i'm margaret brennan in for norah. we begin with the first confirmed infection from the new covid variant omicron here in the united states. and cbs news has just learned that the c.d.c. is reviewing more potential cases in several states. the first case was detected in san francisco. that patient was fully vaccinated, but not boosted, and had recently traveled to south africa. hundreds of cases of the new variant have now been confirmed in more than 20 countries, prompting the biden administration to prepare stricter testing requirements for all travelers entering the united states, including americans. today, president biden said "this is why boosters are needed," and implored americans to get that additional dose. 135 million americans are eligible for boosters. only about 42 million have actually gotten them so far. cbs' anna werner leads off our coverage tonight from san francisco. good evening, anna. >> reporter: good evening, margaret. as you said, cbs news has learned the first known u.s. omicron patient came t

i am margaret brennan in for norah. we begin with the first confirmed infection from the new covid variant omicron here in the united states. cbs news learned the u.s. is reviewing more potential cases in several states. the first case was detected in san francisco. that patient was fully vaccinated but not boosted and recently had travelled to south africa. hundreds of cases of the new variant have been confirmed in more than 20 countries prompting the biden administration to require stricting tests requirements for all entering the united states, including americans. president biden implored americans to get that additional dose. 135 million americans are eligible for boosters. only about 42 million have gotten them so far. we lead off our coverage tonight from san francisco. good evening, anna. >> reporter: cbs news learned the first known u.s. omicron patient came through here, san francisco international airport. public health officials are crediting the state's large scale testing program for finding that case and

carley: and margaret brennan who did a cbs news interview with kamala harris pointed out that some democrats feel like the vice president has been given an impossible job by the oval office and if you look at the responsibilities that she was given, she wanted to do election reform. the other, the root causes of illegal immigration could be difficult for a democrat to handle but not impossible. when you think about what vice president mike pence was handed by president trump to handle the coronavirus and you didn't hear him complaining whatsoever, todd. todd: yeah. i think it is so vital that republicans make the case going forward between now and the midterms that some overweight 65-year-old guy in a red hat is not the threat to democracy that kamala harris and the democrats would like you to think is reality. i worry way more on a day in, day out basis about what's cultivated right now in the taliban controlled fields of afghanistan, more than i worry about that guy that i mentioned. the borders' a huge issue in all this. we'll be talking to brandon judd, president of the national border p

i have to credit the vice president she had a opportunity with margaret brennan with cbs to say the same thing. she said i'm into the here, i'm not here to blame anybody this is not a blame thing. we're in this together that is the attitude. you saw the cut from donald trump with bill o'reilly the other night. he was saying too, take the vaccine. you make your own decision but i got the vaccine and i got beasted. boosted. that is the american attitude. if i got medical advice i don't go to my councilman. i go to medical people, at least with a stethoscope, willing to buy one. i say, what do you hear? that is what he should be urging. go see the doctor, the medical professional you trust. i'm convinced you will end up getting vaccination if you go to a medical doctor, because the vaccine is effective. are they overstating effectiveness of it? are they not quantifying the breakthroughs? yes. there is a huge problem with that. seeing with a lot of these studies, no longer taking a study at face value. i want to know the science. i want to know where it came from. i will take the time to rea

she did that again with margaret brennan she reiterated her position of authority that's because she doesn't feel confident. either in her abilities or in the atmosphere of the west wing or in her support staff. she clearly knows she didn't earn this job. there is a lot of insecurity in her entire demeanor. carley: part of that insecurity. i mean, we saw it on the campaign trail and i that i was really run of the reasons she didn't resonate with the american people. and she dropped out of the election before some candidates that, you know, marianne williamson and huian castro. so that insecurity definitely is one of the big reasons why she doesn't connect to people. and then when she starts getting -- it's psychologic as well. when she starts seeing the poll numbers and people picking apart everything she says rightfully so she is the vice president and only gets even worse. when she was asked about national security. it was probably the weakest part of her entire interview because she said that our biggest national security threat, lawrence, was climate change and threats to our dem

also, what was buried in that interview with margaret brennan on sunday. is he taking credit for coming up with the vaccine. i got together with all the leading scientists and said we have got to come up with vaccine. no publicly you were saying vaccine is two years away. until recently you weren't even talking about the vaccine until it came to market. steve: obviously, he did such a good job coming up with it they were able to do it faster. there was one interesting bit of research that was released yesterday regarding covid. and this is something. a lot of people suffer from allergies, hay fevers, stuff like that. people with allergic conditions like hay fever, rhinitis or eczema 23% lower risk of covid infection. people with asthma had about a 40% lower risk if they're using steroid inhalers. they don't know exactly why that is, but apparently there is a little protection if you have got these allergic conditions or asthma. brian: just about everyone with asthma the blowers have the steroids in them. steve: blowers, insnarls. brian: that's what i call
