. >> chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us this is one of those today where depending on where you were with in the bay area. totally different situations. you know, it's really interesting. like san jose last 48 hours no rainfall at all. some of the mountain peaks in the bay area over 7 inches of rain. so yeah, i mean, what a contrast and that's what you see when you get one. he said this is a type system. setting up outside. you've got a lot of clouds. a lot of moisture out there, but you need a way to squeeze out that moisture and that usually is done with the systems or graphically. that means by some of the mountain ranges. and so here you go. middle peak in the north bay. well over 7 inches, almost 8 inches of rain in the past. 48 hours. mount tam almost 6 inches of rain samara fell over 3 inches of rain. san francisco downtown over an inch of rain pacifica. yeah. almost 2 inches of rain in oakland. you can see they kind of fall in that rain shadow too. just a quarter of an inch of rain. but there is still plenty more to come. all right. you can kind of see it now a signi

and then last into monday, kron four's meteorologists chief meteorologist lawrence karnow tracking this storm for us. lawrence. yeah, this is a very large storm really to get this at any time of year, but especially in october to see. >> us kind of atmospheric river event heading our way is something to watch out for him. seen anything like this for quite some time outside right now. we've been catching a break this afternoon. of course we start with some rain drops early on. now drying things out across most the bay area, just some light showers. 3 reported out there. but yeah, we're watching out for the possibility of some flash flooding. you see the areas shaded in yellow here from pacifica down to half moon bay along san mateo county into santa cruz county as well, expecting some extremely heavy rainfall starting on sunday. you might see as much as 4, maybe 6 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains, flash flooding, a very real possibility. if we get that kind of rain and you get in some of those burn scar areas not only from this year but previous years likely to see some debris

meanwhile, we do want to check in with kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow, who has monitoring the high fire danger along with these gusty winds as well. lawrence. yeah, i just the last 2 hours here. we've seen the gusts in american canyon gusting. >> over 30 miles per hour. that's where we sit right now. those very strong gusty dry offshore winds continuing to blow. you see the fire located right near the mountains here. so it's got a lot of grass. there are a lot of fuel to burn. and unfortunately that wind is coming and not the best direction that is coming more out of the north northwesterly direction and that is going to bring the fire potentially back towards some of the urban areas you've got, of course, high school right here located near the arrow. then you've got all the homes out here as well. so those folks in those areas are probably trying to get out there as quickly as they can just to be on the safe side there are many building structures all along here. you see all the urban areas where many peta folks live there right near little knoll drive, then you can see

but meteorologist lawrence karnow for how things look tonight. is extremely dangerous fire conditions over the next 24 hours. i cam. >> emphasize that anymore. but historically, this is that time of year where we've had some of our worst fires in tonight. everything is coming together again to bring with it the strong gusty wind. we felt that around the bay area today already some very blustery winds out there. we've seen some fire started. we've got the drought conditions. now you get an extreme event like this and it gets dangerous. some of the winds out for today. yes, some of the gusts mount saint helene, a 49 miles per hour hawkeye in the north, a 40 mile an hour gust pine mountain 30 mile an hour gust, big rock in the north bay 36 mile an hour gusts. the berkeley hills 36 mile an hour gust mission peak to 49 miles per hour and it has been gusty all around the bay area will continue to do so over the next 24 hours. in we're watching red flag warnings up across the peaks in the north bay. much of the east bay expecting some strong gusty winds

and our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is joining us now with what we can expect going in. >> to read big weekend. we've got some plans. so many people doing things around the bay area and everywhere else and looks like the weather is going to cooperate as we get the weekend. but what a gorgeous day today. still, some clear skies out along the coastline. but i think some clouds begin to move in to our skies little bit later on this evening. the rain track. you can see staying well to the north right now so a much needed break in the stormy weather. and we're going to dry out for another day or so. but then things begin to change. you can see that area of low pressure off the coastline that begins a sneaking a little bit closer. i think that will bring the return of some low clouds and some fog, some mid to high level clouds for tomorrow. the temperatures going start to cool down just a little bit by tomorrow afternoon. now the long-range forecast that's gets more interesting. the pattern is still very progressive. that means it's open to more storms right now that weak system kin

kron 4 dot com. >> and chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. yeah. he's got a lot going on. yeah. you know, it's interesting how the rain is breaking down lighter amounts to kind of the rain shadow effect for parts of the east bay and some of the north bay mountains. now over 2 inches of rain already. and it's common to see over an inch in some of the mountain tops. but we continue to see it out there. mainly just a light rain continuing. really this afternoon. pretty persistent through the evening hours now breaking up just a little bit. but you see pockets amounts that are a little bit heavier into san mateo. you see the yellow there on the shades in the rainfall but not much down in the san jose right now keeping fairly dry and the east bay see some more rain drops continue to move toward san ramon lafayette in concord in antioch and lighter showers in the north bay too. all right. here's the rain forecast model. you see overnight tonight, more of those scattered showers throughout the night tonight. it's tomorrow morning. i think the commute early on tomorrow. very, very

and that's where we begin our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. >> who's tracking all this rain, yeah, guys. been fun watching this. come on shore today. of course you see the showers kind of hit miss. then it started to pick up in the afternoon and evening and here we sit right now. the scattered showers continuing around the bay area tonight and more of that to come on and off throughout tonight and tomorrow to nothing but tomorrow afternoon, that rain line may begin to shift a little further to the north right now. it's pretty soggy. pretty wet around the bay area. specially the southern half of the bay area toward the golden gate bridge got a mix of fog in a couple showers out there now. yeah. you want to take it easy out there rainfall totals get more impressive as we go through time here now, the past 24 hours, more than an inch and a half in the can't feel san anselmo knowles and it's into tenths fremont. about a 3rd of an inch. san francisco over a quarter of an inch over a 3rd now 1500's in oakland and some of the mountains around the bay area in the north bay easily over an

our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us. he has a look at what is coming our way. yes, certainly scary making these forecasts for these large storms. you know, sometimes you just don't pan out. but this one really looking like it's coming together all pointing toward sunday as being the main event out there. little break in the storm clouds. a nice evening as things have dried out a bit. but. >> again, more rain over the past 24 hours, adding to the totals over the last 3 days. and here you go. middle peak over 10 inches of rain in the last 3 days mount tam 8 inches of rain, even samara fell over 3 and a half inches of rain, almost 2 inches in san francisco and how about oakland, they've been pretty dry now over an inch of rain downtown oakland and san jose just over a quarter of an inch and we've got a lot to go. that storm system coming through this morning. early on and then behind that double rainbows, little sunshine out there into the afternoon kind of catching a much needed break before we get ready for the main event things drying out outside right now but

chief meteorologist lawrence karnow standing by with a look ahead. you know, we're talking about some scattered showers popping up around the bay area. and pam moore gave me this look like there's not a chance live. not that we've got about the some showers popping up around the bay area. not much, though. you can see kind of broken skies as a cold front kind of pulls into town falling apart as it moves on by. but there you go. there's the green showing up on the screen outside right now. you see some very light activity out there. some of those pop-up showers begin to show up in parts of the north bay. now. not that impressive. a lot of this is going to be very good, which means you're seeing rain drops in the atmosphere and a lot of it evaporates before it hits the surface. but yeah, unless you start to see some of the cells a little yellow know there's a chance a couple of sprinkles could make their way to the ground. seeing something similar for the santa cruz mountains. you've got some of that moisture moving on overhead too. so slight chance, y

let's check in with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. it's nice to say that. i'm just going to say i haven't heard and they say winter storm in a long seems like forever. but yeah, we're going to see it up there. don't go up there in your shorts flip-flops and expect to be real nice. summery weather in the tahoe area over the sierra nevada and back. >> this weekend. in fact, you're seeing some wet roads out there. this is donner summit right now. a little slick out there on the roads are getting some precipitation up there already. and there's more to come. in fact, the snow level is going to be dropping as we head through the night tonight and tomorrow. so you can likely see some snow across some of the higher peaks. the snow level starting out at about 7500 feet but likely to drop down to about 6500. so that will encompass all the passes there. if you're headed that direction, that continues through the day tomorrow on and off all the way down near 70. in fact, they've got winter weather advisories up in the 70 expecting maybe as much as 4 to 6 inches of sno

our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. >> has more on that. yeah, we've got a long way to go. this could be a long night around the bay area. fire concerns not only in american canyon but really across a good part of the bay area thing setting up now you've got high pressure off the coastline. you've got a low that has dropped justice. the east of us in the south. >> and then you've got the difference in the pressures and all those when you see him racing in the red arrows there as they continue to roll on by and very gusty winds around the bay area today. some of those gusts size 50 miles per hour right in and around the fire right now the winds have tapered off a little bit. that though it was blown over 30 miles an hour. just early on this evening. now we're back down least into the teens is still strong enough and of concern. but that fire looks like the firefighters are getting a pretty good handle on that 50% leased is contained. but they've still got some work to do. and tonight the pattern is going to change a little bit overnight tonight. right now we're seeing more o

so let's check in with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. he has the outside lands weekend forecast. but what about tonight with the fog. like lot of fog out there. i think we're dealing with some drizzle or light showers overnight tonight. >> maybe some of that lingering into tomorrow morning. so if you're going to head out the outside lands starting at noon tomorrow. the better chances by the afternoon. >> things start to break up a little bit. i think that drizzle start to wind down some of the plot of some cool temperatures highs. they're only going to be in the low 60's. it could be a little chilly and expect a lot of cloud cover. so dress warmly. if you are headed out there cool shot from the east bay hills. you see some of that fog in a bounce up against the hills. the light down below from oakland and berkeley and we'll see plenty of that fog into the bay overnight tonight. in fact, we've got a cold front off the coastline. not much of one and it's kind of fall apart as run right in the ridge of high pressure that brought us some nic

chief meteorologist lawrence karnow with the hot weather that's coming through this weekend. i can see that now all the police arrive. come take your way. but certainly need to look at the beautiful side all the way toward the coastline now looking good, but. >> we are seeing a little patchy fog out there. hanging just off the water's edge and that will move in a little bit later on. temperature wise number still very nice. 74 degrees right now in fremont, 72 now in san jose just kind of a nice evening. you would you like to hang outside, maybe go for a walk 74 degrees and 7 tail 77 now in concord, 78 pittsburgh, 70 in a bottle and 74 degrees in san and sell even 81 in saint so these temperatures running warm and you know, we're going for tomorrow. looks that. couple patches of fog. you see hanging off the coastline there. a little more northerly component to the wind developing for tonight. that means a lot of sunshine coming our way. couple patches of fog may form right along the coastal section. but it's only going to be a thin lair and that will dissipate pretty quickly.

chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. boy lawrence, that yesterday was a great to see and we're hoping for a lot more. yeah, that amount of rain that we could be seeing. this could bring an end. >> the fire season of this all works out. we can say goodbye to that. get ready for more of the wintry stuff. looks like it's just beginning to set itself up. we had a first taste of the yesterday. just some light showers popping up around the bay area. really most folks just less than a 10th of an inch of petaluma a little bit more. but certainly it has been dry and we need that rain looks likely the series of storms coming our way. petaluma. they have 1100's there and santa rosa, 70700's in san anselmo. 8, 100's in the san francisco only 300's in oakland than 800 in the sunnyvale so that storm system, not a whole lot of rain with that moving out of town all the way over utah right now. but now you've got that next storm system setting up off the coastline. and this is where things are going to start to get interesting. i think o

we do want to go to kron. 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow tracking the very latest. a wind that are being felt right now. that area. yeah. it's subside a little bit. that's the good news. we have some a gust over 30, even 36 miles per hour in that area. and firefighters will tell you that once those winds exceed about 40 miles an hour. so they just kind of back away. they don't try to stop the fire. they just try to save the people that might be involved and that kind of situation. we haven't reached that point tonight, but it's still a very, very active a very dangerous situation with those winds blowing over 18, even 20 miles an hour. >> in and around an active fire like put up here on the screen to you can see the areas shaded in red. that's actually where the red flag warning is located. this place is just outside of that. nonetheless, you get those winds that are blowing in that area and anywhere around the bay area and you get those nice dry grass fields while that thing can get a pretty explosive in a hurry. so people are evacuating. now. they're evacuating pe

but no rain. >> chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. boy, there has been rain and you've got impressive totals. yeah, it really impressive over the last couple of days. these last 2 storm systems. >> bringing a ton of rain. at least the parts of the bay area. all that moisture kind of flowing through. not really well organized with the 2nd half and so all depend on where you are at. if you get much rain. in fact, out there right now. a lot of clouds. things are kind of drying out. but look at some of the totals over the 48 hours, over 8 inches of rain at middle p comer in. how about mount tam over 6 inches of rain in the last 48 hours. samara fell over 3 inches of rain. san francisco over an inch pacific almost 2 inches oakland, only a quarter of an inch of rain and that's because they fall kind of in that rain shadow and san jose, nothing reported all kind. works out. but there's still a lot of rain to come. so if you haven't done much in your neighborhood. well, we've got more to work with out there. another storm system this more of

karnow has been tracking the winds in the weather. certainly a high fire danger lights. yeah, very scary this afternoon. i remember graham said, hey, we've got a fire going in american canyon. i thought, oh, no, not now. >> because this is one of those extreme nights where we can see fires like this just erupt so rapidly that they're extremely dangerous now we continue to see the winds in around american canyon everywhere is seeing some breezy conditions. the winds have backed off a little bit. that is good news and way to go to firefighters. they've already got this 50% contained. they got to get the rest of it, though. but look at the winds they blowing in excess of 3036 miles an hour. now backed off. and just this last hour, all the way down to 60 miles per hour. now that is still coming out of a north northwesterly wind that means the wind is going continue to blow fire in this direction. of course, you've got some train that it's working with in and around this area. fires tend like to run uphill if they can. of course, if you ge
