cnn's polo sandoval is live on the scene. the warehouse took a direct hit. what are you seeing? what are you hearing? what's the latest? >> reporter: what we heard from ill know's governor is that local officials with look into this to see if anything else could have been done to see if there was anything to prevent what took place. just for background for our viewers, it was on friday evening when the tornado seemed to have zeroed in on this amazon shipping center, basically cutting right through it and causing these large concrete walls to collapse, eventually leading to the death of six employees inside friday night. speaking alongside with the governor, we heard from a couple of amazon executives who maintained they did everything that they could to ensure the safety of those employees, that they followed the protocols, including using bull horns to urge employees, some 46 people inside to get to an interior space. it was described as a shelter in place space. it was not meant to be a storm shelter. it didn't have a basement and didn't have to because of building codes. auth

cnn's polo sandoval explains. >> reporter: the state of new york reported its highest daily covid case count, roughly 21,000, earlier this week here. here in new york city the city's health commissioner saying they have noticed a tripling of new cases just in the last month alone. it's certainly why authorities are making sure, at least calling on people to take those steps to protect not only themselves but others, especially because they have noticed two indicators, or a trend in two indicators including the seven-day average, which topped about 120,000-plus across the country, and the total number of covid hospitalizations that exceeded 68,000. so authorities certainly hoping that people will take those measures like getting vaccinated, getting boosted and getting tested to try to lighten the load on those health care workers that have already been at it for quite some time. when it comes to getting tested, we have certainly seen an increase in the interest of people including massive lines at facilities throughout the city here. in fact, just early saturday morning there was a long

paolo sandoval is live at scene. i understand that there is some news in terms of an investigation of what went on there. what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, john. we've actually learned that inspectors with the occupational health and safety administration have been here after that tornado basically zeroed in on that amazon shipping center destroying part of it and leading to the deaths of six people inside. we're learned there's a total of 46 people inside that facility on friday night when the storm tore through there. the team has about on ground assisting here based on what that office is killing cnn. and after that we would learn of any safety violations that they violated. they don't want to know if there's anything or not that triggered this investigation or if it's just routine. serious matters and six people's lives were cut short and we've heard from amazon basically all weekend leading up to that storm the moments before it struck. about 11 minutes and she received word of the tornado warnings and lo

polo sandoval has the latest from new york. >> reporter: new york state reported the highest case count so far earlier this week, about 21,000 case. the health commissioner saying they've seen a nearly tripling of the daily case whensh -- when you look at national indicators there are two that are alarming, the seven-day average, and also total number of hospitalizations across the country exceeding 68,000. that's really why authorities are stressing that people take those steps to protect themselves and others to keep those numbers down in the hospitals and lighten the strange that have been at it for so long here. that also includes getting tested ahead of christmas weekend. in fact, here in new york city, we saw a high interest of people who are getting tested in long lines early this morning, those folks lining up outside this urgent care clinic to make sure they have an appointment to come back to get tested. >> because i've been potentially exposed, i've had friends -- i had a niece that was going to come up to visit. we canceled that. my friends were, like, let's have a little ga
