i left iowa in the mid-80's. i still love things and watch things all iowa. when i saw the pulitzers in the spring of 2017, the headline read that a small iowa newspaper was close to folding. i read about art's story and i called him up and i went to film with him in full of 2017 -- the fall of 2017. >> how long did you work on the project? >> from the fall of 2017 to this year, almost 3.5 years. principal photography was mainly from the spring of 2019 to the election of 2020. susan: beth, the university of north carolina has been tracking the state of small newspapers around the country. they have suggested there has been a net loss of nearly 2200 newspapers in the country since 2004. in general, what are the challenges they are facing? is the timeline any different across the country? beth: when jerry and i first started making this film, we were not experts in the subject material but we learned so much in the process and learned of the things we have learned. we learned that newspapers across the country are facing in existential crisis. they are facing t

what's it like in iowa right now? >> well, first of all, john deere workers are on strike right now, and they're the largest manufacturer in iowa, which is a manufacturing state, believe it or not. the second biggest part of our economy is agriculture and agriculture is doing pretty well this year following that phony trade war that trump waged with china. and now china has been buying a lot of corn and soybeans and pork, and so that's buoying the iowa economy. but those same factors are at play, labor market participation is down farther in rural areas and not recovering as quickly as urban areas. there's a lot of anxiety in rural iowa about home heating prices this winter up 50%. and of course gasoline prices over $3. and we all know that corn eventually is going to settle back down near $4 once chinese demand catches up. >> michael, people who live paycheck to paycheck do not have extra money lying around. right now families of 60 million children are getting on average $430 a month from that expanded child tax cre

eric: one member of the iowa delegation and chuck grassley and another senator of your state voted in the senate in august, what would you tell senator grassley? >> i heard from my district and i have to do what i believe is right for my district and as a member of the budget appropriations committee, michael is to make sure ripping as targeted and respectful to taxpayers and michael was to make sure we get to a package that does that. i think this maybe was not the right one, when i was hearing from voters in my district, the message was loud and clear, make sure we are being judicious. eric: you are in the right place, the kitchen table issue, what are people telling you you're sitting in the kitchen, what does the family talk about? >> gas prices are top of mind for islands right now and price of goods and services. you look how much money it cost to go grocery shopping right now, inflation is very real. no cross markle meet cost more and harmful policies, energy policies out of the ministration it gets pretty cold here in iowa in middle february, 22 below zero and we talk about en

first off, there's a really new interesting poll today out of iowa. iowa republicans being polled by the des moines register, and they're amongst the most conservative republicans in america. they ask where's your loyalty the most to republican party or to donald trump. 62% said the republican party. 26% said donald trump, in iowa. so i think things are changing, trevor. i think as he's no longer on the twitter -- he's only been out of office less than ten months and he dominated the political oxygen in this country for five years. so we're an instant gratification society. people expect things to happen like that but they don't sometimes. as the emotion drains out and you leave the fact, i think people are going to say a republican party that's built on many foundations is much more valuable than one that's built on one. and by the way, the former president can be part of that. if he wants to start talking about tomorrow and stop talking about yesterday. that the what we should be thinking about is how do we get to the forecast step. and i think that
