cnn's matt rivers saw it firsthand. he filed this report from ciudad ocuna which is across the border. >> reporter: just across the border from del rio, this is the point where dozens and dozens of people were traveling back ask forth between the united states and mexico. people, most of whom were staying in that encampment in the u.s. where we've seen thousands of haitian migrants gather over the past week or so, just up the river from where we are. but because of the conditions there, many people would come here to the mexican side, cross over freely allowed to do so by law enforcement, to do everything from charge a cell phone to get food, water, even diapers for their kids, and then put them in garbage bags and bring them back across the river. that had been happening for a while. that is no longer happening at this point. basically what happened at some point during the day, mid afternoon, more or lesson thursday here, were about six or seven immigration officials here in mexico kind of formed a mini human chain an

cnn's clarissa ward is live in kabul. general milley stood by his prediction that al qaeda and/or isis would reconstitute themselves in afghanistan within the next 6 to 36 months. give us a reality check. >> i have to say that was pretty sobering to hear, jake, because most analysts have put the sort of timeline somewhere closer to about five years. listen, we know al qaeda is present on the ground. we know isis-k has a presence on the ground. we were able to meet with a senior isis-k commander here in kabul at a hotel just days before the taliban took power. so we know they have a presence. when we interviewed that commander, he did not show any interest at the moment in transnational attacks. but, of course, the real concern is that can change very quickly, particularly once the taliban is not the primary enemy anymore. they might start looking outward, and the concern, of course, as well, is with the over the horizon capabilities. it makes it much more difficult to track their activities. as we saw with that drone stri

this is "cnn newsroom." fresh fighting was reported saturday in afghanistan's panjshir value i why, the only territory the taliban haven't captured. panjshir is home to the national resistant front which has been opposing the taliban for decades. the fighting intensifies. in the capital the company's fragile economy got a small boost saturday when the largest currency exchange market opened for the first time in three weeks. ordinary afghans have been starved for cash because banks are limiting withdrawals. journalist ben farmer is in kabul and joins us by phone with the latest from there. let's start with the fighting in the panjshir. what is the latest on the conflict there? it looks as though we may have lost ben. we might try and reach him again later on. >>> now earlier, i spoke with ben and so we're going to play a little tape of that interview here. >> reporter: as you say, both sides have claimed victories and successes. some of the independent information we know is that there is an aid agency which

cnn's paolo sandoval joining us. paolo, what more are we learning about this case and the history of these two? >> reporter: jim and erica, gabby petito's family attorney, what they're doing now is begging her boyfriend to break his silence and to help investigators try to find her. police say that brian laundrie was traveling with petito several months in her 2012 ford transit van. they documented their journey in videos and posts. her family reported her missing on saturday, and they said that they were last in contact with her during the last week of august. laundrie, who police definitely want to speak to, made it back home to north port, florida, which is where detectives actually processed the van. they say they recovered material, but they didn't say exactly what that was. authorities do claim that laundrie's family has only referred them to their attorney which is fueling the frustrations for the family that's just trying to find answers. >> last time i checked, their child was home. my child is nowhere to be

cnn's polo sandoval is in philadelphia for us. polo, what is the latest on the recovery and where are you? >> reporter: you know, fred, it was a few days ago that pennsylvania national guards men were navigating floodwaters around the city and some of the rescues to make that happen but now potentially focusing on the main water ways and getting water out of the roads that might be flooding the roadways as we look here in philadelphia over the river, there's actually rows over two feet above major flood that's dropped significantly but nonetheless, you can see the water still raging here. the department of transportation officials have been working around the clock to pump water out of the water ways and into this river and that's one of the main reasons why authorities are recommending to people not get too close to it but the other side of the things is the clean-up process. this picture really giving an idea of the kind of stuff that floods, when they basically just flooded this area, left behind. the trees, miscellaneous debri

and anger growing of london airport, thanks to covid checks. ♪ live from cnn center, this is cnn newsroom with robyn curnow. great to have you along this hour, thank you for joining me. we begin the show in afghanistan where taliban fighters trying to seize north of kabul. the rugged district is home to antitaliban forces. the only territory not under taliban control. both sides claiming successes. cnn can't independently verify the accuracy of those reports. in the capitol, afghans being stopped for cash, most banks as you can see remained closed are limiting withdrawals. there are words that kabul airport have resumed some operations. qatar ambassador witnessed the first flight taken off. >> let's talk about the fi fighting, how critical is it and what's going on there? >> it is very important to watch what's happening, this is about 90 minutes drive, panjshir valley, it is not under the taliban control. you can say both sides are quite a success. what we do know independently there is an international aid charity that runs a hospital in panjshir valley. the taliban reached the village

the "cnn newsroom" continues with jim acosta right now. >>> you're live in the "cnn newsroom." i'm jim acosta in washington. it's do or die time for president joe biden's sweeping economic agenda. it could come apart at the seams as democrats face the potential implosion of the $1 trillion infrastructure bill, and biden's much larger $3.5 trillion signature spending package. tomorrow the house reaches its self-imposed deadline to act on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, but house speaker nancy pelosi conceded this morning that a vote might not happen on monday. >> we will bring the bill to the floor tomorrow for consideration. but, you know, i'm never bringing a bill to the floor that doesn't have the votes. >> it's a big hint there. so what's the problem? progressive democrats say they won't vote for the $1 trillion bill without passing the larger package, and if you're hoping for a last-minute shift on that, it's not looking good. >> i mean, the speaker is an incredibly good vote counter, and she knows exactly where her caucus stands. and we've been really clear on that too

cnn's senior analyst joins me. ellie, you already have goenz saying they're going to challenge this in court. do they have a challenge? how will this workout in court? >> jim, certainly they have the power to make a challenge in court. but i think those challenges are unlikely to succeed on balance. going back to the founding of this country, one of the fundamental powers of government is to regulate public health, public safety. the supreme court various times over centuries have told us governments do have the power in certain circumstances to require vaccines. this law doesn't go quite that far. courts are going to be looking at two things. one, is there a reasonable medical need when you look at the spread of the delta variant, when you look at the effectiveness of vaccines, i think that's an easy case to make. two, is there an undue burden put on these businesses? i think the argument there, they're not even requiring vaccines. there is also this option of getting testing. the biden administration will argue t

>>> you are live in the cnn newsroom. jim acosta is off today. former president trump returns to the campaign trial tonight in georgia. the battleground state he lost in 2020 and where just last week in 2021, he again pressured officials to reverse that defeat. asking georgia's secretary of state to quote, start the process of discertifying the election or whatever the correct legal remedy is and announce the true winner, unquote. this is the very reason some top georgia republicans wish the former president wasn't in the state tonight. now, when he takes the podium, he'll be throwing his weight behind legendary football player turned challenger, herschel walker, in the state senate race, but the worry is that he will ditch that plan and focus once again on the big lie. in just a moment, i'll speak to georgia's republican lieutenant governor about that. but first, let's go to perry, georgia, with joe johns. joe, you are a veteran of many of these rallies. tell me what you're seeing on the ground right now. what the general atmosphere is like in p

let's get to cnn's whitney wild who joins us now. this is a former trump aide, what else is he saying about what is going to happen on saturday? >> reporter: well he's laying out a couple of ground rules for the hundreds of people, law enforcement are expecting to arrive. a couple of the ground rules, boris, are don't wear political paraphernalia. supposedly on its face this is an effort to try to distance themselves from the politics and for meme charged in their role in january 6. and he also said travel in groups and be respectful of security and law enforcement. the organizer of this event, matt brainard, pushing these potential people coming to washington to be especially cognizant of following the rules, following the laws and not bringing weapons, here is what he told cnn. >> we've got a larmly peaceful crowd. we've had two events in washington, d.c. so far at department of justice and at the prison and there have been no incidents so far. no one is bringing a weapon that is part of our crowd. i could assure the police that. >

nic robertson, cnn, kabul, afghanistan. >>> and cnn's anna coren has reported extensively from afghanistan including on a recent trip there. she joins me now from hong kong with the latest on the taliban takeover. good to see you, anna. let's talk specifically about those brave women taking to the streets and pushing back against the taliban's efforts to prevent them from working and attending school. what more are you learning about that? >> reporter: such courageous women, rosemary. doing it with the taliban looking on like it was only a small protest of about a dozen women. we've just got off the phone with one of those women who was there and she says that this protest was designed to tell thesthe international community, the united states, what is happening on ground. because the ministry of women's affairs who she worked for, most of those women worked for has been disbanded, they don't have a salary. they do not have a job. she said, i need to feed my children. i need the united states, the international community to tell the taliban that they need to provide women with jobs. yes, w

cnn's dan simon is at a polling place in sacramento. dan, tell us what you're seeing there and is turnout expected to be big? >> reporter: hi, jim. we are at the sacramento county registrar's office. and the polls will open at the top of the hour. there will be a lot of activity here today. this is actually where the votes will be tabulated later today. and behind me you can see this drop-off box and already seen a number of cars, people dropping off their ballots. but in terms of the overall turnout, we'll just have to wait and see. but we should know, at least by tonight, whether or not governor newsome keeps his job in office. and it's worth repeating that this recall election really began to gain steam during the heart of the pandemic. there was criticism over governor newsome's policies with respect to covid-19. that led republicans to get the 1.5 million signatures, which was necessary to get this recall on the ballot. but in the days and the weeks leading up to this election, newsome and his supporters were happy to have this ele

most of which was on cnn and other stations. the reality is it was a very chaotic situation as people suddenly became aware there was no government and that the taliban were going to take over kabul. they were evacuated in a 14-day period. incredible show of the ability of the american military to do something. now what is left in afghanistan? there's numbers range from 200 to 100 or less than 100 americans. why that are still there, what their situation is. i think the state department and the intelligence community has more information. doesn't want to share that information for what should be obvious reasons with regard to the afghan men and women that supported us over those 20 years, we know that perhaps 100,000 or 120,000 have left. there are others in other countries that have left. we continue to work to bring out of afghanistan additional afghans who work with us. some of that is done by private organizations. there's a military veterans organization. it's very, very good at this. we continue and my own office to contin
