that was a race ralph northam became the governor. and i want to look at areas where terry mcauliffe underperformed ralph northam by more than five points. and look at this. it's not the suburban areas. terry mcauliffe basic live did about as well as ralph northam did four years ago in the suburban areas. where terry mcauliffe had a real problem was in the republican rural counties. how can that be? they are predominantly republican already. take a look at smith county. terry mcauliffe got just 17% of the vote. 16.9%. you are getting ever closer to zero if you're a democrat right there. if you want to compare it to what ralph northam did, i got 22%. not great but more than 17%. if you pop around the state and rural areas, county to count, look there. fray son county, glenn youngkin got 82%. glenn youngkin was able to hold his own in the areas around washington, d.c. and richmond. and that's substantial for a republican. but just in these rural areas, republicans continue to make huge gains there. that is a problem for democrats going

ralph northam on a percentage basis, he was at 60%. terry mcauliffe in 2021, just come back to present day here, he's underperforming in this county by five points. that is an extraordinary measure in an election that is razor tight. now i'll go to the southern part of richmond here. this is chesterfield. one of our target counties that we thought this is a key to watch. right now youngkin outperforming his margin that he needs in order to win statewide. we had him around 51%, 52. he's up on that by three, maybe four points. you have 88% of the vote reporting there in chesterfield county as well. let me take you down to the southeastern part of the state. show you another democratic county. kamala harris was there last friday, terry mcauliffe campaigned there many times. a dot on the map here, norfolk county. heavily democratic, strong african american vote. you have 3/4s of the vote in. mcauliffe is at 61.5%. store riskly how does that rate on a percentage basis? four years ago, northam was 73. yet mcauliffe is underperforming in area

it's ralph northam, the democrat who won four years ago, won loudoun county by 20 points. if you cut down to 15 or 10 and you're youngkin and you're getting better margins in other parts of the state that aren't quite as blue, that's how you start to piece together a victory. youngkin will have to do better than ralph northam four years ago who won the state by nine, and they basically suggest that they have made up a substantial amount of ground but the election itself, i think it's pretty easy to see it going either way at this point. >> i've been in touch with both of the campaigns today. i would describe their feeling right now as cautiously optimistic but kind of the emphasis on the caution. if you were a betting man, how close is this going to be tonight? >> you know, look, i think you take the bulk of the polling and people doing modelling of the elector which we've heard some things about, it ends up being a race that's super close. the other thing is that these metrics, i respect the people who do them, and i respect people who do the polls but these things someti

he's also i'm told spending time with his wife and governor ralph northam, who campaigned against youngkin, will meet to kind of go over the transition process. you can see already getting to work and that's something that young ynkin talked about on the campaign trail. he said over and over again, he would do a number of things on day one. day one will be busy, and part of the promises is on education. pledging he would make it central to his administration. he's obviously promised to ban critical race theory, something that's got a lot of attention, even though it's not taught in virginia schools. he's talked a lot about police and crime, and he's talked about cutting taxes, especially the grocery tax, something that he actually used against mcauliffe, and adds in a number of other venues. take a listen to what he said, especially on education last night at mhis victory party. >> we're going to embrace our parents, not ignore them. we're going to press forward with a curriculum that includes listening to parents' input, a curriculum that allows our children to run as fast as they can, te

they stood up and they tried to have meetings with ralph northam, the school boards, the education secretary and you know what they did? they all canceled the meetings. they never had meetings with them. a little headline here, terry mcauliffe when we tried to have him speak to our parents he asked for $20,000, for one hour with our parents. glenn youngkin did not ask for a cent. this is the real conscience that we need to invigorate and amongst all of our leaders. realizing we're human. not some white supremacist. we're good people. elizabeth: what do you say to that, laura? >> oh, my goodness. well we've seen how that worked out for mcauliffe, didn't we? asking for $20,000 and ignoring the parents and saying that they're not welcome in the classroom. i was in loudon county, virginia, last week i was, really was, it was hilarious to go through and see the signs that ashley said, keep parent out of the classroom, vote mcauliffe. that really shows he lost the respect of the parents. that race was really lost because he did not value parental rights in education and i want that to be a signal

this year, the outgoing democratic governor ralph northam will be replaced by glenn youngkin, the very wealthy head of a famous privacy equity firm called the carlyle group, or they will bring back a previous democratic governor of virginia, democrat terry mcauliffe. mcauliffe led the commonwealth from 2013 to 2017. he is running tonight to get that job back. now, if historical trends and patterns hold sway, republicans should have the edge here, going all the way back to the 1970s. every time a new u.s. president has been elected to the white house, that president's party has gone on the following year to lose the virginia governor's race. so with democrat joe biden winning the presidency for the first time last year, history suggests that the republican candidate, glenn youngkin will win tonight. that said, history doesn't get a vote, virginians do and recent polling has had this race basically tied, well within the margin of most polls. we've had our eyes on other important races tonight, too. new jersey voters will be deciding this evening whether to re-elect their democratic gover

northam signed legislation into law in april 2020 that allowed registered virginia voters to request absentee ballots without reason and vote 45 days prior to an election day. opening up the vote. i understand in their eyes, in the eyes of republicans, this question about voting is about who is driving that turnout, who are the voters showing up at those polls. i have to wonder, when you look at the high turnout and you look at the fact that the republican candidate benefitted from that high turnout, is there an argument that their continued efforts at voter suppression don't just hurt democrats, don't just hurt democracy, but could also hurt republicans? >> well, of course. and that is why it's for everybody's benefit that we enact these voter protection laws, to be sure that we have a fair voting playing field and that is not what's happening all across the country. and it's just so critical that we enact these bills that we have been pushing for. and we are going to continue to do that. because voting is a sacred right. for all of these governors and the state legislatures to cons

ralph northam won by almost 20 points here. one of the things that they're looking at closely is can the terry mcauliffe campaign match or come close to some of those numbers from 2017? so the math is there. this is a county, for example, that has doubled in population over the last 20 years. a lot of it swinging blue. having said that, if you look at the momentum, glenn youngkin, for example, i went to two of his events yesterday. one at an airport, a couple hundred people in the middle of the day on a monday. the enthusiasm there was high. last night at the fairgrounds here in loudoun county, a democratic county, he brought out 1,000 people who were traipsing across fields to get to where his event was being held. they're buying t-shirts, buying hats. incredible consistency to what they're talking about. they find his message on education to be something that resonates with them as one republican said to me, there's been a lot of frustration at the parent level and he has really tapped into that. i did, though, just get off t

comparing terry mcauliffe to governor ralph northam in 2017. northam lost working-class virginia. terry mcauliffe annihilated there with a 20 point shift. what that means is the white working-class vote no longer needs donald trump on the ballot to come out in droves for republican candidates. they are alienated from the national democratic party. they do not distinguish between murphy, joe biden, and democratic leadership, and they are energized and rabidly republican. that is something that should scare democrats up and down the nation because they are congressional majority. it depends on them not winning working like class voters but them not being annihilated 80-20. you get moved to 2021 numbers into the 2022 election and you easily see a loss of three or four senate seat on those numbers alone and probably 10, 20 house seats on that one democratic shift, not including the other democratic shift you saw among minorities in suburbia. host: henry olsen's piece says election results should terrify democrats. you can read it in "the washington post." what is it from the democrats

and then ralph northam got a pass on his black face and all that stuff. mcauliffe just couldn't pull it off. he thought he was just going to cruise in with nothing. the education thing just exploded. so, i'm happy. i think it shows the displeasure within the population of virginia for a lot of the left-leaning policies and politicians in their state, but i think in a larger sense it also, there's no way they are going to avoid this, it reflects largely on president biden and the policies of his administration, so on and so forth. host: a year ago joe biden beat donald trump in virginia by 10 points. this is a big swing. did president trump play a role in this election? caller: i think much less than the media would like to admit. terry mcauliffe obviously tried to drag him in with a bulldozer, tried to drag trump into the election and trump tried to insert himself into it. that's trump, that's what he does. but even the left-wing media, as i call them, has identified, yungkin did a marvelous job of walking the tight rope. he could be the template for a re
