. >>> let's go to michelle grossman for a look at the weather. what's it like? >> wintry weather on the northern plains and severe weather on the southern or warmer part of the front. let's take a look at where this is located. you can see it right in the middle of the country. it's going to take a long track over the next 24 hours. rain chances in the upper midwest and northern plains. you could see up to 9 inches in some spots. strong storms in the tennessee valley. rain and wind in the southeast as well and then the northeast. you're in for it on your morning commute. it's going to be slower. also slow travel from d.c. to boston with that heavy rain, but then it's out of here by the afternoon. new england gets in on the action later on friday. and then it becomes about a cold weather story once the front moves through. so your snow forecast in the northern plains, we're looking up to 9 inches in some spots. rain forecast, nebraska from a half inch to an inch in some spots with the slow morning commute. peak winds gusting near 65 miles per hour in some spots,

let's go to meteorologist michelle grossman. good morning. >> first of all, congrats on becoming officially official. such a good add to the show. i just wanted to say that first. secondly, let's talk about the freeze warnings out there, we poke out with temperatures in the 40s in new york. but we're going to fly to the 50s closer to sunrise. where you see the hot pink, that's the freeze warnings and purple freeze advisories as well. 48 million people impacted by this. look at these temperatures, you need the winter coat, if you haven't brought it out since last year, you need it. temperatures in the 40s in newark, washington, d.c., look at the temperatures in the midwest. below freezing in chicago. 29 degrees in cincinnati, and 33 degrees in evansville. so, this is the setup here. a jet stream so far to the south, it's sort of like a door that opens. lets that cold air in from canada, just spinning in that cold air. that cold air is all the way to dallas, 50 degrees. it's going to stay in place tomorrow. 55 in memphis. five in

msnbc meteorologist michelle grossman has the very latest on that forecast. michelle? >> reporter: hi, guys. so happy to bring you an updated forecast. about a week ago, we saw weather modeling indicating a strong thanksgiving travel storm, but much better. still, we'll see some problems in some spots. let's show you what's happening today, though. we're looking at radar and looking at some snow showers in the upper midwest, looking at rain showers in the ohio valley, even some snow showers too in the northeast, but heavy rain falling in florida today. that will continue throughout the day. so this is what will happen over the next several days. we have a long cold front that's going to sweep through the ohio valley, into the northeast. a low pressure system. that's going to bring a line of showers from new york to louisiana. that will push through tomorrow, as well. so your monday morning commute in new york city along the i-95 corridor from philly to d.c., you're going to see some rain. but that's going to move out of here. and behind it, you'll see some very strong,
