meteorologist, kari hall, has a look at the forecast and hopefully it will warm up, kari? >> yeah, it's clear in san francisco. there's no fog. then take a look at the camera in walnut creek. >> wow. >> yeah, i will tell you that's the camera in walnut creek because you can't see anything. then heading over to dublin, you can see clearly. the fog has been very patchy. we are starting out this morning with low clouds, fog in spots and temperatures in the upper 60s. as we go into today it all clears out by late morning. sunshine for the afternoon and really nice warming up into the low 70s for a lot of our inland areas. we're taking a look at when the temperatures cool off and what is ahead if there's any rain. and chp calls out that fog. >> so does our traffic system, tied in with the weather system, and we know about the fog up here in novato, and it has been there off and on for weeks, and then benicia bridge gets a shout-out from chp, and we showed you the camera in walnut creek. here we have a disabled vehicle heading towards the antioch bridge, and fog was reported in

a lot of green there, kari? >> yeah, there have been pockets of heavier rain and that's happening right now on the peninsula, up and down the peninsula. while it gets lighter for parts of the north bay, we have seen the rain lighten up for ukiah and healdsburg, and then it lightens up towards napa and the east bay, except for antioch right now and discovery bay where the rain is lighter there or not happening at all. if you travel over towards 680, it's definitely raining there and some pockets of heavy rain as you move from san mateo down to palo alto towards woodside. for san josÉ we have light rain that will be picking up for the south county once again as the santa cruz mountains becomes the focus of the next round of heavy rain. we are also expecting the chance of some thunderstorms by late this afternoon. we are looking at the potential of gusting winds and small hail and pockets of heavy rain as this next line of really intense downpours will start to move in as we go into today. we are going to be track

or kari. >> okay. we're seeing some light showers moving through early this morning, and it's clearing further to the north. the last little bit of rain rolling through and clearing out as we take a live look outside in san josÉ. still low clouds and we are going to see temperatures remaining steady over the next several hours, and the icons will clear out by noon and reach into the low 60s for today, and that's about normal for this time of year. 59 will be the high in livermore, and 62 in santa rosa with a lot of sunshine later today. looking forward to that as well as more rain. mike, you are seeing the drops on the golden gate bridge. >> yeah, sometimes i think i can see the mist, but that could be wishful thinking. wishful thinking because we need the moisture, and kari is getting excited about the future forecast, so stick with her so you know the timeline of what to expect. over here, mild slowing, not a big backup but slowing and volume is building, and there's patches along byron highway. all

kari, are we getting snow up there anytime soon? >> looks like we could get a little bit by the end of the week, but we are looking towards next week for a more significant storm system. we have seen a change in the overall weather pattern. we were blocking the storms and keeping them further to the north. now high pressure moved out of the way and we are going to see rain and light snow. once again this week, there's not a lot of it, two to five inches. if you are thinking about going there for christmas it's looking more promising, possibly next week anywhere from two to three feet of snow in some of those spots. here we are getting ready for rain, and the first round very light in the north bay about 2:00 this afternoon. rolling through during the evening commute with light showers and then moving out by tomorrow morning. we'll talk more about how much you may see in a few minutes. mike, you are hearing about reports of a crash in the fog? >> yeah, highway 4, kari, where we see the slowing coming out of antioch and it's focusing

let's start off with meteorologist, kari hall. the first december forecast will be a warm one. >> yeah, starting out cold and foggy and the only thing you can see in the shot is the trees there in the foreground. this is walnut creek. this is what you will have to deal with as you drive to work. quarter mile visibility only in concord right now. in the north bay, we are seeing patchy fog drift around there. after that clears out the temperatures quickly warm up and we will have sunshine and a hazy sky and we could reach 70s in san josÉ. we will break that down and talk about our record-high temperatures and where we are normally this time of year on december 1st. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. >>> happening in a few hours from now, leaders in one east bay city are expected to take new action to combat the wave of retail flash mob robberies. bob is live. talk to us about what they are considering here? >> reporter: the walnut creek city council will hold a special meeting deciding whether or not to give their

kari, the temperature there, 38? >> yeah, it's cold, at least for us. it's going to be cold over these next few days, but once this storm arrives it will be milder for the early hours, but take a look at christmas in the park. we are in the last few hours of dry weather before we deal with round after round of wet weather. right now, yes, 38 degrees in san josÉ. we're going to see more of the 30s into about 6:00, and then slowly making it closer to the 50s by late morning into the afternoon. eventually we are headed for 58 degrees in san josÉ. east san josÉ reaching 57 because it takes longer for the rain to get here. we will see temperatures only reaching 53 in walnut creek and oakland and 52 in livermore. we'll see a high of 55 in half moon bay, and 51 in the marina district. the temperatures will be lower here as the rain gets here first. you want to make sure you are getting everything ready for you head out for work, your wind shield wipers are working well and everything around the house is settled. notice the center of the storm, this area of

let's talk to kari hall. it's cold out there, kari. >> yeah, just singing into the weekend. we will take a look at some of the events we have going on. christmas in the park, san josÉ, it's going to be very chilly out there tonight, and we are starting out with low 50s, and those temperatures will drop off in the mid-40s. be prepared for that and get a hot chocolate, too. we have golden gate park winter lights and that's going on in san francisco. 51 degrees, right before sunset and dropping down into the mid-40s by 8:00. we know you still have shopping to do if you are headed to the san francisco premium outlets, we will see temperatures in the low 40s to start out tomorrow morning. we are going to have great weather if you are hitting the roads. here's a look at some of your destinations. dry weather continues with 40s and 50s, and we wrap up the weekend with the falcons versus the 49ers, and the weather looks nice for that, in the mid-50s. >>> mike, you are talking about that too for your commute this morning and for the weekend. >> yeah, we will mention that, kari, beca

kari hall has been tracking the forecast. it's cold out there. >> it is cold and we have a lot of changes coming our way. more clouds moving in today and those chilly temperatures staying with us. tomorrow that storm will be coming in and we will see it with us off and on throughout the week with some rain and heavy sierra snow. take a look at the temperatures and what you are feeling. as you are stepping out the door, we have 30s in the tri-valley in the south bay, and we are two degrees above freezing right now in morgan hill, and we could drop near freezing and this is the next storm system moving in by early tomorrow morning. we will talk more about the timing and how much rain to expect. vianey has a look at our early-morning commute. >>> any overnight crashes have cleared out and green means go on the traffic map. i did notice a little slowing in the south bay but looks like it could be construction. let's look at the east bay drive time, northbound 880 to marina boulevard, nine minutes. and you won't have any delays fr

kari? >> we call this the first day of meteorological winter and it's normally starting to cool off at this point but we are talking about near record-high temperatures today. palo alto, it feels like winter for the start of the day and then warms up quickly with all of the sunshine, headed for the low 70s and mid-70s in sports, reaching 76 in gilroy and 74 today in east san josÉ. the forecast is up at the bottom of the screen showing the next couple of days could be warm especially for some of the inland areas, reaching up to 71 in danville, and 68 in san mateo and upper 60s in san francisco today downtown and in the mission district. 73 in clearlake, napa up to about 69 degrees. tonight a nice night to head out to sunnyvale to the ice rank. in the afternoon it will cool off quickly going up from the upper 60s, so bundle up. we're seeing all of the showers headed up around seattle and northward. this is where the atmospheric river is bringing in lots of rain and even flooding while high p

. >> thanks, kari. >>> 5:01 right now. residents in the santa cruz mountains remain on high alert even as the storm moves out of the bay area. >> yeah, this is where last year's wildfires raged. kris sanchez is joining us off of highway 17 in los gatos. this is a tense time for the homeowners there, kris. >> reporter: a lot of time we see the greatest damage after the rains stop and the land decides to do whatever it's going to do. it's still raining but it's not the big heavy downpour that we were in just yesterday. if you are not near that burn scarred area, the other news is it's a smidge warmer. the river went from two feet to 16 feet if you can believe that, all the rain running off the mountainside, and with that rain running off the mountain slide there's the threat of mudslides in the burn scar areas. some people decided to stay put. >> a lot of these houses right here, these bottom areas are considered mud rooms, if you will. if you have something valuable, you don't put it on your first floor. >> we're just going

meteorologist kari hall has a look at what to expect throughout the day and weekend. kari? >> yes, so now it's nice to have this break and let all of that heavy rain that we had this morning soak into the ground. over the past several days we've had anywhere from 2 to over 5 inches of rain in some spots. and it's nice to get these breaks in between to give us a chance to get outside, get things done, let that water soak in and then get ready for the next round of rain. we do stay in this microclimate weather alert even though it's nice and sunny out there. we have the heavy snow pounding the sierra. and we may see that taper off in the next several hours which would give to travel there in the next, i'd say, 6 to 7 hours and then it's all downhill from there as the next storm system approaches from the north. we will have several shots of some cold air coming in and that's going to continue to drop those snow levels. but once again during this break, get out there and enjoy it. we'll have nice weather tonight at blinky's illuminated holiday. it's going to be very nice, but

thanks. >>> to another kari, our kari, you are talking about weather as well? >> yeah, that storm in hawaii will make it over to the bay area. right now we have a weak storm system, and that rain passed and pushed to the south, but the roads are still wet and we have low clouds and patchy fog as well as the mist. here's a look at the system affecting hawaii with all of the heavy rain and the high elevation snow. that will make its way across the pacific into the bay area by the end of the weekend. we will be watching that. today our sky gradually clears and temperatures will head toward the low 60s. enjoy time outside. after that rain comes out, we will catch a break. >>> we are going to start here at the san mateo bridge, and i saw radar activity hovering around the area for a while. we didn't see major slowing bit light so we know there's moisture in the air and sheen on the runway. dumbarton bridge, san mateo bridge, our friend kyle reporting that there's a lot of fog. the volume is lighter, so we have things just developing there out of the altamont pass. >

but we need the rain, kari. >> sure do. >> yes, we do. we have been talking about how much more rain we need to really try and put a dent in the drought, and it's coming. we are getting ready for the storm system to come in. starting on sunday early in the morning, and then continuing into early next week rbs as we start out, as you are heading out on this friday, it's clear but it is cold. that's what you will feel, temperatures in the upper 30s to start, and then going into today, we are only reaching in the mid-50s this afternoon, and then we will see the temperatures diving right back down, cooling down quickly, and we will be in the upper 30s once again with some spots near freezing, especially as you take a look like san martin. once all of that continues into the weekend with the cold air, then we get ready for this atmospheric river. we will track this storm on every newscast, on every platform, and make sure you have the nbc bay area app so you can get alerts as rain approaches your location. we will see the rain in the north bay

kari, cold, cold. pull out the scarves and coats because you will need them. >> yes, this is what i will be tweeting about over the weekend and early next week, that storm that will be arriving. we are getting ready for a beautiful sunrise. get the camera ready, even though we are dark right now. we are seeing clouds moving by, and we are starting out very cold. we are going to get sunshine today. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, as we get ready for a lot of rain, so we can see the atmospheric river on the satellite imagery. it's a long narrow band of rain and it brings us about half of the yearly amount of rainfall. it will give us a big boost as we go into the next several days with it starting to bring us rain as early as sunday. we are getting ready for a lot of rain next week. we are going to be tracking this on every platform, every newscast. make sure you keep checking in for the updates. we are looking at the arrival of the rain in the north bay starting late saturda

meteorologist kari hall been monitoring that. to let up. >> yeah, it's been very slow to clear and so now as we are taking a look at this very dense fog in the trivalley through dublin, it's a slow go in a lot spots. watch out for that. once again visibility has been our biggest issue this morning. especially in some of the spots that don't typically see the fog. san jose woke up to fog but it's been starting to lift in some areas and getting clear. we will see the sunshine if it's just for a while this afternoon. reaching into the low to mid-60s for a lot of these spots and that's the reason why our temperatures are coming down today. we had some near record highs from the past couple of days. today we're looking at more seasonable temperatures. it's going to cool off again as quickly as it warmed up as we look at christmas in the park in san jose this evening, going into the mid-50s as we go into after sunset, later this evening. so make sure if you're doing that or enjoying what else is going on in the bay area, bundle up. we'

meteorologist, kari hall, has been tracking that. it's a cold start for the morning. >> yeah, we have all kinds of changes and as we go through the next few days, expect it to be still chilly and at times we will see the clouds rolling in today and we are getting ready for rain. we can see the active area in the region, and as we get ready for more rain i wanted to check the reservoir levels across the bay area. east bay mud reservoirs, and very low for the north bay even though we had the big boost earlier that came in october. the reservoirs statewide are 50% of capacity or higher, and overall about 51% for the historical average. this is ahead of more rain coming in. the rain that we see late this evening will be very light, moving on out and then we are getting ready for possibly a slow-moving atmospheric river, right what we need at this point because it has been so dry lately. this looks to bring in a decent amount of rainfall. with this atmospheric river, it arrives on sunday afternoon and continues through monday and possibly

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that rain as it came in and moved on out, kari. >> yeah, now we'll be left with some chilly temperatures across the bay area as the sky clears this afternoon. we are going to see some temperatures only reaching into the 50s. you can see where the rain is now. as it continues to move away, no more wet weather for at least a little while. we are watching our next storm that is going to be moving in. it looks like a pretty big one and is really going to gain some steam as it moves across the pacific into the bay area by the end of the weekend. the seven day forecast is now at the bottom of the screen. you'll see a lot of rain icons after the weekend. so we're looking at temperatures heading down into the 30s for tonight. it is going to be a cold one. and some of the coldest air we've had in quite a long time. we will also have to watch out for the potential of some freezing temperatures especially in the north bay valleys as well as the south county and that may create some icy roadways for the morning commute. then going into tomorrow we'll s

monitoring it all, meteorologist, kari hall. you are going to be one busy lady. >> yeah, we are hoping with the drought update that comes out this thursday, we will see some changes. it will take a lot more than a couple storms to dig us out of the drought. we are preparing for another round of much-needed rain. it's so cold out there right now. 39 degrees in palo alto. we will dip another degree or two before the sunrise, and we will see a mix of sun and clouds and then we will see the rain. the red beam there, you can get this same tool on your smartphone on the go, if you have have the nbc bay area app, you can get alerts for where you live. you see the storm off the coast that will be coming in later today. it will last for several days. we will talk more about this and what's ahead coming up. >>> vianey, any problems for the morning commute? >> things are getting busy. in the east bay, we have a new crash along southbound 880. i will zoom this in. it's near the industrial exit, industrial boulevard, there's two unrelated cr

meteorologist, kari hall, has been monitoring all of this, and that alert begins right now. many of the roads already closed. >> that's right. let's check the forecast with kari. >> yeah, we are seeing a lot of rain that moved through earlier this morning and was quite heavy, but it's starting to get a little lighter in some areas. we have seen the rain taking a break in parts of marin, sonoma as well as napa and solano counties. we will see the rain continue for the south bay and pushing farther to the south, so east and south san josÉ seeing the heavy rain, and at this point moving off to the south and east. this is ahead of a cold front. there will be clearing over the next several hours. there will be a chance to get out there when we take a break from the rain for a little while. l.a., san diego dealing with heavy rain if you are going to be traveling. we will take a look at weather-related airport delays and how the weather will be shaping up for the rest of the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >>> vianey is keeping an eye on a couple issued that slowed the

>>> kari? >> more clouds moving in and chilly temperatures as you are stepping out the door, and so far it's dry but we will see an approaching system that will bring us light rain later this afternoon into the evening. you can see all the clouds reaching across the pacific, connecting all the way to hawaii who has been dealing with the flooding and all the big storms there. we need a boost. as we look at our reservoirs out ahead of all the rain, i wanted to check the levels. in the north bay we are seeing on average some of the reservoirs at 67% of capacity, and for the east mud reservoir, 74% capacity, but we are seeing very low levels for the south bay reservoirs, the south county as well as across the state. we're in about 51.6% of the historical average looking at all of our biggest reservoirs across the state. of course the drought continues after that record october rain. then we have a quick-moving system moving in late this afternoon. all attention will turn to an atmospheric river mov

meteorologist, kari hall, has been, of course, monitoring that. kari, will that move out soon? >> it will be a while before it moves out. we have a weather system moving in and that will keep it cloudy, and once the fog clears out we will see the patchy dense fog sticking with us. we have a very active weather pattern headed our way. we can see the clouds connecting from hawaii all the way to the bay area. as we go into the next week or so we have been talking about how little snow there is in the sierra. we could see two to five inches this week, but if we could hold off to next week, there could be in some spots two to three feet of snow. we'll talk more about what is ahead with rain coming in, that's within a few minutes. mike, you say you need to be prepared for that fog? >> yeah, when you get through the fog, even if it's not blocking your visibility and you can see the roadway, sometimes the signs are impeded and it feels different and so use caution. the benicia bridge shows you, looks like a halo and looks like a tunnel you are going through this. we have a disabled veh

every day. >> do we have any snow in our forecast, kari? >> the fake stuff. you know when you go to christmas in the park, and you see the machines blasting that fake snow, that's what we will see. here's the fog -- i guess we could call that bay area snow, the dense fog, and at least you can still see the lights. it could be hard to see on your drive to work this morning. visibility about three quarters of a mile in the south county, and even lower in some spots. it's about quarter mile in livermore and there's low visibility in the north bay. a lot of the spots dealing with the fog this morning. near the coast we will have something else that is little -- that we have not seen in quite a while. king tides will cause coastal flooding. it's been a while since we have had that going on. in the winter months, we have had the moon closest to the earth, and it gives a greater gravitational pull and gives us flooding in some of the low-lying spots near the coast. we did have the flood warnings up for us, and not only today but tomorrow and sunday as well as the te

friday, it's that friday forecast, kari. >> yeah, we are so excited about that. it's a chilly one, and those temperatures will start out in the 30s for many spots. as we go into today, we will see a lot of sunshine. for the weekend, we will prepare for the atmospheric river with heavy rain and snow in the forecast for next week, and we are right now in the upper 30s, and santa rosa, 36 in dublin, and san josÉ at about 40 degrees, and it's 42 in oakland. once again, cold start. as we go into today, it only makes it into the mid-50s for this afternoon, and then back in the 30s for many of the inland spots going into tonight. all eyes will be on the atmospheric river that will be coming in. we will be tracking that, as today we only reach into the mid-50s. we will talk more about that, and the timing of the atmospheric river coming up in a few minutes. >>> we had a couple fender benders overnight, but no delays as of 4:32 this morning. the ride on san mateo bridge looking good, and that's not the bay bridge. 880, that's what you saw there. speed sensors are green a

visibility issues, kari? >> absolutely. when you wake up in the south bay and see it in downtown san josÉ, you say wait a minute, but this is what the rest of the bay area has been dealing with for quite a while. today it will clear out and be a nice day, but we are also watching out for king tides this weekend with sunshine, and then next weekend rain chances moving in but overall dry. we are seeing cooler air moving in with that patchy dense fog early this morning. we are only going to reach 66 degrees coming down from the low 70s yesterday. >> the antioch bridge and benicia bridge getting dense fog, and heavy fog across highway 37 and in the north bay. the tri-valley is hidden, and vasco will be hit. kari, you showed those low clouds and fog creeping into the south bay and so that's unusual. look at the dublin camera, that demonstrates how low the visibility is. it's moving smoothly, though, on the deck. >> take it easy was head out the door. thanks, mike. >>> coming up next on "today in the bay," the reason why giant t

meteorologist kari hall joins us. look at all that green behind you on the radar. >> it's so nice to hear the rain falling right now. i can hear it hitting the roof. i just wish we could sleep in a little bit longer. it's great to see all of this rain pouring. if you have to get out and drive through this, be very careful and allow for extra time. 280, a very slick drive as you head into south city right now as well as much of the east bay with the brighter yellows and reds there showing that the rain is really coming down. it's also picking up for san jose as well as los gat toes. still pretty light around eastern contra costa county. it's going to get heavier there in the next few minutes as well. the rain is meeting with some colder air, enhancing the energy we're seeing with this system. that could bring us thunderstorms by late morning. we could see some breaks as we go into this afternoon. there still will be a chance of rain at any point today. really timing that out, talking about how much more rain to expect.

we have live team coverage for you, and let's start with meteorologist, kari hall, who has been tracking this storm. >> yeah, you need an umbrella and warm coat. keep that hood on your head because it will keep you dry. it's a light rain we are seeing right now from marin on southward. most of the north bay taking a break but there will be a wave of showers coming through. most of it light right now. as you are stepping out the door in santa rosa, temperatures in the mid-40s. we will see the cold temperatures throughout the day only reaching into the low 50s. there will be some breaks, i think, by this afternoon. we will see the rain becoming a lot less widespread and just a couple spotty showers here and there with another wave of rain coming in tomorrow morning into the afternoon. we will see more waves of rain on christmas eve, christmas day and beyond. we will talk more about that a couple minutes. >>> vianey, how is the traffic? >> well, right now i want to give you a live look at some of the roadways out there. golden gate bridge, you can see it's moving along. the roads are slick

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking wet and windy weather. >> yes. this is part of a cold front sweeping in. this is also giving us more intense squalls and heavier downpours as well as gusty winds. more intense colors here indicating some heavier rain that we're seeing from san francisco southward up and down the peninsula. we'll continue to hear that rain hitting the roof. if you're about to head out the door, make sure you have all of the gear including the umbrella, the rain jacket as well as something nice and warm to wear today. we are going to see still some rain off and on today. we're seeing a surge of heavier downpours now, but there may be a break for some spots. how is it looking now on the roads? >> in lafayette along highway 24 at the pleasant hill surface street down below. look at this. miraculously no one was injured according to chp traffic reports. this truck was getting on the on ramp and the cab was hit from behind by another vehicle suspected of driving in dangerous conditions right now. that then fell off of the on ramp. we hav
