we are waiting for new jersey -- new jersey governor. has to give democrats some consternation about what the heck is going on here? what are we doing wrong? >> well, look, listen. i wish we had a big victory in virginia. i am glad we have a victory in new jersey. actually, by pulling off the victory in new jersey, that cut the tradition of losing new jersey in the governor's race in the first term of a new president which is a tradition going back to george herbert walker bush and every president in between. but look, i don't sugarcoat it. we should have gotten these two big bills done and we didn't. we are going to get them done in the very near future. um, and it's going to be important for us to be able to make the case to the american people that we're addressing their economic needs. that we're helping them right where they live in very concrete terms. that's what this -- these bills do. but they're not done, yet. and -- and we need to get it across the finish line. >> why should voters believe that you can protect democracy and sh

i know we talked earlier about the state of new jersey and people who know new jersey, i've been in the garden state a lot, it's a little bit more purple than people give it credit for. how surprised are you at the opponent delma component of jack ciattarelli tonight? >> i don't think anybody was covering this very seriously because it was the assumption that it was going to stay so blue. one of the things illustrated, two things, the president of the united states and kamala harris are very weak. they are weak communicators, they are weak physically, i do not think they carry many coat tails because they certainly were trying to win these races by big margins and their coattails prove nothing. the other sleeper issue i think will come out in the days to come is how well republicans did with the hispanic vote. you see that play out in texas, and my guess is places like new jersey and others, republicans did exceptionally well with the hispanic vote. >> one of the things i like having you on the show, leslie, while you obviously support your side, your team, i think he really play right

york city in new jersey. and they have a lot in common that are sort of a telltale sign. >> dana, as you guys know, the battle in american politics, like in electoral politics, has been the battle over america's suburbs. that's the period of america's politics we're in. and that's sort of the swing areas that we look at and a lot of critical contests. that is what new jersey and virginia have in common. they are big suburban states. there are lots and lots of suburban vote in these states. and what we saw in virginia in the exit polls tonight is that youngkin won the suburbs, by the way, we say 60% of the vote was from the suburbs. it's categorized, but by six points. just a year ago, also they made up 60% of the vote. joe biden won the suburbs by eight points. that is a 14-point swing in the opposite direction! that's the story of what we're seeing tonight in these two states. >> this is also a story about race, right? we talk about the suburbs, about 70% white. if you see a lot of these vote who have switch

senator bernie sanders from vermont and new jersey senator bob menendez announced a proposal for state and local tax deductions as a part of president biden's social spending proposal. this is about 15 minutes. at a time of massive wealth income inequality when the rich are becoming richer and working class are struggling, the job of congress it seems to me for the working families and to make certain that the wealthiest people in the country began to start paying their fair share of taxes. unfortunately, in 2017, the trump tax plan which was supported by every republican moved on in exactly the wrong direction. the vast majority in that proposal went to the wealthiest people in the country and the largest corporations. the people that needed the least resulted in a 2 trillion-dollar increase in our national debt. one of the many negative aspects of the tax plan was to limit deductions on state and local taxes to $10,000. that resulted in millions of middle-class and working-class families being forced to pay more in their federal taxation. that was a regressive and unfair proposal and

this is camden, new jersey. murphy is going to win back the county, but we expect 15%-16% of the votes outstanding in two-thirds of that we think was cast today -- or on election day last night. it's been a long night as i'm sure you can tell. we find new work which is a short drive from new york city. we've been saying for hours that 25% of the vote is outstanding and sx and yet to be counted. why is that question rick we can say and we don't know. is there an issue? not confirmed. it goes back to the calculator question. we need to spend a few their way we have summit and western new jersey here. we think 12% outstanding in union county as well. to summarize, those three places are blue counties and in all likelihood, up to 60% or more of that couldn't go for it murphy over ciattarelli which would be good news for the democrat. we can't conclude that just yet, it is based on some of the projections. up here in the north and passaic county new jersey, a couple of votes are coming in. this is interesting i'll te

there is no automatic recount in new jersey. no matter how close this may be probably the best people in that state depending how it turns out who could get a recount i think this is interesting are the citizens. private citizens in new jersey are allowed to apply for a recount in groups of at least 10 if they have reason to believe there is an error that has been made in counting the votes upon any public question of any election. they actually have more power than the person who ran who would lose no matter how close this is. that is really interesting. phil murphy up by 20 points just a couple of months. >> yeah. he won the state four years ago by 14 points. joe biden won this state where you and i live by 16 points. this was a political earthquake last night here in new jersey. even if jack ciattarelli doesn't win but loses by less than a point think of all the people that biden or murphy has lost at this point in a county we're familiar with, it went easily for phil murphy two years ago. a lot of those groups will call for

lee, new jersey. as we are looking at where we stand, those numbers ticking up in phil murphy's favor, are we hearing from either camps or are they waiting for this to play out? >> yeah, they're really waiting for this to finish out. they're still not a lot of republican votes out there. both campaigns are well aware. the race is still at this point too close to call. when you look at the lay of the happened here, especially in places like where i am in berman county, i know you heard this before, but this is one of these spots where if you look at democrats, they're really and how much murphy is really under performing here, especially when you consider how he did last time. lasted time during the gubernatorial race, he won this county by 15 points. this time around, he's only ahead by four points or so and already 86% is already reporting here. when you look at the campaign that ciciarretti has won, it's because of how he really went after murphy on several key points, basically going after him on m

in new jersey. this is obviously a blue state. this was decisively for biden. 16 points last year. new jersey in a presidential race hasn't gone republican since back in 1988. but more recently, there is a republican who won a governor's race, won two governor's races in new jersey. that was chris christie. chris christie got himself elected a little bit more than a decade ago, in 2009. re-elected in 2013. if ciattarelli is going to pull off a surprise tonight, a couple of places we're going look on this map when the votes start coming in. the first thing to keep in mind here is some big, high proposition, very democratic areas. essex county right where newark is. hudson county, across the hudson river from new york city. these two counties right here are big, big-time vote producers for democrats. so one of the reasons republicans start in a hole, essex, camden county down south. we'll take a look tonight. bergen county. this is the biggest county in the state, nearly a million people. suburbs of n

nbc news projects that democrats will hold on in new jersey but according to david wasserman, if republicans replicate nationally in races, the on-the-ground success in both new jersey and virginia they would wipe out as many as 40 democratic seats next year and as many as the mid-50s. where democrats go here we will try and tackle it later this hour as the party faces challenging with messaging and tactics and democrats to name a few. and we'll go to where the party goes now. joining us kristen welker and our capitol hill correspondent ali vitali. kristen, let me start with you. let's focus on the acceleration of trying to get something passed. what role is the white house playing? or are they basically right now, waiting to see what pelosi can pull off? >> reporter: well, i think that the president is trying to twist the arms behind the scenes while letting house speaker nancy pelosi take the lead on this, chuck, he's here at the white house, he has no events on the public schedule at this point in time that we're aware of. no plans to either go to capitol hill or have lawmakers come here.
