we generally calibrate our radars by tracking satellites. to me i think colin firth century perspective isn't really great place, and then the administration came in and gave us permission to award two contracts for the next generation interceptor. when you have a weapons system as complex as ground-based midcourse defense and you've got deployed ground-based interceptors of different models, you need to upgrade as often as you can sort you can face the threat. definitely paces the threat and having two was a great industry industry folks moving down the path in a competitive environment add speed to the equation. number one requirement was earliest placements possibly having to horses run down the track we will see speed and pretty excited about that because we are seeing is already even though we are very early in development. >> as some viewers may not know that's not always the case. sometimes you'll give the contract one company and they are tickled that what you want them to do but like you just described well by having two two competi

in this case that was probably some debris being picked up by the radar also. that little hook right near mayfield, that's right where the tornado was located. it's well defined signature that tells us on radar that there's a tornado so the tornado emergency was issued well in time. the problem that you have with these ef-4, ef-5 tornados is that sometimes even if that candle factory did have a shelter room and all the workers, they knew it was coming, i'm sure the tornado sirens were going off, their phones were going off, tornado emergency, tornado heading for mayfield, i'm sure they all got to the safest possible spot they could in that candle factory. they knew this was coming, but when you have an ef-4, ef-5 and winds 150 to 200 miles an hour, sometimes that's not good enough, unless you have an underground, you know, bomb shelter type or tornado shelter type location. we'll find out in the days ahead what kind of shelter that they had in this factory. you know, sometimes it just doesn't matter. you know, you're told get to the interior room of your house.

that's our mobile doppler radar. it's scanning across the area. looks like we could see a break in the activity this evening and another round of heavy rain moving in tomorrow. in all, an inch and a half to three inches for the santa cruz mountains, as well as the north bay. the sierra on track to get another four to eight feet of snow over the next several days. taking a look at storm ranger, that's the red scan there parked on san bruno mountain. as you head across marin county into contra costa county, alameda county, anywhere south of there we are seeing showers moving through. as we get a closer look right now in oakland as well as hayward, san ramon seeing some of the rain moving in. once again, most of it a lighter green so that indicates lighter rain. as you are driving to work this morning, many of the microclimates have measured half an inch of rain. take a look at our 7:00 timeframe. we are still seeing pockets of slightly heavier rain. we start to see some of the activity continuing to taper off for the north bay at 9:30, 10:00. much m

a live look at stormtracker 4 radar. yes, sea of green out there. that means a lot of rain flash flood watch. also in effect in sonoma and alameda counties tonight in the showers. they're not done with us today. thanks for watching. kron.g4 news at 5 everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. we begin tonight with the latest look at the big storm here in the bay, reminding a lot of people that atmospheric river. we had back in october taking a live look outside around the bay area. our traffic cameras here, the golden gate upper left below that. the san mateo bridge crowded on this monday night. the commute home bay bridge toll plaza upper right. not so much an sfo air travel has been challenge. yeah. you can say we haven't been warned right to. yeah. we're talking about that for a while. we may have yet another one to come. we're going to watch that closely. we're not done with this one just yet. so up there tonight, white knuckle drive on the way to work anywhere on the roadways. very danger seen a lot of puddling. >> out there on the road

yeah, a lot of that rain now coming into view by our doppler radar out there. now we've had as much as a quarter of an inch of rain in some parts of the north bay lighter amounts just a few hundreds elsewhere. but there's plenty more to come. in fact, over the next 7 to 10 days maybe longer than that, we're going to see a series of storms impact the bay area and the state they're now you've got slick roads. a lot of people traveling get ready for the holiday. and we've got plenty of storms coming our way. here's this first one expected to come onshore. you can see that rain moving through now more scattered showers and pop-up moderate amounts of rainfall as we head toward the middle of the night. and then as we head toward tomorrow morning. i think we've become more widely scattered early on. so not a washout for a commute early in the day. but then behind that, we start to see a change in the pattern. you get a little bit of a break by tomorrow afternoon. maybe a few scattered showers, but you can already see all that green to the north. that's the next storm

let's take a look at the radar. pretty quiet compared to yesterday. we do still have some low clouds lingering through the morning. it's stopping temperatures from are dropping below the 30s. santa rosa, 40 degrees, napa 42. i'll take you through your forecast coming up. >>> covid case numbers are steadily climbing across the country. >> we have a three week snapshot of those numbers. on december 15th, fewer than 4,000 californians were hospitalized with covid. last week that number rose to just above 4,000 people. as of yesterday, nearly 5200 californians are hospitalized for covid. hospitalizations hit a high of nearly 23,000 in early january last year, then dipped down and rose again during our summer surge, reaching nearly 9,000. this uptick in cases come as many americans still struggle to get tested. >> reporter: a wave that continues to swell, the u.s. seeing a 60% surge in daily covid cases compared to last week, largely due to the omicron variant. the contagious variant may be less severe than delta. >> i absolutely feel like i have not left

look at this live radar. you can see all of the green indicating rain is widespread and then the yellow and orange indicating heavy pockets of there's no end in sight for the rest of the night. thank you for joining us for kron 4 news at 8. i'm pam moore and i'm catherine heenan for ken wayne. this storm continues to really pound the bay area. it is far from over. we are bringing you team coverage tonight, making sure you know how much more rain is ahead and where the damage is located our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking the latest on this atmospheric river. but first, we're going to go to kron four's terisa stasio with more on how the bay area is dealing with the storm teresa. >> catherine and pound the bay area really got hammered today we had power outages. we have road closures. we had flooding. it was a lot to deal with. >> in hillsborough the flooding intense one resident rescued from these fast-moving waters by firefighters on highway 90 to a closure for several hours and in half moon,

take a live look at our radar. it's going to be an intense few hours. we are tracking what the rest of the evening is going to look like. >> plus, more wild weather, but this time, we're talking about the midwest. reeling from deadly and destructive tornados. >> when the power went off, it was very loud.

let's focus on the rain out there right now which is barely showing up on radar. there are some showers over contra costa and solano county, those are showing up elsewhere, there. a lot of locations have picked up, but it is not showing up on radar because a lot of it is intense drizzle which barely falls around the atmosphere. there is actual rain to our north and that will be a factor later on tonight. for this evening, we're talking about the mist, the drizzle, the general wetness sticking around with off and on showers. after midnight, more widespread rain and heavier downpours as air from the south surges up through the bay area. at the same time, the cold front will approach from the northwest to squeeze the atmosphere and produce heavier rain and the possibility for some rumbles of thunder, most likely timeframe for that will be between 3:00 and 6:00 in the morning. heavier rain moves off east. still lingering, like today there will be plenty of mist and drizzle to keep things wet but the next round of rain will develop into tomorrow evening. rain chances c

that is starting to show up on radar in the north bay very light, barely showing up on radar and what does not show up as the mist. the drizzle, all that either flies underneath the radar beam or the droplets are just too small. they hang in the air as opposed to falling like raindrops which is what the radar then picks up. we will see more showers spreading across the bay area. hit or miss activity which is not guaranteed to get measurable rain in your yard but after midnight tonight, rain chances peeking in the pre- sunrise hours of thursday morning. a few hundredths of an inch of rain on the high and. there is an atmospheric river heading our way over next week allen, we will be adding up the amount we expect through wednesday of next week. >> the atmospheric river, you put at a scale? >> 2. we will run through the skill and that you know how that compares to october coming up. >>> the other big skid story, the sentencing of scott peterson, a judge handing down a life sentence for the modesto man convicted of killing his pregnant wife. max darrow is one of the few reporters inside

let's zoom in using our mobile doppler radar. mill valley, san rafael up to the north bay taking a bit of a break. so is san francisco right now. if i zoom into this a little closer into the tri-valley, concord along 680, vallejo and the antioch area as well. wherever you see the pink, blue and white mix, that's that wintry mix that we've been talking about all morning long. even though we did see some dusting of snow in some of the lower elevations, it wasn't enough to stick but a beautiful sight to see coming down. fremont seeing some of the rain. san jose radar. it's not as windy as it was yesterday. also santa cruz some light rain. but we're not in the clear. the big story will be how cold it is. right now it's about 38 degrees in santa rosa. we're in the low to mid-40s to the south bay and we're not going to warm up by much. here's the reason why. we've got that cold air outlook. this has really been affecting us the past couple of days. we've been waking up to 30s and, of course, you've seen frigid air will be impacting you

let's show you storm ranger doppler radar. you can see in the yellow heavier pockets of rain, we have those over portions of the bay and the santa cruz mountains. we'll get in closer. this is moving off to the north and east. keeping it wet in san rafael in the next 30 to 40 minutes. off to the south, san jose picking up on some heavier pockets. you can see it right here, and that will be continuing certainly through the next several hours. now, as we get a wider loop, i want you to see this as we loop this over the past hour. there is plenty of moisture out here. that's going to keep moving into the south bay. rainfall totals, look at this. mount tam, 10.75 inches. santa cruz mountains 7 to 10. a lot of the lower elevations from santa cruz down to orinda, anywhere from 3 to 4 inches. a little bit less from pleasanton to gilroy. but still some very healthy numbers. and look at this snow tonight into thursday. 3 to 5 feet additional snow coming our way. we have full looks of the storm system and more rain on the way in about 18

here's a look at the radar, which is lit up. >>> wind advisory also in place for some areas. meteorologist, kari hall, tracking it hour-by-hour. this is "today in the bay." >>> welcome to monday morning. thank you so much for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. a look at your slick morning commute in just a moment with mike, but first let's start out with the forecast with meteorologist, kari hall. how long is it wet weather going to stick around? >> it's going to be a while before this moves out, and we will continue the microclimate weather alert. the rain continues today with some of the highest totals expected to be along the santa cruz mountains and towards the south and east, and we will see a chance of isolated thunder and hail today with lowering snow levels by tomorrow. we're looking at all of these impacts that will continue for us with isolated thunder and hail once again the main threat we will see today. as we get a look at storm ranger right now, it's covered with a study rainfall, and as we get a closer look we can see that

the radar once again look at all that activity and central and southern california. and then out towards the sierra. we showed you that new that new fresh no showing up out toward the west slopes of the sierra. we talked about to the winter storm warning in place now, today, there's a little bit of some green on the radar the possibility of a few showers this afternoon. i know san francisco about an hour ago reporting this shower activity. have you back out the maps here and here we go. here's that next frontal band coming on board from the pacific, and that will be our next source of some rainfall for your wednesday. here's our live piano. we're looking at bus, san francisco where you can see some clear skies and then a few clouds. we will cloud things up. but tomorrow as we are the first thing tomorrow morning and checking out the forecast model just showing you the rainfall here by eight o'clock we could. there could be a few showers up in mendocino county approaching yukiya. and then throughout the day, we do, bringing some rain chances and probably the afternoon

as you can see on radar things have been actually pretty light across the bay. it's been a gentle rainfall kicking up last night lasting into early morning hours and now into mid morning. we are going to be seeing conditions in the sierra nevada extra slick because we've seen some snow and rain conversions. so there are some icy spots, especially around lake tahoe. as you can see right here, it's that mix of rain and snow around south lake tahoe that is making for some icy conditions up there. so it's going to be a brutal one driving around today. tonight temperatures will drop and you really start to get snow taking hold rather than the rain snow mix. so futurecast. we do have the rain across the bay area today. staying light tonight our second system drops in and that is going to result in a burst of heavy rainfall smack dab in the middle of the evening on into morning commute tomorrow. so thursday. morning's commute likely to be even slicker than what we're dealing with right now. current temperatures are where right now in the 40's for most serious and you a

can you see the green radar lit up right behind me. roads are select already for this wednesday evening commute. it's not just rain, we'll see more snow on our bay pair yeah mountain tops. you were a busy guy again. we did it a couple days, tonight and possibly next week again. >> this one doesn't look as strong as the sunday-monday storm system, but it is bringing us rainfall beginning to peck up and even the chance of isolated hail. we think by 10:00 p.m., definitely going to be getting into the heavier possibilities. i do think we will get sun in here as we hit tomorrow's forecast. >> sun, but we're talking 30-degree temperatures. >> it's going to get cold, especially on saturday. we're doing good, this is a good kind of rain. in the south bay we'll have .25 due to a rain shadow and in the higher elevations, that would be 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. >> and for all the people flirting with the idea of going to lake tahoe, this could be a epic weekend. >> the snow is going to be so bad, it's going to be tough to get up there. 40-100 mi

you can see the green on that radar right there. check this out. levels still relatively low right now. rain expected to cause flooding yet, but still crews are on stand by. they've already cleared storm drains and a lot of people we've talked to are not fans of the cold rain but understand how important it is to have it. >> i don't like the rain because i skate, i'm a skateboarder. i can't skate, i have to find somewhere indoors which is hard. but at the same time, i know we need the rain. >> we do need the rain. the rain did cause scattered power outages but no reports of anything widespread. what do the next several hours look like? we have the man that can tell us that. jeff ranieri, what have we been talking about for this evening. >> we're dealing with spotty areas of drizzle. tomorrow morning, that's when the storm system is going to hit. storm ranger mobile doppler out here at san bruno mountain scanning to give you a good fix of what's happening on that radar. so far we saw .84 in mill valley. san jose with .35. we've seen the latest storm

finally, some bright young man over in the corner said, hey, the lining radar is working -- landing radar is working, but it's locked up on infinity, have them pull the switch, reset it, see if it works. so we pulled the circuit breaker, put it back in, and sure enough, the landing radar came in shortly after that. we got cleared to land, and it's sort of a -- man, that was close kind of routine. as soon as we pitched over, there was beautiful -- the way i had seen it hundreds of times from the scale model. came on down, made a very -- very soft landing. as a matter of fact, soft enough so that even though we landed in a slight crater like this, the uphill leg didn't crush like it's supposed to. we had crushable material on the landing. so, you know, instead of slight right-wing down, perfect landing, shutting off the switches and ed mitchell turned and said, alan, what were you going to do if the landing radar had not been working by 13,000 feet? i looked at him and said, "ed, you'll never know." >> there you were -- >> i would have gone down, of course. oh, yeah. to have come that far.

washington deprived them of many tools that supplied them with radar sets. but to make the air crystal control center effective, it required liaison officers to identify hostile aircraft. the navy never identified such liaison officers in the armies input proved to be in error on the relevant morning of december. first, early came two planes that were sent to head to scout and determine the state of the american alert picked up by radar but dismissed. there is virtually no likelihood that these two stray aircraft could have triggered an alert even if there had been a high state of alert at an air control center at that time. this is not the case with the other two tactical warnings. the second warning came on century duty outside pearl harbor. -- ward sank the submarine with gunfire and sent in an immediate urgent report. this reach the duty officer at headquarters. but he did not order a general alert. the third tactical warning became a famous story. part of what you heard in the oral history this morning. these two junior enlisted men, operating that one
