there are two in tennessee, tennessee state and the university of tennessee. these institutions receive funding to focus on teaching and practical agriculture, science and engineering. when i became president of tsu we looked at the funds that had not been distributed to tsu. we look at the funny the other land-grant had received and wondered why there was no match for tennessee state university. additionally, there was additional funding required that the state had a ruling that tennessee state would receive one third of the amount of funds that the other institution received. there was nothing in the budget for tennessee state, nothing. for 50 years there was nothing in the budget to even account for it. this speaks to the need for more oversight in other areas we can get to. but the underfunding was calculated in the late 1950's to the present and the number came to $150 million to $544 million. we are working with the state legislature, working with the committee put together last fall to ensure that tsu enter into conversations about the money that we are
