>> yeah, jim. i took a peek inside one of the department stores on fifth avenue, new york, there's no shortage of watchful eyes, not only monitoring the crowds, but also on the merchandise as well. that is certainly a concern. it is certainly not stopping people from heading out and making their purchases, not just here in new york city, but throughout the country. when you look at the numbers from some of those retail experts and the forecasts that they have issued that is indicating that by the time this weekend, alone, wrapping up, they're expecting about 150 million americans to make some holiday purchases. more than half of them are expected to make those purchases in person. one of the many reasons is because of those lingering concerns about supply shortages, about the inventory shortages at some of these stores here. you get a sense that a lot of americans are hoping to go out to those retailers and purchase those items themselves. we heard from the national retail federation which is this

here's why, jim. first, this variant does not appear to be causing worse san diego than anything we have seen before. this is not the andromeda strain. it's not like the mortality goes up even further with this variant. the second point is, yes, there's a lot of mutations in the spike protein, including the receptor binding domain, but in the past those kind of vaccine escape variants have not really translated into major global path os gens. we have seen this before, but with the beta variant, with the lambda variant, those never really took off. so there's nothing intrinsic in the spike protein that would account for global spread. the two worst ones, the alpha, that arose out of theuu uk, and the delta variant that rose out of an unvaccinated population in india, was because of amino acid substitution that caused it to be a much more highly transm transmissible. so the most important question for this weekend and next few days, next week is -- is this variant more transmissible than delta? does it

good morning, jim. >> so your overall rate of having one shot, 86%, is a pretty good figure. others have requested exemptions and are waiting for cases to be considered. i suppose my question is what happens to the others and is time running out for them to comply? >> so 86% is what we hit yesterday. that's the most recent number. we do have about 6,000 uniform and civilian members that have requested accommodations. that's the next level, jim. as those are pored over, our office of employment discrimination with attorneys reviewing each case individually, and they will be either pushed into, yes, the accommodation stands or it's denied and there's an appeals process. i anticipate this is going to take some time to play out. >> okay. >> while that is all happening, those individual members are subject to testing. so the most recent number is we have about 130 uniformed members that are out without pay. obviously, we'd love to have each one back. >> so have those numbers, as those cases are being conside

i'm jim acosta in washington. we begin with major breaking news as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. world leaders at the u.n. climate summit have just reached an agreement. this comes after a marathon of intense negotiations lasting after the summit ended. i want to go straight to cnn's phil black in scotland to bring us up to speed on just about what we know right now about this agreement. phil, this sounds like a major development. what can you tell us? >> reporter: jim, it was a hard-fought fiercely contested agreement that ultimately at best represents incremental progress and ultimately falls short of what everyone would have ideally liked. but remember, this is a consensus process with almost 200 countries in the room pursuing their own national interests while supposedly trying to make progress on climate change. there is some key language here that's really important, and it's why countries including the united states wanted to support this agreement even though they believe it is not perfect.

let's get former jim and steve weiss, back together again, old friends. jim, you own salesforce. steve weiss, you wouldn't buy salesforce jim, you go first. why is it a buy today? >> why would steve change his habits and start buying good stocks this is a stock that is a little bit different than what i normally buy because the valuation. i will start there but i bought this earlier this year, the stock had swooned, and this was when marc benioff, the ceo, came in and acquired slack or announced the acquisition i looked at that move and said, okay, i like this, i like this a lot. he already has a business in customer relationship management that is almost cultish is how his customers deal about it. now he is pivoting to a new growth segment it is the right place to be. i expect more moves like that from marc benioff. this stock is up 30% since i bought it earlier this year so no complaints. it may come down at some point, particularly as rates go up. i will use that as an excuse to add to the stock so this is going to be a long-term hold for me. >> okay. steve weiss, why no touch

i'm jim acosta in washington. and we begin in texas where a deadly concert tragedy is now a criminal investigation. fans who were at the astroworld music festival in houston tell cnn this was not a concert, this was a fight for survival. eight people were killed and dozens injured after many in the crowd rushed the stage. but police are also looking into reports that someone with a needle was injecting someone with unsuspecting people with drugs including a security guard who was pricked in the neck and needed to be revived by narcan. the chaos started before the concert even began according to the video. some people were trampling one another and pushing past security just to get into the venue. you can see people right there on the video falling to the ground. this was before it even ended with those tragic consequences. i want to get to cnn's rosa flores who was in houston for us with the latest. rosa, what else are we learning? >> reporter: well, the latest on the investigation is that police say that they wer
