bob redell joins us live outside the stone ridge mall in pleasanton. what are you learning now, bob? >> good morning. well, a few hours ago around 3:00 this morning, pleasanton police arrived at the stone ridge mall behind me in pleasanton. as you can see in this video, the squad cars lit up one of the entrances to the mall. this was the entrance by the men's warehouse if you're not familiar. this is after someone broke the glass on a door that was nearby that entrance. it appears to possibly be an attempted break-in. it's not clear if anyone made it inside the mall. last night, walnut creek police north of here posted on social media a warning about the possibility of another robbery in its shopping district. this was after the nordstrom's there was ransacked saturday night. nordstrom remains closed today. and yesterday. some high-end shops asked customers to leave yesterday so they could close early. yesterday, last night was quiet. on saturday night around 80 people went into that nordstrom department store. it was like a well-organized operation. p

as soon as today, bob redell joins us live at a kaiser facility in pleasanton. how soon can parents expect the vaccine to be available, bob? >> reporter: they could be administering the pfizer vaccine to 5 to 11-year-olds earlier this month, so within a couple weeks one would assume. the cdc must first sign off on the vaccine. later today a cdc advisory panel will meet and listen to various doctor presentations about the use of pfizer vaccinations in children and vote whether or not to approve the dosage for 5 to 11-year-olds. the approval and has started to distribute vaccines. pfizer says the vaccine is 90% effective at preventing symptoms for children in this age group. >> as a pediatrician and a father of five, i have closely followed this with personal interests and professional interests, and i think we really need to trust the science. we have the best scientists in the country who are reviewing the data and reviewing it independently, and if all goes the way we expect it, it will show us that the benefit of vaccination outweighs the risks. >> the califor

reporting live here in antioch, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> all right. thank you. >>> you know, even as younger students receive their first covid vaccination shots some teachers are holding out. in the months ahead that may factor into the decision of whether to extend or drop school mask mandates. bay area's kris sanchez has been following the story and digging deep and where do we stand now, kris? >> as you might remember a bay area school district was among the first in the nation to prioritize teacher vaccinations that was san jose unified, and now across our big districts, the vast majority of our teachers are fully vaccinated. statewide, a bit of a different story. 10% of public school teachers are unvaccinated. amounting to about 32,000 teachers. as of this morning only 5% of san jose unified teachers were not vaccinated. as of october 3% of teachers in san francisco unified had yet to get a shot, 5% in fremont unified, 5 pr% in oakland unified. mandate vary by district. a lot of parents jumped te chance to get their younger school aged children

we've seen patches of fog, but bob redell is out there. first of all, stores are opening -- they were closed last year, but opening much later this year. >> reporter: correct. and, yes, they were closed yesterday. look at stoneridge mall behind me. this is not unusual for black friday because typically on a black friday, they don't open until 6:00 can anyway. that's what they're going to be doing anyway in about an hour. they were not opened yesterday. they reopened at 6:00 this morning. this year like last year is different because of the pandemic. target stores will not reopen until 7:00 this morning for black friday and has announced they will be making -- being closed on thanksgiving permanent. walmart which has stayed open on thanksgiving since the 1980s also closed. same goes for electronics retailer best buy. across the bay area, most malls like stone ridge are closed with the exception of movie theaters. this is a move made last year in the height of the pandemic in an effort to flatten the curve of covid-19 pandemic. now the labor

bob redell breaks it all down. so when can possibly kids start getting vaccinated, bob? >> well, good morning to you, laura and marcus. assuming there's the cdc approval which is expected later today, kaiser permanente, for example, behind me in pleasanton says they could start administering the pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11 years old, kids within a couple of weeks if not sooner. this is assuming there's cdc approval. a live feed from this cdc advisory panel which is comprised of doctors from around the country meeting virtually right now. the doctors were just presented with the results of a trial of more than 2,200 children injected with a two-dose regimen of the third of the dosage of the pfizer vaccine used by teens and adults. that trial found covid-19 vaccine is safe and generates a robust immune response in those young children. and it's about 90% effective at preventing symptoms for children in this age group. later this afternoon the panel is expected to approve the vaccine for 5 to 11-year-old kids. cdc director rochelle walensky expected to sign off after that. >

bob redell joins us live from contra costa. what do they know so far? >> we know contra police are still looking for the suspect in their case. good morning, marcus. pittsburg police announced they've arrested a 24-year-old woman in their abduction case. someone called 911 just after midnight last night when they saw this woman who matched the suspect description walking down the street in harbon street in pittsburg. that's where police were able to take her into custody. yesterday evening a father was adjusting his daughter in the car seat in the back of the suv, talking to a friend. this suspect walked up to them, asked for a cigarette, walked off and then jumped in the driver's seat and put the suv in gear and sped off. someone spotted the stolen suv a couple hours later about a mile away after police issued an amber alert. >> they were blocking the driveway and it was just sitting here and it was weird because they heard a baby scream, crying, screaming and crying and then they looked in there, flashed the lights. the baby was in there, the door ope

today in the bay's bob redell is at chp headquarters in dublin. you can't bring this boy back, but looking forward what do people want to see? >> good morning, kris. some community leaders want a greater chp presence on our local highways to try and detour what happened over the weekend. i want to direct you to your tv screen. this is jasper wu from fremont. he was just weeks from his second birthday. this past saturday afternoon, his mother was driving0 and thi near fillburt and oakland, and a stray bullet from the northbound side of the freeway struck him and killed him. his mom was the driver. sadly, jasper's father who is in china never has been able to meet his son because of covid restrictions. he's on his way back to the bay area for his son's funeral. the oakland china town chamber of commerce is calling for the chp to increase its patrol on our local freeways. >> in this case, you know, i think we need to spend also additional resources on the freeway, because we see so many people shooting on the freeway, and many, many potential innocen

nbc bay area's bob redell is live outside one of those sites in concord. bob, what has the demand been like there this morning? >> good morning. we heard from contra costa health services in the past hour. demand has been high. they've got about 400 appointments today for kids ages 5 to 11 at their three county-run clinics. antioch, richmond and in concord. and they say they have the same level of demand in terms of appointments for tomorrow as well. we saw a number of moms and dads bringing their young sons and daughters in for their first rounds of shots here at the concord clinic. this was this morning before the start of school. these parents tell us it's important they get this done on day one. >> it's been hard protecting them without -- with just using masks. now we have the vaccine which we know protects them even more. >> just to make sure that if something were to happen, she were to be exposed she wouldn't have to quarantine the same way. missing ten days of school is not easy. >> i'm excited because then my mom says that i can go to chuck e. ch

bob redell is live from the concord police department this morning. so interesting. two separate cases, not related? >> reporter: good morning, laura. two incidents, one child abducted in pittsburg yesterday, and the other in concord. restaurant on clayton road.p the was recovered not too far away from where he was abducted. the family went into the wing stop restaurant and left their child in the van and that's when somebody stole the van, and then the police found the van 20 minutes later with the child inside and nobody has been arrested. in pittsburg, a child's father was adjusting a car seat and talking with a friend, and then a woman jumped in the driver's seat and sped off. somebody spotted the stolen suv a couple hours later about a mile away after police issued an amber alert. >> they were blocking the drive weigh and it was just sitting here, and they say it was heard because they heard a baby scream, screaming and crying, and the baby was in there and the door was open so they got the baby out. >> family members and police officers took the toddler to the

. >> bob redell joins us from pleasanton. there was a drop in online sales as well? >> correct. good morning, laura and scott. compared to last year, this was the first time that online sales on a black friday have dipped from the year compared to the year prior. this is according to adobe analytics. shoppers spent $8.9 billion online this past black friday. that's $100 million less than what they spent last year. adobe suggests this dip in online spending might have been caused by an up tick in early spending as some stores started their sales and promotions as early as october. global supply chain issues could have been another contributor. adobe analytics is predicting that on cyber monday, shoppers will spend between 10.2 to $11.3 billion. which could be more or less than a $10.8 billion spent last year. when it comes to foot traffic this past friday, brick and mortor retailer saws an increase of almost 48% compared to last year. but compared to where we were prepandemic, now talking about in 2019, still down roughly 28%. an analyst for sensormatic. an analyst believes shopp

bob redell joining us live from outside a kaiser facility in redwood city. what kind of impact could this have on patients? >> reporter: kaiser says their emergency rooms could have longer wait times. optical services are shut down today. lab and radiology departments could be closed or under reduced hours. outpatient pharmacies could be closed today and tomorrow. and some elective surgeries and non-urgent appointments could be cancelled. this, again, because of a one-day sympathy strike taking place at 7:00 at this kaiser hoe case behind me in redwood city and 20 other kaiser lo the bay area and central valley. it's to show sympathy with kaiser engineers who have been on strike over pay and alleged unfair labor practices. the strike comes despite the fact that kaiser recently came to tentative agreements with health care workers and pharmacists who also threatened a strike. with regards to the engineers, the union for health care workers striking this morning says kaiser can afford to pay more given the billions in profits and dozens of executives with mill
