yeah, jr. 70 stretch of i-80 as well as a large portion of i-50 both remain closed tonight as caltran says, it's simply too dangerous for people to be out on the roads. over the past several days as rain is swept through the bay area the sierra has been blanketed in feet of fresh snow. i think as far as christmas, i think this is the most snow we've had in recent 12 years so much has come down in the past few days that caltrans closed portions of both interstates 80 and 50 on christmas day saying they were too dangerous for people to drive on there were some spinouts and our crews were able to get a lot of the cars out. we saw some chp officers also having in our snow powers are having some issues as well as well. traffic cam footage shows whiteout conditions on many roads and caltrans officials are urging people not to try and go around the closures if our crews are having problems, you know getting through the state highways they're probably gonna have problems getting to you if you're stuck in those country roads, so think twice before trying to go around the closures caltrans says

caltrans shared video of crews bowing and deicing the highway. caltrans did open its newgate to allow northbound traffic to make a u-turn and go back south. both directions are now back open. dan: in the sierra, they deployed fire engines. they tweeted these photos of work in placer county. caltrans and chp say road conditions have improved significantly today. they were impassable the last couple days. remind visitors to always be prepared for travel delays and pack essentials. also one that things like fuel and grocery supplies in communities along the way to tahoe are still in the process of being restocked. ama: while conditions on the roads are improving, some sierra communities are still struggling. in pollock pines, thousands are still without power. pg&e says it may not be restored until january 10. >> as it stands right now we really don't have any way out. reporter: trying to stay optimistic, they are snowed in. >> could be a lot worse. we have a roof over our head and food. reporter: they use a stove to stay warm, they have a generator

several inches of standing water in sonoma county forced caltrans to shut down this intersection for hours. there were also some small landslides, but very minor. in santa cruz county, both directions of highway 9 were closed because of downed trees and power lines this morning. as of this evening, one lane of traffic is reopen, allowing residents to get to their homes. highway patrol is expecting orleans to reopen by bandai. >>> chief meteorologist paul heggen joint is now with rainfall totals. >> this one didn't bring as much rain earlier this week, but soaking rain for most of the bay area. let's look at a pitiful post rainstorm sunset. ross was the big winner, almost 3.5 inches of rain. ben loman in the santa cruz mountain, 3.25 inches, and lower amounts as we get lower in elevation. oakland hills, 1.5 inches. about 0.75 inches in pacifica. good soaking rain without flooding issues. there was standing water when the heaviest rain moved through. only 0.1 inches for san jose in the past 36 hours. the dry stretch will last for the next several days. we will look at the next rain cha

caltrans struggles to gets all the roads open. here's what is happening. a line of showers off of the north bay, with most of the action in marin and sonoma counties. that will change as this makes its way into the central part of the bay area. low pressure will arrive on the eastern side of this high right into the central bay area overnight tonight. it will increase showers. you can see at 8:00 tonight, we begin to get more measurable rain offshore, onto the shoreline. at 11:00 you see it extending off of pescadero through half moon bay. south san francisco, and the city. it moves to the east, but more is on the way. you can see the showers just off shore at 6:00 a.m.. you can see, widely scattered action, mostly centered on the south bay. the santa cruz mountains will pick up the most from this. then, by the time we get to late wednesday night, the rain begins to dry up from the north to south, and a shield of high clouds over the rest of the bay area. tomorrow looks like a good bet, but by wednesday night, chances diminish, and then look at thursday, f
