i left iowa in the mid-80's. i still love things and watch things all iowa. when i saw the pulitzers in the spring of 2017, the headline read that a small iowa newspaper was close to folding. i read about art's story and i called him up and i went to film with him in full of 2017 -- the fall of 2017. >> how long did you work on the project? >> from the fall of 2017 to this year, almost 3.5 years. principal photography was mainly from the spring of 2019 to the election of 2020. susan: beth, the university of north carolina has been tracking the state of small newspapers around the country. they have suggested there has been a net loss of nearly 2200 newspapers in the country since 2004. in general, what are the challenges they are facing? is the timeline any different across the country? beth: when jerry and i first started making this film, we were not experts in the subject material but we learned so much in the process and learned of the things we have learned. we learned that newspapers across the country are facing in existential crisis. they are facing t
