it is time now for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." hi, chuck. good to see you this morning. thanks for joining us. i want to obviously talk about president biden's massive social spending plan which passed the house on friday. democrats celebrating, of course. but before i ask you what happens next, can you enumerate whathat you know is going to be in it no matter what. there's a child tax credit that's going to be an attempt to make it more permanent. it will will be paid for, for at least anywhere from two to five years, and they assume it gets renewed. there will be an attempt to start some form of universal pre-k. that's likely to make it in no matter which side of the bill. then there are things in there we won't necessarily know will will make the final bill. they added an extra tax break to state and local taxes. some democrats are a little uncomfortable that the second biggest cost in this bill is going to be the cost of that tax break to folks in blue states in particular who got hit hard by seeing that tax

i'm chuck todd. president biden is on his way to new hampshire, the farthest away he's travel in the some time as he kicks off an administration effort to tout the $1.2 billion infrastructure bill. i should say the farthest he's traveled domestically. for the white house, whether they want an acknowledge it or not, the big achievement and celebration comes with a big reality check -- they still have a ton of problems, statering with covid. health officials are bracing for what, loose like another winter surge in hospitalizations. all the numbers moving in the wrong direction. the rate of infection spiked 17% in just the last week. we warned about this a week ago, and sadly it has only gotten worse. there's also the three-headed economic monster. rising prices have effectively wiped out a year of wage gains for everyday workers. then there's the biden agenda, where the build back better pitch has run into major problems, in part because moderate democrats are worried about the current environment and

i'm chuck todd. it's getting colder. colorado is battling a mysterious surge in cases. vaccine misinformation is back in the headlines thanks to aaron rogers and overall experts say the conditions are ripe for a surge in the northern hemisphere. folks, the last thing we want to hear but trust me, you got to pay attention to the numbers. it leads to this question, are we on the cusp of another hospitalizations here in the united states? we don't know and don't have that covid pill in this country yet. what we know for sure is infection rates across the country stopped declideclining. we hit a plateau that sits between 75 and 75,000 new cases every day and now it's starting to climb. we had flat lined around 71,000 for about a week. now it's inching back up and in fact, infection rates have gone up 5% in the last two weeks. 1200 americans are dying every day and models suggestion a death toll exceeding 1 million by the spring that's 250,000 additional deaths over the next few months. meanwhile, the whole aaron rogers saga thrust the issue back into the spotlight. he's a w

if the numbers are so bad that even one of msdnc's top democrats, chuck todd, he's trying to sound the alarm. listen. >> good sunday morning, happy halloween. we have a brand-new nbc news poll out this morning that is filled with some scary news for the democrats. the overarching message, americans of lost their confidence in president biden and their optimism for the country. at least they have right now. just 22% of adults say we are headed in the right direction. a shocking 71% say we are on the wrong track that includes a near majority of democrats. republicans, believe it or not, have double-digit leads in dealing with border security, inflation, crime, national security, the economy, and, shockingly, on getting things done. >> sean: even more shocking, 22% of americans think the country is going in the right direction. what direction is right? there's no plan whatsoever to fix any of the biden administration's self-inflicted crises. for example, the administration seemingly, you know, the only plan to fix the supply chain is just called fedex? we get lectured again to call fedex?

chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." chuck, good morning, it's great to see you. let's start right there with the january 6 committee. steve bannon indicted by the justice department on two counts. a lot of people were watching what justice was going to do here and whether these subpoenas from the committee would have teeth. so what does the indictment of bannon tell you about where this investigation and where this committee is headed? >> well, there's two ways to look at it. on one hand, yes, they're getting backup here and gives their subpoenas teeth. perhaps this will get others to cooperate. maybe they won't want to stick with this defiance that bannon is comfortable with. but that's a problem here that i think the committee has to face. here are the facts, willie. if steve bannon is convicted and serves whatever time he's convicted to serve, that doesn't mean he has to testify. he can -- if he chooses to go through this and is -- even if he is successfully convicted, he does not have to be forced to testify. and th
