south lake tahoe put out an essential travelers alert today. we are trying to keep up with the demand on 50, but today we got impacted, unfortunately, we lost, we did reopen and there was a jackknife incident that happened. so it's caused a lot of congestion. so eastbound, westbound u.s. 50 was closed for a long time. we were able to reopen. because i-80 was closed there was a jam traffic. >> i had a friend that said it took her 12 hours. people say it's open though, but you say it's at capacity. what does that mean? it's so full, emergency vehicles couldn't get through? you want to keep the highway less congested? >> well, we only opened u.s. 50 when we knew emergency vehicles were going to be able to get through. a lot of people were saying why can't you just plow one lane? then emergency vehicles can't get to incident. there are a lot of people traveling to the sierra for the holidays, either before christmas, after christmas eve or on christmas day. you have all those travelers coming in, and then everybody wants to try to get out or get ba

south lake tahoe, still a winter storm warning in effect until 1:00 a.m. on tuesday. so definitely don't recommend even trying to get up there. the roads are closed off. download the nbc bay area app. it's free and gives you the latest updates on road closures and all of that. we were at 130 over the weekend. now at 146% of statewide average. that is fantastic news. so over the next seven days, here's a closer look. rain to shower activity for tomorrow. but the big story will be how cold it's going to get. notice in the inland areas we're only topping out in the 40s. overnight lows could dip into the 20s in some of those sheltered valleys. and as we head in towards thursday and friday, things really start to calm down just in time for new year's eve. not expecting any rain into the first weekend of the new year, but we are expecting cold weather. look at the overnight lows in the 30s. by midnight, probably low 30s. so if you have plans to be out and about, you'll want to bundle up. we're also monitoring heading into new year's eve, the low clouds and potential for fog

south lake tahoe. you still remained under severe drought conditions. but most of this year, as you can see, noticing a huge improvement thanks to the feet of snow that you've gotten from the recent storms and the most recent atmospheric river, the same for the bay area as well. we went from extreme to severe drought. so that's why we're seeing more of that orange tan color and even the east bay. those of you saw improvement from exceptional drought now to extreme. so overall the entire bay area. so a huge improvement with our drought monitor map. just released today rainfall summary as you could see, still remaining above average anywhere from about a 150 to 250% of average and we still have about 3 more months to go for a wet season. so let's hope that january and february as we head into the new year. also brings us some more storms. but right now we're getting a much needed break from the wet weather. in fact, was hard for me to find my sunglasses today in the purse finally had to use it today and radar for tracking a lot of sun glare out there. som
