jeff ranieri is back with us now. that's a sizable earthquake. >> definitely eye catching. a reminder to have that kit, be prepared and remember to drop, cover, and hold if we feel an earthquake. we are tracking some active weather and rain chances, as we head through this weekend. we are learning more and more information about what will be happening. and good news on. this overall, we'll see beneficial rains and breaks in between storm systems this week that at this point looks like it would help us avoid any kind of major flooding. tomorrow night into wednesday, a second system thursday morning, and a third one here as we roll into friday night and saturday. at this point, we are going to start it off dry. you can see on storm ranger and radar, dry conditions. showers offshore, but we are not worried about that at all. tomorrow morning, we begin with the clouds. temperatures in the upper 30s and low and mid 40s. 39 in the tri valley. san francisco 46 and the east bay 41. we get our first push here of rainfall, then we'll see scattered rain into the evening, and then that

let's begin with the expert here, our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. what's the timeline here? >> we'll see that rain continue through tonight and i want to start off with just a word of warning. flooding is a number one killer when it comes to weather, so that's why you really have to watch out tonight when it's dark.

let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who kicks off our week with some promising wet news. >> visibility still down to 2 and 3 miles you can see from our walnut creek camera and the air quality that's also unhealthy across the bay area except for the coastline. now, we are going to get some help from this system this is that is beginning to move in right now helping with that air quality and to give us a little bit of sun on the way tomorrow, there is not a lot of rainfall with it but just enough to stir up the atmosphere. now, this looks impressive but all the this down here is moving off toward the south away from us. so, i do expect from showers here in the northeast and south bay as we head into those early-morning hours. now, i want to get out way ahead of what is going to be coming our way. everything still looks good for what could be a stronger storm system by sunday night. also, into monday. so, this excellent news for our drought and you are going to be able to see here how desperately we need it. while we didn't get that october record rainfall, we have been unde

let's bring in jeff ranieri now. we are talking about what's going on there in hawaii. and along the coast of oregon. high earthquake activity. what do we know? >> yeah. it's definitely starting to popping up around earlier-this afternoon. but then, just kept escalating with more and more earthquakes and you can see it right there. just off the coastline of oregon. so i wanted to show you what we know about this. at least 30 earthquakes ranging from 3.5 to as high as a 5.8 magnitude. it is happening on the blanco fracture zone, magnitude five in that zone is somewhat common and historically, they have never be been follow bid something on land. of course, the big concern is tsunami. no tsunami warning right now. now, back here, across the bay area, we did get in on just a little bit of sunshine today. and some blue sky. was really nice. but here we go, again, as we head through tomorrow. clouds are returning for us and they are really not going to go anywhere as we head through the day. you can see those clouds will just linger right here across the bay area. so, no nee

jeff ranieri is going to show us when the next round of rain will hit. we begin with nbc bay area's stephanie there in millbrae for us where the car was submerged. stephanie, what happened? >> reporter: right. so, like you said, i'm here on hill bridge in millbrae, sorry. this is where or you're looking at an area where this morning was covered in water. authorities say it was at this underpass where crews dove in to rescue one person and they recovered two other bodies. >>> a community turned into a raging river. >> i just seen the water level all the way up to a level i've never seen in my life. >> the water was rushing this way and the entirety of the underpass was completely filled with water. >> reporter: it all happened early this morning during the heart of the storm. public works is still trying to figure out what triggered all of this flooding, whether a creek jumped its banks or this was just a freak accident. >> our yard, my yard is sunk with water. >> reporter: when the sheriff's office arrived deputies found two submerged cars under the brid

let's get to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. you said it was going to happen all the way through christmas, right? are we still on track for that? >> we definitely are. the storm system we had this morning with the very, very heavy rainfall this morning brought us .84 of an inch. we've seen most of that storm system moving out, just a few areas of spotty drizzle. the cloud cover, we'll see drizzle and fog dropping visibility. you want to be careful if you're heading to the grocery store or wherever even though we don't have heavy rain, it will be slick. tomorrow morning is when the next storm arrives. by 10:30 it lines up from guerneville to fort bragg. then i'm seeing orange and red with that rainfall. that's some very heavy downpours. we're looking at the chance of small hail tomorrow morning. winds, 20-40 and the possibility of thunderstorms. i'll take you through the full timeline of this coming up in less than 15 minutes. >> the recent wet weather may have caused one woman to go missing. police say crystal leah mccarthy van

let's bring in jeff ranieri who joins us. winter starts what, december 21st? it feels like winter tonight. it's cold. >> we're going to see temperatures drop quite a bit more than we're used to. if you're complaining that it's chilly outside we have a system dropping down once we hit friday and saturday. that's going to put us to upper 30s inland and low 40s, and we could even >> to low 30s for some of the inland, north bay, east bay and south bay. and by the bay those upper 30s and low 40s. we have to bring those pets inside, patchy frost is possible. again, friday and saturday morning. >> i have an avocado and orange tree, you know that. be careful of the crops in the yard. what about rain now? you talk about the rain. >> a few showers tonight and then we do have this atmospheric river shaping up once we hit sunday into monday. sunday, this thing lines up over the north bay first. then it's going to be pushing off to the south as we move through sunday night, also into monday. monday's really when the rainfall's going to be starting to add up across the bay

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking it all for us, as part of our microclimate weather alert. what's the latest? >> we can see the atmospheric river starting to develop, a lot different than what we have had in the past couple of weeks. you can see this stream of moisture here. it's really positioned a lot more to the south than we have seen lately. so we're going to get some of that moving in with this. but, again, it does not look like the tremendous amount of rainfall we had with this storm system last week. again, some much welcome rainfall on the way for us. right now on radar, we mainly have light-to-moderate rainfall. a few isolated heavier pockets. you can see just south of redwood city, rainfall moving through. picking up in fremont by 6:46. heavier pockets around richmond and just north of oakland. that moves through berkeley over the next 20 minutes and picks it up here in concord over the next 45 minutes. to the north, we have seen that rainfall just beginning to return right now. and that will increase that rain in sonoma by 6:48 tonight. if you're traveling, you

let's check in with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri about the status of these storms, where are we at in terms of the next 24 hours? >> we've got spotty showers tonight, nothing too major. as we head into tomorrow morning, look at this, 4:00 in the morning. you can see the orange and red there, those are heavier pockets. and what's going to make this different tomorrow morning is we'll see wind gusts of 20-40. small hail, even a chance of a thunderstorm. this is really going to come in, rake across the bay area. south bay also going to get hard by this once you roll into 9:30 in the morning, and then we will start to see this move out as we head throughout tomorrow afternoon. at this point, highest totals, the santa cruz mountains with one to two inches. everywhere else, we're about a half to one inch. >> that's tomorrow. then what are we talking about in terms of christmas eve and christmas day and the rest of the weekend? >> we've got more coming our way. we really haven't seen a pattern like this in over two years at this point. we've got the storms tomorrow morning. a half to one

let's start with our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. what are you seeing right now, jeff? >> we are looking at our top concern certainly over santa cruz mountains. that's where the threat is going to be the highest as we head through the next several hours. we have a flood warning in effect at least until 11:00 p.m. tonight. the rest of the bay area is under these flood watches and that's basically for fast-running streams and creeks. we could also see those clogged street drains that could produce some road flooding as well. number one concern, santa cruz mountains. if you don't have to travel across highway 17, please, please wait. okay, storm ranger mobile doppler radar has the rainfall, some heavier pockets. let's put a track on this and you can see we're getting heavy rainfall over tiburon, moving off through richmond through 6:05. the second zone is right over the castro valley and this is really hitting sam ramon hard with some rainfall and that would continue at least through the next five to ten minutes. and then as we move it off towards the peninsula, we've alre

. >>> let's check in with jeff ranieri. one of the busiest travel weeks of the air. >> look, i would just say, if you have plans this weekend that involves driving in a car in california, just be prepared for that rainfall. because we'll see on and off chances here through the next seven days. i'm still seeing a break in between these storms, and that should help to eliminate flooding issues. you can see the storm system tonight and tomorrow. a second one here on thursday and a third one on friday night and saturday. so let's take you into this. it's nothing extremely heavy. but we have a few moderate, isolated heavier pockets showing up on storm ranger. you can see right over oakland, we're looking at heavier rainfall that's moving off towards walnut creek over the next 40, 45 minutes to keep you wet. down here to the south, also in the peninsula, heavier pockets that will continue to move in through san leandro. and a couple sprinkles in san jose, but not much else. as we continue through tonight, we'll see the chances of
