black couples who were dragged from their cars and shot dozens of times by white men.ir the naacp has documented more than 530 acts of lynching in georgia alone between 1882 and 1968. the violence was second only to that of mississippi. the citizen's arrest law helped eskew some of that violence. what a terrible old law. the problem is, that law was still on the books in 2021. this spring, the state of m georgia repealed that law and it only happened because of a tragedy that took place in february of 2020. it was then that three white georgia men chased down a 25-year-old ahmaud arbery while he was jogging through their neighborhood. when he didn't stop, when they n ordered him to, they trapped him with their trucks and shot him dead. they claimed they were attempting a citizen's arrest. they say they assumed arbery was responsible for local thefts they had been hearing about for weeks before seeing arbery jog by. they just assumed it was him. they did not investigate. they did not have evidence. they assumed it was him and assumed they had the right to capture this black man to make

how do you see your role with an organization like the naacp that is connected to this long history. i see this as part of the history that we are living through, how do you see this? >> it's definitely a part of the history we're living through. the reason why the naacp was created, is because on average an african american was lynched every day, was created in 19 oh not. so we need to reform our criminal justice system as well. in terms of the communities that we were present. we need to encourage a heightened engagement particularly when you have judges elected or jury pools that are not as diverse as necessary. the sad part of what we are witnessing right now is, the potential outcome of the ahmaud arbery killing, that those three individuals actually did, we saw that on tape, unfortunately in that community with 25% african american with only one juror, we are faced with a same outcome, we cannot have a justice system that is unjust. we have a legal system that is void of justice for african americans, latinos across the country. in many cases, poor whites as well. >> naacp pres

when look at the archives of the southern christian leadership conference of the naacp mcdonald's is everywhere, right? so i think we often think about certain relationships of power. people would say was there an archive of all of the black franchise owners of the early class? i said no. but if i think critically of the places they donated money to bring the community groups and interacted with them, i could've written 1010 books about mcdonald's and black america. i think it's a cautionary tale about who we think are important makers of history. this is why i'm so excited about the possibility of a graduate student read this book thinking this is the worst book i ever read. i'm going to go back to the same archives and i'm going to write a better version of this. these things are possible but it is political. there have to be programs we study african-american history. there have to be faculty led by hsu to do that. this is not magic it's about changing who and what we think about in the places that train scholars to do that kind of work. >> it's always interesting how you are a jo
