phil murphy will be since brendan burn. i want to bring in now, mj lee and our senior legal analyst, political analyst, ron brownstein as well. so, mj, you know, i interrupted you because he was coming up onstage. but again, this was to be expected last night. he thought he would do it earlier in the evening. he had to come out and say, look, not a concession speech. every vote needs to be counted but we are expecting to win, and here we are one night later. but yet, still, a win is a win. >> reporter: yeah, you know, this was a victory speech not just about the fact that he ultimately ended up winning but it was a victory speech that really touched on all of his accomplishments that he sees as being important to his victory. the work that he has done in the state of new jersey on paid family leave, for example. on raising the minimum wage. related to the affordable care act. creating clean energy jobs. he clearly wanted to use this moment to say, look, here is everything that i have worked hard on over the last four years.

numbered phil murphy is holding a strong lead. john berman is standing by with an update on those votes, where they're still being counted. where do we is thatened? >> so phil murphy's lead just shrunk ever so slightly. he is ahead. so new votes reported from a county where jack ciarretti leads. let me still e tell you exactly how many votes are there. jack ciarrelli clocked in with 4,251 new votes. phil murphy 2,1 naw. that's about 52% and about 47%. so you can see that was able to shrink the lead ever so slightly. the story overall in new jersey, though, so people now, is a little different. if you look, there is 85% of the vote counted so far. where is the remaining vote? largely, we think, in areas that are still leaning democratic. places like hudson county, where jersey city is, 80% so far, phil murphy is way up. he pointed essex county. big urban center. 72% reporting. phil murphy has a big lead there. joe biden won new jersey. substantially by 16 points. i want to show people where this margin has shrunk, you can see jack

you see here phil murphy has 72.9% of the vote. and other democratic county, you know, philadelphia, the surrounding areas of philadelphia, camden, this is an area where phil murphy is at 60%. just 78%, so a lot more potential democratic votes. if you want to know the republican counties that still have some votes to count, somerset, not tiny, a lot of votes there, jack ciattarelli, small edge there, 82% in. in the south, cumberland county, not many votes there, ciattarelli there. if you get a sense of what could happen as the votes keep coming in as the-- i'm sorry, the wal being mean to me, phil murphy at 73%. jack ciattarelli at 25%. we just got a batch of counted votes there. and that vote count was about 6,000 new votes counted there. of the 6,000, phil murphy got 3,889. ciattarelli, 2,157. that is about 63% of the vote. and about 35% of the vote. so you can see as these new numbers come in, from these largely democratic counties, phil murphy should be able to stretch his lead out, which is why the democrats feel better about

but if you are phil murphy or taray mcauliffe. one thing you are saying and mutters to yourself as you watch, both campaign aed with joe biden. terry mcauliffe made clear his displeasure with the state of play in washington. i'm guessing phil murphy is watching this come in tonight and thinking how much of this is me , and how much of this is out of my control? >> yeah. y i mean, i think they would have love today bipartisan infrastructure bill, some tangible result. we happen to have the good fortune of two children of the guarden state. two new jersey residents on the panel this evening. as a philadelphian, i would take umbrage, are you surprised rg, first of all, what part of new jersey are you from? >> monmouth county, central new jersey. >> are you surprised by what you are seeing? >> yes, obviously it's surprising. againe er again, you went through the math. it's not that long ago in the history of the states after barack obama had the big win in 2008, chris christie in 2009 in new jersey, made their mark. but, what you are

phil murphy has 76%. as it gets closer to 100%, the murphy campaign thinks the governor will get a lot of votes. essex county where newark is, 72% reporting. fill murphy, 712% 2% of the vot. as you look at this map, you will see there is one republican county still with less than 80% of the vote. that is cumberland county with 79% counted. but you can see the vote totals aren't that high. so democrats think there is much more opportunity for phil murphy to grow over the next few hours. all right. let's look at virginia and see where the votes were in new jersey. there was a lot of talk about the suburbs. rightfully so. look at the suburban counties. loudon county, washington, d.c. suburbs, terry mcauliffe leading glenn youngkin by 11 points. it might seem like a lot, but i want to pair it to the presidential race one year ago. you can see it was a 25-point margin from joe biden. you can see glenn youngkin was able to shrink that margin. but the story isn't just in the suburbs. what do i mean? i want to co

but ciattarelli and that face against phil murphy in new jersey was a sleeper. if you look at the numbers in new jersey, there are a million more registered democrats than a republicans in new jersey, it's been a reliably blue state especially in off elections for

it's phil murphy. it's the democrats. so it's not just that the vote that's out, the counties that are out, are democratic counties. it's also the types of votes that are out in those counties, and right now, i believe there is still a lot of vote by mail out. so if -- you know, look. we don't know who is won this race but if it's dead even right now, i would clearly be putting my finger on the scale for phil murphy. >> and that's why phil murphy is so confident, seemed appeared to be happy. speaking saying every vote should be counted. >> right. exactly. and we have seen that -- remember, phil murphy was down three or four points earlier-this evening. as more of the vote's been counted, he has sliced that. now, we are basically dead even and i expect phil murphy will eventually pull ahead. >>> let's go to virginia. which is -- i don't know if we can call it an upset because you have been saying over the past couple -- at least the past month -- that this is all moving in the direction of -- of youngkin. but in virginia,

phil murphy ahead by 35,000 votes. in the counties that still have substantial vote left to count, phil murphy is winning by a lot. i'm talking about hudson county where jersey city is. he has 73% of the vote there. 81% in there. he should be able to stretch his lead there. and essex, again, phil murphy 73%. just 84% counted at this point. so murphy should be able to stretch out as the county continues. a bigger question for democrats at this point is, yeah, winning is good but it was nerve-racking, much more nerve-racking than they were hoping. i pointed out phil murphy ahead by 35,000 votes at this point. what did joe biden do in 2020, just one year ago? he won by 700,000 votes. there's a big difference between 725,000 and 35,000, brianna. i want to show you also if i can the counties that joe biden won and the difference with phil murphy. here are the counties that biden won that murphy did not. you're seeing morris county there. jack chiattarelli won it by 14, biden won by 4. that's a 14-point swing. chiattarelli w

phil murphy ran a progressive campaign. new york city mayor, remember, this was back in julian assange. the progressives lost that primary and then, of course, virginia a projected loss to the democrats. so i think there's going to be a lot of reflecting upon what happened last night, what's happened in the last few months. i think that there are a lot of voters who said, you know what, we want to pump the brakes on the democrats and progressives. let's take another look. we want more people moving towards the center of the aisle. >> harry, you're about to go to sleep. anything else before you go night-night? >> yes, i am about to go night-night. i have been awake 21 hours. look, the fact of the matter is the real only question left is new jersey. we pointed out the beginning of the segment. a far closer call for phil murphy than anyone thought it was going to be. it's pretty clear across the board in these races and something i didn't even mention, on long island, you see a bunch of democrats losing. this is not just one p

the margin that jack ciattarelli leads phil murphy by in ocean county, he's now leading phil murphy in ocean county by a margin the same size that chris christie racked up in ocean county when chris christie won statewide in new jersey, tough for a republican to do, when christie did it ocean county was a big part of the equation. ciattarelli's performance in ocean county tonight looks like chris christie's performance when chris christie won the state of new jersey. so there are places here on the map where ciattarelli can be very happy right now, but there are some very big pieces of the puzzle statewide in new jersey where we're just missing critical information because he's got to do everything i just showed you in a place like ocean, a place like hunterdon. he's got to pitch jack ciattarelli to win new jersey, he's basically got to pitch a perfect game. he's got to make significant inroads everywhere on this map. so we've got to see burlington, burlington, essex. let's see if we get some more vote in essex pretty soon here tonight. but that's what we're waiting on here in new jers

right now he stands at 5700 ahead of phil murphy. that is what separates these two men, joe manchin won by two points a year ago. but in virginia, republican businessman glenn youngkin is now the governor-elect after defeating former governor terry mcauliffe. youngkin's playbook are one republicans are hoping to replicate. across the country, voters offered mix messages of what directions they want their cities to take. but history was also made. let's start with that still undecided race in new jersey this hour, cnn's john berman. he has the very latest. he is joining me now. thank you for sticking around to do this. i appreciate it. where are things right now in new jersey? >> already. 7100 votes, that's what separates the democratic incumbent phil murphy from jack citterelli. where is most of the remaining vote? well, we think largely from the blue counties. let's take a look, if we can, at the counties that have 85% or less reported at this point. you can see almost all of them are blue. in some cases very, very blue. take hudson

phil murphy in his favor had a lot of margins to work with. it does seem, brianna, like he needed it. >> we off see these swings. but democrats have to figure out how to confront this. they are struggling to. thank you for taking us into the state there. cnn has new reporting on the democrats and their struggle to find a message on the culture war that is surrounding critical race theory. and this is coming as the party comes to grips with their loss in virginia. cnn's melanie zanona is joining us now. you hear from democrats and they say looking within, we're not doing a good job with this. . >> yeah. there's actually a meeting last night at the headquarters where frontline members in this vulnerable districts were presented research how to handle the gop's attacks on critical race theory. there was actually a disagreement between two members. you had lauren underwood in one camp. she stood up and said we need to counter the gop's misinformation head-on. and talking about what critical race theory is and isn't. it is primarily taught at unive

phil murphy has 465,452 votes. 49.7% of the vote. only 2,6 8 votes ahead of republican jack ciattarelli with 4 462,764 votes. 33% of the vote in. anything could happen. quite a nail biter. we're following a number of other interesting races. an unusual mayor's race putting a social list against the incouple went she defeated in the primary. he is now running as a write-in candidate. look at the board. the write-in candidate has 10,243 votes at 65.4% of the vote, leading with 4,830 votes india walton, the democratic nominee, the socialist, 5,413 votes, 34.6% in the vote. that is write-in candidate leading. most of those write-in votes will be for the incumbent mayor byron brown. after losing the primary, he decided he was going to wage an aggressive write-in campaign hoping for the support of more moderate democrats and republicans who oppose walton's socialist views. so we're keeping an eye on that one. let's turn to minneapolis. voters are deciding to replace the police department with what's called a department of public safety. th

murphy, phil murphy now leads in the bergen county vote count, what that's done is it's brought the statewide tally, much closer, ciattarelli the republican, now leading by less than 5000 votes. murphy getting a big bounce out of bergen county. okay, what else is left right now. we keep talking about sussex county, here is a another one. the county clerk in sussex county, has put some numbers up on their site, we just want to nail down and make sure it's accurate. the vote the totals up on their, site gives ciattarelli a lead in suffix county with basically all the vote counted, of about 20,000 votes. ciattarelli may be able to put 20,000 right back on the board here. again we're just going to try to confirm what they put up on their website there. in sussex county, the clerks office there. that could be a 20,000 vote gain for ciattarelli if that information is correct. what else are we looking at here. we think mercer county, this is one that phil murphy is going to put a lot of faith and i think rain. now mercer county where trump and, is the state, capital you see this is a big d

you see phil murphy there. when you do the drill down between the two of them it is still 7,195 votes apart for these men. 99% of the precincts were in a moment ago. i don't know if that's the latest board. it said 99. regardless you've heard me mention about a recount. when it gets quite this close you will see a situation where people will look to see will they bring in lawyers and those conversations happen. they don't happen automatically in new jersey by any sort of rule or law. there is no automatic recount legislation in our state. i live in jersey. what that means is either one of the candidates, no matter what the percentages, can press for a recount and so can private citizens based on whatever they would see as something not fair. just wanted to let you know we're watching to see if they call this race and when it happens we'll bring it to you live. now let's dig in a little bit deeper with some of the issues that were behind glenn youngkin's stunning victory in virginia. the big ones were the econom

you see phil murphy's margin again. let's look at the counties that joe biden won that phil murphy didn't. there are four counties. you see them here in red, biden won, phil murphy lost. let's look at the vote swings there. you see jack ciattarelli the republican winning morris county by 14 points. that's pretty healthy. joe biden won it by 4 points. that's a 16-point flip. let's look at another one. in the south, blue collar areas of new jersey, big swings. this is atlantic county, jack ciattarelli won that by 12 points. joe biden won it by 6. an 18-point swing there in the blue collar. now, republican counties, i want to look at one of the could counties that phil murphy did win, bergen county, outside new york city, you can see joe -- phil murphy's margin is five points, won it by five points. but president biden won it by 16 points. even the more democratic counties pretty big swings there. so, yes, a win is a win for phil murphy. he will be governor for four more years. but you can see how there have been big chang

nbc news has just called the new jersey governor's race for democrat phil murphy. democrat phil murphy has been re-elected to a second term in new jersey, defeating his republican challenger jack ciattarelli. we'll be talking with the great steve kornacki shortly about why it took so long to call this race, how close it ended up being in the end. but it looks like the democratic party did lose the governor's race in virginia but not the one in new jersey, which breaks pattern in a way that is favorable toward the democrats. and, honestly, the headlines today were like, how the democrats were destroyed. if the democrats aren't panicking now, they sure ought to be. honestly, there is one thing that they ought to maybe panic about, which is that the polling was terrible again, both in virginia and in new jersey, the public polling for a lot of the race seems to have been pretty much off like it has been for a couple of cycles now. if they don't figure out a way to fix that, their campaigns aren't going to be calibrated right in any elections in the future. so they can
