interesting. >>> let's check in with meteorologist, rob mayeda. he's in for vianey with our microclimate forecast. it's foggy and cold. we went to look at the holiday lights last night to squeeze it in before the rain comes. >> yeah, having the heater on, of course. after sunset last night, it dropped into the upper 30s. right now 43 degrees in san francisco. that's one of the warmer spots this morning. dublin down to 37 degrees. you see the fog there. visibility out towards livermore and dublin, about half a mile. look at san josÉ. we now dropped to 33 degrees out there at christmas in the park, very chilly to start the morning. the fog is patchy in nature. seeing some of it around the dublin, 580, 680 interchange. the fog will likely stick around, especially for the east bay and the north bay through about lunchtime. you see the time stamp there through 12:00. because of that we are going tough time warming up today. as you see there, a few high clouds starting to approach but the rain for now holding off to the west of the north bay. hour-by-h

rob mayeda is joining us now with all that. rob. >> we are starting to see some of the rain now move into the bay area. some around richmond and this will be a lot more rain than we saw today, which was more or less kind of like melting snowflakes at times around the bay area you will see around monterey bay, this band pushing up from the southwest approaching santa cruz, watsonville, and casterville in the next half hour. another line of showers moving across marin county bringing rain to richmond right around the golden gate bridge. this will be different than the weather we had this morning, where we were just tracking those low snow levels. this will involve higher rain rates at times right in time for the morning commute, you can see some of those isolated stronger cells which could fire up along the coast and the peninsula. there is a slight chance of thunder in the mix for tomorrow too, so plan on rain especially for the first half the day. then, temperatures as rain moves in, initially temperatures won't be too cold. mo

we still have time before it hits so let's go to meteorologist rob mayeda with what to expect. >> we begin to see the outer fringe of the storm, these mid and high-level clouds that made for a gorgeous sunset. by this time tomorrow, rain returning. heaviest for sunday we think will be in the north bay. as we look at the rain totals again, boosted by the atmospheric river, you can see as we go through the progression from sunday to wednesday, the bay area average at least 1 to 3 inches of rain. in the santa cruz mountains, i think we will see over half a foot of rain coming down, most falling on monday. the other component that will get your attention tomorrow is our wind advisory. gusts probably around this time tomorrow afternoon and evening going above 45 miles per hour. this includes all of the east bay, the south bay and peninsula. at times the wind gusts getting above 50 miles per hour. by the time we get into early monday morning, the final component is the cold air. this is great news for the sierra but it likely will shut down travel at times as we see anywhere from about 5 t

let's get right over to meteorologist rob mayeda. you've been so busy tracking all of this for us. what's the late s out there? >> i think storm ranger is about to get a bit of a pressure wash. here's the rainband. most of the significant rain for now is on the coast, but i think by 11:00 tonight we'll begin to see some of it spilling in. some of these coastal mountain rainfall totals will easily be into the 2 inch range. likely going from a half foot to 10 inches of rain through the middle part of the week. now, this time tomorrow evening a wind advisory under way for the bay area, these areas in orange for the east bay, peninsula and south bay wind gusts late tomorrow into monday morning could be higher than 50 miles per hour, and then the final volley of this storm is that heavy sierra snow. we're talking enough it could be 5 to 6 feet of snow by early tuesday morning and rolling snow levels which could impact this year in the bay area as well. >> wow, rob, thanks a lot. well, pg&e says it is stockpiling power poles and other equipment to be able to restore power as quickly as i

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda with the latest timeline. rob. >> we are seeing the transition between the cold winter blast and the rain, which is still hanging on around the south bay and we still have flood advisors for the south bay due to rain rates that could cause localized road flooding at times. you can see from fremont into san jose and around campbell, down along highway 17, you have the heavy rain rates at times. we expect it to continue probably for the next hour or so. we're beginning to see things dry out to the north of san francisco. this transition to drying conditions should really kick in after 8:00, 9:00

. >>> meteorologist rob mayeda is keeping me posted this week about when to go to lake tahoe. seems like it's still snowing, but we're going to get a break soon. >> it's what he was talking about as well, a 24-hour period tomorrow. i think the crews will start to make progress as the weather turns in their favor. right now snow showers out there. but the trend moving forward will be for drying conditions, especially for thursday into friday and saturday. we begin to see the conditions clear out a little bit of snow showers on friday. but nothing like we've seen the last few days. from thursday through sunday, we're expecting mainly dry conditions, but very cold conditions across the sierra. >> it's a good time to go up. looks like it won't be a lot of snow on the ground. hopefully cal trans cruise can keep up? >> especially by friday, they should be open, pretty good. >> great day for skiing. have they received a lot of snow? is more snow coming? >> we keep setting new records every day. we've gone watching this with the central sierra snow lab, dr. schwartz has been measuring

. >> let's check in with rob mayeda, and how low can it go? look at these gorgeous sunsets. >> pretty pictures around the bay area now, but you'll want a nice, thick coat if you head out. san francisco, not bad, 51. not all that chilly. san jose at 48. look at dublin and livermore, it's 43 degrees already. an east wind at ten also helps to bring in some of the fog, too. we'll be watching for the patchy fog heading into tonight. by 11:00 if you're out and about, we'll have 30s by 11:00 for many valleys. tomorrow morning, low to mid 30s once again for places around the north bay and east bay. this out ahead of the next change in the weather. days of rain ahead. peaking we think around tuesday through thursday. the first wave of rain that comes in from tuesday into wednesday could put another two to four inches of rain around the north bay. we'll also have wind at times and the potential for heavy sierra snow. look at these totals heading toward christmas day. toward the end of next week, that looks just like what we went through. we had seven fe

meteorologist rob mayeda in for kari. when does the latest storm arrive? >> like the two are almost overlapping. we had some sun earlier. now the clouds are thickening up and starting to see a few more showers out there west of san francisco. 49 degrees. and our stormranger there, a great perspective looking west of san francisco as those showers start to approach the golden gate bridge there. a few more light rain showers across the north bay as we widen out, you can see the main focus for the storm is still up here on the north coast. rain into mendocino county and northwest sonoma county. this will be dropping south as we head through the evening commute for areas north of the golden gate. pockets of, at times, some pretty intense rain around sonoma county. by 11:00 tonight, you begin to see heavier showers move through the central bay and get into the santa cruz mountains and south bay. another thing will be the wind speeds. you probably noticed outside things turning gusty. winds of 20 to 40 miles an hour. coming up, we'll talk about how much more rai

. >> let's get to your forecast, meteorologist rob mayeda joins us for a closer look. rob, how cold is it going to get for us? >> very cloeld, probably freezing in valleys. before that, let me show you what you can't see outside. that is walnut creek right now. you see the outline of the trees near downtown. fog again a problem tonight. thicker than it was at the same time last night. notice the visibility, santa rosa and concord to a quarter mile or less. watch out for that. that is going to have a high impact on your morning commute. by this time tomorrow night, we should be seeing showers in our storm ranger mobile doppler radar, followed by wind at times and a big drop in temperatures. looks like with this first system coming in late tomorrow, light rain at times. the biggest punch with this first storm likely to happen just before sunrise tuesday, then rapid clearing brought on by windy conditions. by thursday, a colder storm dropping down the coast. the plunge of colder polar air. continental polar air dropping down the west coast. that's going to have a big impa

let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. and, rob, let's start with the rain. when is it going to get here and how long is it going to last? >> once it arrives, starting up later tomorrow night into tuesday, it is going to be sticking around a while. but in the meantime, watching for the patchy fog. you saw that in some of the city camera views in walnut creek and dublin. right now, viz ibltd is not too bad but we do expect another round of patchy fog tomorrow morning. so no rain for tomorrow morning's commute. and indeed, mobile doppler radar showing things relatively dry around the bay area. during the day tomorrow, i wouldn't be surprised if we begin to see a few light rainshowers passing around the north bay. but the main event with this first storm, though, still sitting here offshore. so, once it arrives on tuesday, and we add this up -- four-day rain totals here, from tuesday to friday, shows the biggest totals up here in the north bay. about 2 to 3 inches of rain. 3 to 5 inches of rain possible in the mountains around the santa cruz mountains and fwhorg

rob mayeda joining us. >> it is the top three since 1970. it set the all-time december record. we're in the top three, and we've still got another maybe foot of snow that could come down across the sierra tonight. and it's just super sized the snowpack up to 159% of average, and there's reason to believe that might get closer to 200 next week. as the pattern stays active. we're going to get a little bit of a break for new year's eve, but then the rain and snow make a big comeback next week. it is chilly outside. it feels like the sierra around the north bay, with highs in the mid to high 40s. south of livermore we did have a little dusting of snow earlier, 45 degrees, and the view from walnut creek, there's mt. diablo, hiding out in the clouds. right now we're seeing low 40s across the north bay. you factor in the wind and the wind chill or feels-like temperature outside is more like the upper 30s at 5:00. we will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s, not quite as cold, as we're going to have rain move back in. a bit more mild with temperatures overnight, but highs tomorrow uppe

with more on that, rob mayeda with a look on the impact on our rain season. rob, what kind of stuff are you finding out? >> we're seeing the surplus from the big weather events still under way with the second one occurring right now. you can see the gains in terms of the rain surplus. how much more rain we have compared to what we should have. santa rosa, 15 inches of 18, almost 8 inches above where we should be. that number in san francisco, almost 9 inches of rain. last year, one of the driest years we saw the entire rain season the 8.96. as of yesterday at midnight we had 8.97 and just had another two or three inches today so the surpluses that we're seeing now, these numbers will go up. we'll be into double-digit surpluses. you'll see rain surpluses this early in the year starting to climb. once you get the rainoff like we're seeing with the rain totals, this is the type of rainfall that really starts to get reservoirs moving upwards. we've been seeing that towards marin county. hopefully the santa cruz mountains will see some of the reservoirs reacting t

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. >> it's good news considering that snowpack is about one-third of our water reserves as we head into summer. we have seen a record start for that snowpack. for the central sierra going back to 1970, this is the fastest start to that snowpack in terms of how high it is now since october 1st to today that we've seen on record in almost 50 years. now, we've also seen a big rain surplus here in the bay area. you probably noticed over the last couple of weeks, more flood advisories as that water runs off more away from the hillsides in places like san francisco. almost running 200% of average. 16 inches of rain so far this rain season. we would normally have 8 by this date, and you'll notice last year we were still in fire danger with 2 1/2 inches of rain. finally now the bay area reservoirs are beginning to react to those inflows. up here, marin water district, almost 90% of capacity. east bay up to about 87%. finally our south bay reservoirs, up to 91% capacity. even lexington here at 48.8% has jumped from 20% capacity just at the beginning of the m

let's get straight to meteorologist rob mayeda tracking it for us. >> we are seeing more green on the radar. mobile doppler radar scanning the skies west of san francisco, into marin and sonoma and napa counties. light to moderate rain crossing into the north bay. it will be the same areas we think between now and 7:00 tomorrow evening that will see the beginning of the top rainfall totals as we wrap up the weekend. you can see the areas in red showing up throughout the north bay, anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of rain. another area to be watching this time tomorrow night is the santa cruz mountains where we are likely to see the biggest impact in terms of rainfall across the north bay mountains and santa cruz mountains. another thing we will notice, increasing wind speeds around the south bay. gusts from 40 to 50 miles per hour. that wind advisory gets started at 4:00 for the east bay and south bay, into monday morning. the final component to this triple punch that the storm is throwing at us is tremendously heavy sierra snow. as you see by the time we get through tuesday we will be loo

rob mayeda joins us. a lot of people going to work tomorrow. what's it look like in the morning? >> we'll probably see more rain for the first half of monday. we're beginning to see the rain around the bay area. not as much for now around the north bay. but that will change. a cold storm works its way down the coast. this will be dropping south, during the morning commute. the rain will be heavy enough at times. some spots will likely cause some ponding on the roads, especially around the central bay and south bay for the morning. the day starts off with temperatures in the 40s. able to watch the polar plunge of cold air. the air dropping down the coast, indicates freezing levels, 1,000 to 2,000 feet. low snow levels could be in the north bay and the higher peaks along the range. the north bay can be in the upper 30s and low 40s. we'll talk about the drier conditions in our seven-day forecast. >> one way to get updates, follow rob on twitter. he's there a lot. he can give you a look at what's next. >>> not just the traffic caused by a snowstorm. a search is on for a skier that ha
