. >> let's go to msnbc correspondent shaquille brewster who is in oakland county, michigan tonight. shaquille, what is the latest at this hour? >> reporter: lawrence, i'll tell you, that manhunt for those parents is well under way. it involves the fbi. it involves the u.s. marshals. it involves the county sheriffs. and we know that this is a manhunt that started as that press conference was happening. as those charges were being filed against the parents, that's when the county sheriff's office started their search for the parents. and according to the attorneys for that couple that you're looking at right now on the screen, according to the sheriff, there was some contact between the attorney and the sheriff's department as recently as thursday night. there was some plan for if there was a charging decision, the attorney would hand over that couple to the authorities. however, the attorney now says that over the course of the morning, there was a loss of contact, or that's coming from the sheriff's department, there was a loss of contact between the attorney and that couple. later

nbc's shaquille brewster is in minneapolis outside the hennepin county courthouse. also joining us, danny cevallos, msnbc legal analyst. shaq, walk us through what's going on right now, and tell us what we can expect from defense? >> reporter: the first witness is a use-of-force expert, rebutting what you heard from some of the prosecution witnesses, this expert saying that the force that was used by the officers was appropriate. it's still in that direct examination right now, so we'll see what the prosecution is able to get out of this expert in that cross-examination. but you mentioned this morning the prosecution rested their case officially. it came after 25 witnesses were presented on their behalf. the last and final witness being the father of 20-year-old daunte wright who gave emotional testimony yesterday afternoon. listen to what we heard from his father. >> daunte lived with us. he pretty much was there every day. and he loved his son. >> and you love your son daunte wright as well. >> a lot. i loved daunte. he was loved. >> do you miss him? >> i miss him

shaquille brewster is in monthiac, michigan. what is the latest? >> reporter: the 15-year-old suspect was moved from a juvenile detention facility to county jail late yesterday after we saw him appear in court virtually for the first time since this shooting. he entered a not guilty plea for those very serious charges that's facing right now. you mentioned them before one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, the seven counts of assault with intent to murder and the 14 counts of possession of a firearm and the commission of a felony. we also learned yesterday from prosecutors that they believe this shooting was intentional. it was premeditated, in their words, based on an investigation that they did where they say they recovered a journal and a video of him apparently talking about killing students. you mentioned four students were killed in this shooting. as of last check, three other students are still in the hospital right now, including one student who is in critical condition. the sheriff yesterday still called

nbc's shaquille brewster is live outside the courthouse in minneapolis. shaquille, court is back in session. what do we know today? >> reporter: of course, we're waiting to see when kim potter will take the stand, but the defense has called as their first witness for today, dr. lawrence miller. he's a psychologist and the defense is bringing him up to help the jury understand their perspective of what they say happened. we're going to hear terms like action error, slip and capture, we had the psychologist up to explain why they believe kim potter reached for her gun when she thought, she says, she was reaching for her taser. this comes after we heard from several witnesses yesterday called by the defense that were intended to poke holes in the case that the prosecution has been laying out. the prosecution is saying that it was criminal. that kim potter should have known better than pulling out her gun instead of her taser, as she said she intended. and the prosecution is arguing that if she did intend to pull out her taser, even that was unreasonable. but

shaquille brewster is on the ground in pontiac, michigan. shaq, what can you tell us about this news conference from the county prosecutors? this is where we're going to find out if the parents are going to be charged? >> that is definitely the expectations, craig. it's being billed as an update on the latest with the investigation, but the prosecutor during a press conference yesterday said that she would have a decision on whether or not to charge the parents of this 15-year-old suspected shooter and possible connection to the shooting. she would have that decision within 24 hours. now, she didn't get into the nature of the possible charges or the severity of those charges, but one thing that we've been hearing from her since the day after the shooting is an emphasis on the idea of responsible gun ownership. we know, for example, that the gun that was used in the shooting was purchased by the suspect's father a week ago from today. so there's a question over how that suspect got access to the gun and how that gun then got into the school.

we head there where shaquille brewster has been covering that story. word of an outcome. i didn't hear the v-word, verdict. >> reporter: exactly right, chuck. it was a note that came from the court a couple minutes ago telling us that an outcome has been reached in this trial and we'll learn what that outcome is by 3:00 p.m. eastern time today. now, you mentioned they did not use the verdict word. we're trying to see if that's standard procedure or if we can read anything into that, but there is an outcome in this case after about 27 hours of deliberations. this is a jury that has been remarkably silent for the past day at least. yesterday not getting any notes from them, only confirmation that they deliberated for more than nine hours yesterday. but over the course of their deliberations, they have asked the court at least three questions, one of them signaling they were struggling to reach a consensus, another was asking for more information or more access to the firearm that kim potter used when she killed 20-year-old daunte wright. just to back up a little bit, potter

shaquille brewster has been following the story for us. shaq, we expected the day to be emotional and it sounds like it was. >> reporter: that's exactly right, chuck. we heard from five witnesses already today. the court is on a lunch break right now. the most emotional was a woman who was dating daunte wright at the time and was a passenger in the vehicle. she gave us unique insight on what happened and what that process looked like beginning with when officers asked him to pull the car over. she said the normally happy and positive daunte wright became nervous and flustered as he was asked for his license and insurance. that was what the rest of the testimony was focused on, the crash scene, seemingly drilling down on the point that we heard the prosecution make yesterday during opening statements, that even after kim potter used her gun instead of her taser, mistakenly, in her words, that no help -- or that information was not radioed in to other officers. so it led to this minutes-long standoff at another scene right down the street wh

joining me now is nbc's shaquille brewster, live from outside the potter courthouse in minneapolis. i know the jury is meeting right now. what are you hearing? >> that's right, kristen. it comes after about five hours of deliberations yesterday. and it did include a question from the jury about two hours into those deliberations. they asked the judge about the timing of an interview that kim potter did with one of the psychologists who took the stand as part of the defense. they -- the judge, rather, said that all of the evidence had been submitted, and this was an interview that regarded the use of a taser and why kim potter drew the weapon. the prosecution brought up during cross-examination inconsistencies during the story that kim potter gave over the course of the time. so the judge said all the evidence had been submitted and the jurors have to rely on their own recollection, so essentially didn't answer their questions and sent them back into deliberations. but kim potter is facing those two counts of manslaughter, one in the first degree, the other in the second degree. it c

joining me outside the courtroom is shaquille brewster. good morning. what can we expect today? >> reporter: when court comes in session, and it should happen any minute now, we can expect those opening statements to begin. this is when jurors will essentially get a road map of what this trial and what this case will look like. they can expect to hear and get a preview of the witnesses that will take the stand. they know they will know the evidence that will be brought up by the prosecution. and they could, if the defense decides to give their opening statements, they could get a preview of what kim potter's defense will be when she ultimately takes the stand. we're not expecting that to happen until at least next week. now, potter is facing two counts of manslaughter, one in the first degree, the other in the second degree. the maximum penalty is about 15 years in prison, and that is what will be determined in this trial. and last week, the jury was officially seated. this is a jury that is evenly split between men and women, 14 jurors have been seated, 7 are men, 7 are women,

nbc's shaquille brewster joins us live from michigan. shaq, what do we expect to hear today. >> this announcement is being build as an update on the investigation, but we expect to learn whether or not the prosecutor will charge the parents of that 15-year-old suspected shooter in tuesday's shooting. this is something that since yesterday, she's been saying that a decision on that front would come within 24 hours. and since the shooting, she has signaled that there may be possible charges against the parents. one message she's been harping on and emphasizing is the idea that this has been about possible gun ownership. one point that we heard yesterday was is that it was very few people who knew the shooter had access to a weapon and knew the types of threats that he was making. we don't know what the charges could be, but we do expect some decision to come today. i want you to listen to a little bit of what we heard from the prosecutor later -- yesterday, excuse me. >> you have a right to possess a gun, but with it comes responsibility.

. >> let's go right to shaquille brewster in minnesota. what a couple of days it has been, the mom, girlfriend, what are we expecting today? >> based on the courtroom conversations, we expect to hear from one other officer who was on the scene, sergeant johnson & johnson, on the passenger side -- sergeant johns on the passenger side of wright's vehicle and who kim potterfield fears would have been killed if she let daunte wright get back in the car and drive off. and we heard the powerful testimony of someone stating wright for three weeks or so but had incredible perspective on before and during and after shot. and she says things escalated quickly when wright got back in the car and crashed into another car. and it was that moment, and the body cam video, the dash cam video that you are looking at right there, it was that moment that prosecutors drilled down on with other witnesses yesterday, saying that those responding officers to that crash didn't know basic information, for example, they didn't know daunte wright's condition and they

nbc news correspondent shaquille brewster is in oxford. the lawyer said they are not on the lam but all indications seem to be they are. what is your understanding from your reporting? >> reporter: our understanding is that the man hunt is still well under way. we did contact the under sheriff of this county and he says that he still has not been in contact with the attorneys of those two parents. the now fugitives as they are being called. we have been receiving a lot of conflicting information throughout the afternoon. initially when we heard the charges were filed around noon, apparently there was some rangement to have the parents turn themselves in by 2:00 p.m. instead by 3:00 p.m., there was a message that went b out to law enforcement to be on the look out for these fugitives. as of last check, they have not turned themselves in despite the attorney saying they are not on the run. they left the state out of concern for their own safety and will be returning back for their arraignment. the arraignment that was scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

nbc correspondent shaquille brewster is in minneapolis. harry litman is a legal affairs columnist for "the los angeles times." shaq, it's been roughly 24 hours since the jury announced its verdict. how are people there feeling about the results? >> joe, there's still a lot of surprise, people digesting those results. initially there were fears that if the verdict went the other way, then we would be talking about protests and the reaction to that. but that is not what happened. you heard celebrations instead in front of the courthouse, celebrations and, again, a lot of surprise, especially because of how long this jury took to deliver their verdict. 27 hours where they were tucked away, sequestered for their deliberations over the course of four days. so many people have brought up this point about accountability versus justice, how this is not full justice because daunte wright is still dead, he will not be brought back. but how this is accountability for the action and in the words of the jury, the crime that kim potter took when she sho

. >> shaquille brewster has been covering the potter trial since the beginning. he joins us from minneapolis. the verdict was an emotional moment, but also for the whole community, they had the chauvin trial earlier this year. now this one. how are people in the minneapolis area reacting to the verdict? >> great point. you saw that immediate reaction right as the verdict was being read where there was a crowd of people outside the courthouse on the courthouse grounds. and they broke into cheers and people talked about how surprised they were by this verdict, especially considering the jury took so long to deliberate. 27 hours they were locked away in deliberations over the course of four days. we know from the jury form that that jury returned the first verdict fairly early on tuesday. and it wasn't until yesterday when they actually were able to present both verdicts to the judge. you know, one thing you also heard was the idea that even though this is a conviction and this is what they wanted and many people were celebrating, you also heard the tempered emotion

joining me now is shaquille brewster. walk us through what we're hearing today. >> chris, we're on the fifth witness of the day that has been called by the prosecution. this is an officer that responded to the shooting and the crash that happened after the shooting in brooklyn center on april it started with a very emotional day as we heard from the woman who is dating daunte wright. she walked us through the moments before what happened and what happened that morning, what happened when the car was pulled over, and what halved after he was shot. listen to what happened after that interaction, after the car crash. i just tried to hold it, and i just tried to scream his name and i was just trying to have him talk to me. and i kept saying daunte, just say something, please talk to me. he tried. i know he wanted to. just replaying that image in my head daily. >> reporter: a little bit later in that testimony she apologized to donte wright's mother, who we heard yesterday she got a video call or sent a video call and saw his

frank, former assistant director for counter intelligence for the fbi and shaquille brewster live in michigan. shaq, i'll start with you. what's the mood in the town this evening? the mood earlier today i understand was pretty much anger. >> right now it's grief. there is a prayer vigil happening in downtown oxford has you have members of the community coming together to pray and reflect on the four students who were lost and then those who were injured, some still in the hospital fighting. they're improving according to the prosecutor but still fighting to preserve their life in the hospital at this point. you have a tone of grief now but you have a tone of accountability coming from the prosecutor earlier today when she filed these charges, these four charges of involuntarily manslaughter against the parents and right now there is tension, as well, because those parents are still on the loose there is still a very active manhunt for the parents despite the conflicting messages we've been hearing. it was about 12:00 p.m. when authorities started looking for these parents. they knew

shaquille brewster is live in pontiac, michigan at the sheriff's office, we're expecting the parents to make their first court appearance soon, definitely a dramatic end to this manhunt. >> definitely a dramatic end, we're expecting the parents sometime this morning, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., appearing via video for that arraignment. we know that arraignment was supposed to have happened yesterday, after a massive manhunt. it started about noon p.m. yesterday when we had the county prosecutor announce those charges of involuntary manslaughter, or involuntary manslaughter against those parents. they never turned themselves in despite prior communication between their attorneys and the county sheriff by 3:00 p.m. there was a be on the lookout advisory that went out to local law enforcement, and we saw late into the evening we got wanted posters with a $10,000 reward for any information leading to their arrest. well, there was a tip that went into the detroit pd around 10:30 p.m. last night leading to that massive foot search for them in detroit, and they are eventually apprehen

. >> joining me now is nbc news correspondent shaquille brewster from pontiac, michigan. former assistant prosecuting attorney in oakland county, michigan, tom cranmer, and former u.s. attorney joyce vance. shaq, when are the parents going to be sitting for their own arraignments? >> we can see those parents now suspected or now charged at their own arraignment in court later this afternoon. one thing you heard from this prosecutor is those only two individuals, the two parents of this 15-year-old suspect, they were the only ones who knew that there was concern about this 15-year-old. they were the only ones who knew in addition to that that there were disturbing images of him drawing pictures of shooting other people and they were the only ones who knew in combination with that that he had access to a gun. and the prosecutor is saying they did not tell anyone about that, they did not do anything about that. that's why you have those four charges of involuntary manslaughter that they are facing. there will likely be an arraignment this afternoon. the investigation, broadl

brewster covering the case from the courthouse tonight >> reporter: shep, potter testified for about two hours and was incredibly emotional throughout her testimony at one point her defense team even calling for a lunch break as she struggled to recount the moments before the shooting. throughout the trial we heard her defense team argue the use of force was justified because of potter's concern that the officer on the passenger side of the vehicle was at risk of getting seriously hurt if wright drove off. potter described that fear on the stand. >> i can see sergeant johnson and the driver struggling over the gearshift because i can see johnson's hand and then i can see his face he had a look of fear on his face it's nothing i'd seen before >> reporter: but under cross-examination potter said she never intended to use deadly force, and prosecutors questioned the level of threat that she believed wright posed >> you never saw a weapon on mr. wright, did you? >> no. >> you never saw a gun >> no. >> he never threw a punch? right? >> no. >> never kicked anyone >> no. >> never said "i'm

. >> let's go right to nbc's shaquille brewster joining me from pontiac, michigan, i know you've been covering this really horrific story all week. what can you tell us about the overnight hours into this morning? >> yeah, that arraignment that you saw with the parents of this 15-year-old suspected school shooter, it was the first time we saw them in court since his original arraignment earlier this week, and it was an arraignment that was scheduled yesterday at 4:00 p.m. we know that yesterday around noon, that's when the charges were initially filed. those four counts of involuntary manslaughter, but by 3:00 p.m. yesterday, a message went out to local law enforcement to be on the lookout for these two suspects. they didn't turn themselves in and didn't appear to that original arraignment. well, after the overnight hours, they were eventually apprehended in the detroit, michigan, area, and it's for that reason that the prosecutor was arguing for a $500,000 bond and the judge cried with the prosecutor. listen to the argument that the prosecutor made in the court earlier today. >> inst

joining me right now is nbc news correspondent shaquille brewster out of a warehouse that processes returns in greenville, indiana. there may be one or two things that i thought -- and i may or may not be right. >> i won't ask what gift you're referring to, i promise you that. that sound you just played stuck out because it is so frustrating. none of it is free. none of the free returns we hear about are not really free, especially when you hear about all the returned items. we're talking about $6.77 billion being returned, and many of the returns end up in places like this, not the original store shelf but the warehouse where you see each pallet. there are 6,000 of them in this warehouse alone. all of these are returned goods and this is aided by the company called restock, which takes the returns and helps resell them to third party sites. they're not going back on the shelves but to consumers in other ways. the chief operating officer, listen to what he says about these returns. >> we see things going back on the shelves in brand new condition. but the bulk of that, the rest of that, is

nbc's shaquille brewster remains camped outside that courthouse. shaq, the prosecution laying heavily into potter's experience and her training while on the force. what are some moments that stood out to you? >> well, the closing arguments are still underway right now. they are just about halfway through, it appears, of the arguments in. you hear as you mention, them leaning into the idea that this was an experienced officer. this is an officer who was on the force for 26 years and who knew the difference between a gun and a taser. and in -- what she calls a mistake in shooting daunte wright. the prosecution is saying they believe this is a mistake. they're not trying to say it was intentional, but in her mistake in him, she acted recklessly. that's the first degree count, or the second degree count she acted with negligence. they're walking the jury through the legal terms, the legal definition, the five elements they must prove for the individual counts. and you expect to see the defense come back once the closing arguments are done and say that

joining me now is nbc news correspondent shaquille brewster, katie phang joins us as well as. shaq, can we take "outcome" to mean verdict? >> we believe it will be a verdict but the court is saying it is an outcome. and this outcome has come as a result of 27 1/2 hours that the jury has been away deliberating since they first received the case on monday. remember, this has been, at least in the past day and a half, a pretty quiet jury. they have not released any questions yesterday. we do know that they were deliberating for about nine hours. but over the course of their entire deliberations, they did submit three questions. one of the questions signaled that they may have been struggling to reach a consensus. >> shaq, i'm so sorry, the judge has just walked into the courtroom and she's speaking. we'll listen. shaq, i may have jumped the gun a bit, they're going to bring in the jury. i'm sorry, continue with what you were saying. >> no problem at all, and please feel free to stop me once the jury gets in. we do know over the course of the deliberations, three questions have be

shaquille brewster has been following this trial from minneapolis and also with us is katie fang, an msnbc legal contributor and co-host of money court on cnbc. shaq, it took the jury 27 hours to deliberate. you were there all day yesterday when there was a lot of reaction outside the courthouse. what are we hearing from both sides and also what are the next steps? >> yeah. you are still hearing a lot of surprise. it was partially because of how long it took the jury to deliberate. those 27 hours over the course of four days, they were locked away, tucked away in those deliberations. one thing that we realized from the verdict form is that the jury came to the agreement on the second count fairly quickly. they came to that agreement on tuesday, but they were held up the next day and a half on that first degree manslaughter count that kim potter was convicted of. she faces up to 15 years in prison. she's waking up in the jail for a first full day this morning. but, again, you go back to the reaction that you saw outside of the courthouse yesterday. and the surprise that you heard. i w

shaquille brewster is following that trial from outside the courthouse. i want to bring in a legal analyst and civil rights attorney and former prosecutor. shaq, let me start with you. again, court right now in recess. how soon could we expect to see potter on the stand? and what have we heard from the defense so far this morning? >> reporter: well, it's possible, craig, possible that potter will be on the stand in about 20 minutes when court resumes. we know the defense said that plan to call two witnesses today and they processed through the first witness. we'll keep an eye on whether potter is the first witness to be called. the first witness was a psychologist who the defense brought up to help explain what they say happened when potter yelled taser, taser, taser and fired a gunshot into the heart of donte wright. he's explaining essentially it being tunnel vision. using terms like action error and slip and capture and teaching the jury about those terms while not directly saying potter suffered or went through that or experienced those conditions. th

nbc's shaquille brewster is with us in pontiac, michigan. news on multiple fronts. we expect to hear more from the sheriff. we showed the microphone where we expect to hear from officials. what are the outstanding questions that you have that we hope to be answered here? >> reporter: really, it is what more they have in this investigation. we know the sheriff earlier today, he knocked down some rumors that they had a heads-up, that there was some reporting on this shooting, at least reports that they got ahead of the shooting. he said that is not true. he said early last month, they did get some threats, but it wasn't directed at the school. the school wasn't even in this state. so we expect to hear more from him and the latest in this investigation. we do know that the suspect, that 15-year-old sophomore at the high school that is accused of opening fire, killing those four people, sending another eight to the hospital, we do know he is still in custody at this point. you mentioned those charges announced by the prosecutor in the past hour. that terrorism charge. s

shaquille brewster is outside the courthouse now. testimony ended friday with an emotional potter taking the stand. what do you think we'll get today? >> reporter: well, stephanie, after those eight days of testimony, which included more than 30 witnesses who took the stand, you mentioned the last witness was kim potter, the defendant herself. this is the point we hear the prosecution and the defense wrap up their arguments and tie it into the law. it's going to start with jury instructions. it'll be read by the judge, more than a dozen pages of jury instructions where the judges will instruct the jurors on the law, what factors to consider and what factors the prosecution needs to prove. potter is charged with manslaughter, one count in the first degree and one in the second. the highest degree carries up to 15 years in prison. prosecutors will argue this is a veteran officer who has been on the force more than 26 years. she should have known the difference between a taser and a firearm, they say. kim potter through her attorneys wi

we're going to start with shaquille brewster, sam brock, and dr. tyson bell from the university of virginia. shaq, you're at one of the hospital where u.s. navy medical workers are on the scene. what are you seeing? >> this is an example of what we heard from president biden yesterday. he said that, yes, states will take the lead in responding to this new surge, but there will be federal support this is a team of military members, 20 military members arriving at this hospital for a month-long deployment. and while they -- i did speak to some in the command staff who are in that military uniform, many of the people going in, part of the military are essentially integrating with the hospital staff. hospital staff here say that the situation is dire. a doctor telling me when they did the sequencing, they're still dealing with the effects of the delta variant, not even this new variant that we're dealing with. so they're being stretched to the capacity and they see what's coming ahead. this help came at the perfect time. i want you to listen to some of

i want to share that with you, as we bring back in shaquille brewster. an attorney for the couple contacted law enforcement, said she represented them, she would make arrangements for the arraignment. it was supposed to be 16 minutes from there. guess what? they don't know where those parents are. the attorney contacted detectives again saying she had tried to reach the parents by phone, tried to call them, text them, she couldn't get ahold of them. this is what we're learning. the attorney is telling the sheriff's office she doesn't know where the parents are. there is now a search vochg the fbi, the u.s. marshals a fugitive apprehension team, it appears to be a full-on manhunt to find where these parents are. i want to bring back in shaq brewster. obviously a significant development here. do we know anything else as you have been working the story there, anything else about what's happened or what is happening behind the scenes? >> reporter: it's a very active manhunt. it involves the fbi, involves the u.s. marshals, all looking for the two parents of
