maria: yeah. that's very good. so let's talk about the issues at hand, thomas. of course, inflation is front and center. here we are, thanksgiving week. it's going to be a much more expensive thanksgiving, 30% higher in some cases. the president is also focused on oil, reportedly set to announce that he will in fact tap into our oil reserves, given the surge in gasoline prices. what should be the right path from a federal reserve perspective to battle the inflationary numbers? >> i think the fed has to begin to recognize the fact that this is more than transitory. there are transitory elements of course in terms of the logistics but there's much more than that in terms of a long history of monetary policy that's been very accomodative, long history of asset prices, not just bubbles but asset prices generally rising. that's inflation in one sense. the fed has to begin to look at that. and then i think where the fed is really going to be challenged is with the amount of new spending that's occurred
