governor newsom. but 32.3% said yes. elders candidacy made them more likely to vote to keep governor newsome in office. 44.4% said elders candidacy did not impact their vote whatsoever. and finally we asked voters regardless of the recall effort. would they vote to reelect governor newsom in 2022 or do they think that it's time for someone new. the answers are pretty split on this one. you can see a slight majority 52 and a half percent said that they would reelect governor newsome and 47 and a half percent said that it was time for somebody new. so it looks like of governor newsome survives. this recall that he will have his work cut out for him in the meantime, we're going to have some more exit polling data coming through here tonight. so i'll make sure to keep you guys updated as soon as those numbers get in. >> hello. thank you for that. next. at 8, the first results are coming in. we're going to be back breaking those down county by county. i was hit by a car and needed help. i called the barnes firm. that was the

newsom saying that elder is a climate, an iron. he is against women's rights while elder is saying that newsome can't defend his record on pretty much anything in california from crime to homelessness to the high cost of living here in the state. again, the camp feeling pretty confident that they will come out on top tonight. the governor's strategy has been suggesting voters to simply vote no on the recall and then leaving the rest of the ballot blank. but there is still a possibility for republicans to recall this governor registered democrats largely outnumber republicans here in the state. but. >> conservatives are right now motivated to get involved with this recall election. the governor has also been facing some difficulties in terms of his important supporters such as latino who have sort of lagging behind when it comes to voting numbers. governor newsome is expected to be here in sacramento tonight as the election results roll in. but we have not gotten any public information as to where the governor will be over the next

this was neck and neck in 2018 when and newsom went head to head. it was 0.3% in favor of newsome. so basically a dead heat. but here you see a pretty convincing no vote in orange and then. >> that's orange county as well here. san diego county. 60% said no. and then the inland empire which, you know, riverside county went for john that they had a majority of voters who supported john in 2018, but here the majority voting get not. everybody's reporting here. 57%, but nothing is going to change the outcome here. when you talk big picture that and the other county of interest. you know, very the high population and san bernardino. it was close with and newsom in 2018. but here, you know, you have a substantial, a majority of voters that said no to the recall that that's really where where this was was. one. you talk about the bay area, all the millions people here you go down there. if they're all green and green means no, then you're not recalling the governor. and this is setting the stage not only for his reelection campaign. whatever else he plans to do politically in the future

. >> it's big news for governor newsom. it's also big news for democrats writ large in the united states. what we saw this race really boil down to is governor newsom, who was pressing strict covid measures, who was running in line with the biden white house on what they were trying to do on coronavirus. and then the elder campaign, which was pledging to reverse many of the coronavirus orders that governor newsom has put in place. the result is resounding. newsom was certainly relieved tonight. it wasn't necessarily a victory speech. but he was clearly very relieved he had passed this hurdle. the no vote had won overwhelmingly. and it is going to be almost a stamp of approval for democrats across the country now who can feel confident that they can run on these covid measures and in some ways strict covid policy tackling the coronavirus is good politics. it's also worth noting that newsom nationalized this race. he made it about more than just california. and you know that elder has talked about homelessness and drought and

yes means yes recall gavin newsom. all 58 counties will start lighting up within next couple of minutes. take you through what to expect here. way they do elections in california, a lot of mail-in voting, usually vast majority are cast by mail, many sent in last few days, weeks. counties have been receiving them, processing them, they're going to report them out within minutes of polls closing. in 2020, the presidential election last fall, first report from any county in california came 11 minutes after poll closing. by 25 minutes after, we had 40% of all the votes cast in the state already reported out. this thing looks blank and empty right now but we're going to get a lot of votes quickly here. to take you through, three types of votes, the stuff you're going to see next few minutes, next hour or so, going to be mail votes as i just said. votes that arrived in the mail a couple of weeks ago, days ago, up until yesterday, early today. it's most friendly to democrats, the history on this. and numbers you see right awa
