land the plane on its belly on this marshy area. it's pretty miraculous the pilot's okay, given one wing of the plane was broken off when he clipped a power line. the faa says the twin-engine beechcraft baron crashed just before 2:00 this afternoon. the pilot was the only one on board. firefighters say he walked out on his own and was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. we talked with a pilot who frequently flies his single engine plane out of palo alto airport. he says given the tough landing he believes the pilot was experienced. >> i've heard of incidents around this airport that didn't turn out okay for everybody involved. so i think it is very lucky that he did make it. >> reporter: palo alto fire says a hazmat crew was called out because some fuel was leaking in the marshland. now a private environmental company is work

now let's bring it back to the bay area weather. we're on the other side of this story. it is improving our weather. the same weather system that is bringing the mountains. it is pushing that smoke off to the east. it will certainly switch it up. it pretty clear at the cloing. orinda. overall, i think wave good day coming our way for the start of september. we'll start it off chilly with that fog at the coast. it will begin with 54 in the south bay. the peninsula, 65. the tri-valley, 52. more of these low 50s over the north bay. the daytime highs cooling off another they have to, instead of the upper 90s inland like we had this past week. mid 70s in palo alto and over the bair to frag. my seven-day forecast will show that we do have more comfortable weather coming our way. i can see no problem with the smoke. by the afternoon. it will still be okay to be outside and breathing that air. next monday and tuesday, if labor de comes in, 95 monday and it drops to 99 tomorrow. >> get out and enjoy it. yeah. >>> happening now. >>> the santa rosa employees must show testing or a

nbc bay area's thom jensen is joining us now. it is a popular spot where you are in the south shore, what are you seeing around you? >> reporter: a weekend like this would normally be packed with tourists instead of firefighters but as we came in here today, what we saw was an amazing fire fight. hundreds of firefighters who saved all of the cabins coming in at echo lake road and they even without a lower echo road here to protect historic and treasured cabin and doing it by the boat loads literally. just below a rocky summit. firefighters from as far away as texas and arizona pack in 4500 feet of fire hose to attack the flames above them. >> we are taking advantage of these great conditions to try to get this fire put out for good. >> reporter: along a smoky east shore, tahoe, one woman tells me she's breathing a sigh of relief because of the efforts of these firefighters. her home is safe and so are her friends' and family's home. >> reporter: with highway 50 closed, no one in the family have been able to check on the cabin tha

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. whether you've lived there or been there recently or years ago, lake tahoe is a special place for so many of us. and our special place is going through something we've never seen, evacuations and possible widespread destruction. the caldor fire is showing no signs of slowing down. these next 24 hours will be crucial in saving the south lake tahoe basin. right now, heavy smoke, poor visibility and strong winds. that's a dangerous mix. those winds are capable of picking up spot fires, carrying embers a half-mile away. that includes closer to communities in south lake tahoe near the heavenly resort or even in the other direction toward kirkwood. most homeowners forced to evacuate. you know that part of the story, and they left their sprinklers on. this homeowner covered 100% of his home in fire-resistant material from the roof to the ground. what is do the south shore look like? usually bustling with tourists and gamblers. look at it now, police cruiser and really nothing much. about 30,
