to where romney ran. though he didn't -- you see he didn't actually get back to that romney number. so if he wasn't getting to romney numbers in the suburbs of northern virginia -- and, remember, romney lost statewide -- what was the other ingredient to this last night for youngkin? he made inroads in the suburbs. he won the bellwethers. then he met and then exceeded donald trump's total of the vote all throughout rural virginia. this was the other question mark because there are places we showed you yesterday morning. let's revisit it, it is a small one, but it's a story we see in the different, small red counties on the map. allegheny county, check out the story of the last couple election cycles here. back to 2012, this was a toss-up. mitt romney won this county by a couple points in 2012. along came donald trump. this is the kind of place rural, non-college educated voters, appalachia. donald trump did extremely well here. it was not guaranteed coming into this election that youngkin could do what tru

mitt romney in 2012. romney got blown out here. but you see the margin us with only 20. losing fairfax county by 20 points, if you're a republican, is a world of a difference between winning -- losing it by 42 points, as trump did. this takes you out of the game completely statewide. but if youngkin can win back some of those voters that republicans gave up in the trump era, that could put him in the game statewide. so we want to see if youngkin is making inroads in northern virginia and in the richmond suburbs. the other big question we're asking tonight, kind of circle a big swath of virginia here. southwest virginia. the shenandoah valley. you're seeing core republican areas here. believe it or not, republicans actually got stronger in this part of the state during donald trump's presidency. a lot of these are very small counties, but you add them together, there can be some significant vote there, all added together. let me give an example of this, though. take a look at small allegheny county. donald trump won this by 44 points. look what it was like for republicans

senator holly is nothing like senator romney -- senator hawley is nothing like senator romney. but when they all need to be on the same message, they are. why do the democrats struggle with that? why can't they take the win over the weekend and run with it? wendy: one is the democratic party is more diverse. they represent a more diverse set of constituents, from suburban women, for example, who voted for the democratic party recently, to working-class people, some world. so it is truly hard when you're representing a lot of different kinds of people. that is one problem. the second problem is they want the federal government to do a lot of things. they believe in small, limited federal government and the republican party. they can obstruct and it is a much simpler message. i think there's no question the independents are feeling much more comfortable with republicans now because they don't see trump as a looming factor for getting back into power, they are assessing republican candidates on their own merits. that is something the democrats are counting on. i think they have to
