live in marin county, cierra johnson for nbc bay area news. >> keep it handy depending on where you are. thanks. >>> one school district in the east bay could extend that deadline for when students must be vaccinated. today was going to be the last day for students to get vaccinated ahead of that deadline. nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live outside schools in hercules. bob, why the extension? >> because not enough kids have gotten their shots yet. less than half. so the west contra costa county -- west contra costa unified school district said that all students 12 and up including the students here at hercules middle and high school must be vaxed by january 3rd. but tonight the board will vote on whether to extend that deadline to february 18th. that's to give students more time to get their shots. there are just over 12,000 students who are 12 and up in this district. as of friday, just under 5,000, that's less than half, have uploaded their vax cards. the district tells us another 400 are in the process of getting vaxed. 52 have said no, they won't get the shots. that leaves ov

both sonoma and marin counties have each confirmed. it's that first case of the new omicron covid variant in sonoma county. health officials say that the case was found in a fully vaccinated person who had recently traveled out of state. they say that that person had also gotten a booster shot but hadn't rate reached the full 2 week. mark 2 of the fully half full immunity in marin county. the case was found in a resident who had recently traveled to the northeast but well, this is the county's first detected case, a marine county public health director doctor willis says it's not the only case. >> now with holiday travel really do assume that the virus is here and is with us. it's a confirmation of that in our wastewater sampling. so we do so it's them going. and we've also seen evidence of omicron earlier in the week in several of our our sampling error is across the county. >> the doctor says the detection doesn't really change anything. he encourages everyone to keep wearing their masks indoors and getting their covid-19 booster sho
