elizabeth palmer reports from seoul, south korea. w day to e tested for covid.ery the number of new infections here hit a record high following the government's easing of restrictions last month. at the eulji medical center we suited up in ppe to join staff looking after patients on the covid ward which has been operating at capacity. most are elderly and have underlying conditions with fragile immunity. how many vaccinations did you have? just one vaccine, he said, and then the virus struck. but he's the exception. more than 80% of korean adults have had two shots, and the government is moving fast to roll out boosters. in vietnam, there's been a covid surge, too, in spite of a push to vaccinate students the ages of 12 and 17. the good news is elsewhere in asia, covid rates are falling -- at least for the moment. travel restrictions in most countries were tightened up again in november as health officials across the region braced for the possibility that the drop in infections is a delta calm before an overwhelming omicron storm. >>

>> brennan: elizabeth palmer, thank you. we want to go now to dr. tulio de oliveira, who leads the team of south african scientists that first reported omicron to the world health organization. he joins us from stellen bash, south africa. good morning. >> doctor: good morning. >> brennan: you're seeing the impact of omicron firsthand. who is getting sick. and is this mild or severe illness? >> the omicron is only a few weeks old. we detected that very, very quick here. we estimate the date of origin of this variant is either end of october or beginning of november. normally it takes a few weeks between infection and the need for hospitalization. so what we saw in the last few days is increasing that transmission, and it is something that we're really looking very carefully at the data in south africa. >> brennan: is it too early to say if the illness is mild? >> the responsible way to say it is that it is a little bit early to say that it is mild. what we're going to have to take apart if it is a mild case, or if young people get infected, or if the

elizabeth palmer has more from her new post in seoul, south korea. >> reporter: the fact is the vast majority of covid disease in the world is still caused by the delta variant. it is hammering germany in a fourth wave that had alarmed medical staff so much they lit up the i.c.u. facility in red as a warning. and the air force has been drafted in to transfer patients to hospitals that can still cope. south koreans, all strictly masked, are lining up in droves to be tested as the country reels under the biggest spike since the pandemic began. and delta has been especially lethal in russia, where it has killed more than 75,000 mostly unvaccinated people this fall. so the fact that omicron is on the way now is deeply worrying. early signs from south africa suggest it is very infection. infectious. the government is now doubling down, pushing everyone, especially the reluctant, to get a shot. as for reinfection, another south african study, yet to be peer reviewed, suggests omicron does override immunity in people who already have had covid, so they catch it again. restrictions on travel
