kriti: this is very normal for pfizer. they have a long history going all the way back to 1999, but here is what is notable about this one. this is a much smaller deal than the kind they are making, 6.7 billion dollars. compare that to the 87.3 billion dollars back in 1999 when they bought warner-lambert. this is a company that doesn't actually make any sales or revenue yet, so this is very much a company that is expecting to be more of a longer-term bid rather than something becomes ready-made for their business. alix: along the same line, i am wondering how that stacks up against competitors, how a is going to but the heat on them in some respect. kriti: arena pharmaceuticals is a leading stock in the nasdaq biotech index. but they are kind of the volatile cousin, so essentially all of their peers have been rallying with respect to pfizer, moderna, some of the big newsmakers. arena pharmaceuticals hasn't had that kind of headline news yet, the relief they have had a more volatile stretch compared to some of their peers.

meg tirrell joins us with breaking news about pfizer >> joe, pfizer has the final results on its covid antiviral pill coming in the same as their interim results, 89% reduction in the risk of hospitalization or death when given within three days of symptoms to high risk patients it was 88% when given within 5 days which was higher than the interim results. there were no deaths among people who took the drug, versus 12 on placebo, these data are important because the ceo told us the fda was waiting for the final results from pfizer after they saw mercks go down so much between the interim and the final. the company also, for the first time, putting out new data from a trial in standard risk people. so folks who don't have a risk factor for severe disease with covid. this was a trial that included unvaccinated adults at standard risk as well as some vaccinated high risk adults it missed the primary goal, which was alleviation of four straight days of symptoms, but it showed it reduced hospitalization risk in these folks by 70% also both studies showed a ten-fold decrease in viral load at
