obesity rates for american indians and alaska natives are at a critical level. according to the cdc, 48% of the american indian and alaska native population over age 18 is obese. 48%, compared to 30% of the non-hispanic white population. obesity is a significant risk factor as we know for type two diabetes and heart disease to the leading causes of death for indigenous people in the united states. i've seen some modest improvements in recent years. american indians and alaska natives still have the highest prevalence of type two diabetes in the nation. and american indian and alaska native adults are almost three times more likely than non hispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes. heart disease is the leading cause of death for american indians and alaska natives and the prevalence of coronary heart disease is about 50% greater for indigenous peoples. in my personal experience, i served as a family physician with the gila river indian community in arizona for a number of years. this is a community with among the highest rates of type two diabetes in t

we do see an intergenerational impact that has been studied in american indian populations. we see a direct impact of loss of territory, but the other thing seat when we have unresolved trauma or adverse childhood experiences is more poverty in those populations. we also see people who are self-medicating, not always with drugs or alcohol. some self-medicating with food. we have to look at this holistically and recognize that each population is different but the impact on health can have ripple effects that we do not see right away. it is vitally important to have diverse voices and experiences at the table. i am pleased and honored to be part of these discussions. sen. booker: we are honored that you are here. we talked already about the challenges unique to latino communities in terms of advertising targeted to them that is disproportionate to the population as a whole, but i want to ask what types of policies do you think would best address the specific nutrition challenges in black and latino communities? >> as dr. warne mentioned, it is important that we ensure that all

my mother was in the american indian movement. we were always active in, in issues. we're always expected to act a certain way and going up we would joke about like, why do we have to be the all to me, indian. and it's just how we were raised, even in my community, they're like, oh, your mom's phyllis, younger people know, but i'm proud of that. you know, i co founded the women of all red nations. and we had to rise to the occasion of sterilization, the highest rates were here in this region. and it was an indian woman doctor from oklahoma who became an m d, and practiced in the indian house service, who exposed that we went throughout the united states and foreign partnerships with the women in all the cities and universities. and so congress passed an act to prohibit sterilization of native people. we also stepped up because of the adoption of indian children. so the indian char, well, for at past in 1978. these 2 very critical acts came from la quarter country. ah, my mom and my little sister always say that i'm always billions of people on the earth. like we get
