this is abc 7 news. anchor: tonight, a mother and newborn baby saved from the side of any spate freeway. officers were called to the scene seemingly moments after that mother had given birth. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. ama: i'm ama daetz. tim johns explains at one point, the baby was feared dead. tim: it started thursday morning around 8:48. california highway patrol said they received a call from a transient woman to northbound 880 in hayward. when officers arrived, the woman was covered in blood and it was determined she had just given birth. an ambulance was called and at some point, the baby was thought to have died. jeff is a spokesperson. >> i'm a retired paramedic and i can tell you that sometimes a baby is born where it will be blue or gray and not breathing and can appear dead. tim: the mother was medically cleared later on involuntarily placed in a psychiatric ward. the chp received a call saying the child was indeed alive, prompting one officer to tell abc 7 news, "this is one o

laura anthony, abc 7 news. ama: police remain a visible presence in the union square two weeks after large groups of thieves hauled off thousands of dollars of merchandise. union square is one of the city's most popular holiday shopping destinations. the added patrols, they are there to make shoppers and merchants feel safe. today, california's attorney general general announcing names of five major players in an organized retail theft case. investigators found boxes and boxes of stolen goods stored in a warehouse in warner creek. the items had been stolen for three years from residential and auto break-ins and from stores like target, cvs, walgreens across the county. it was described as one of the largest retail theft operations in the state. now, the five people involved have pleaded guilty for knowingly buying stolen goods and some reselling for a profit. today's message from the attorney general was clear. >> you will be held accountable. you will face consequences. >> the ringleader will be sentenced earl
