nbc news's morgan chesky joins us live. bring us up to speed on the latest, what we know about the attacker, the hostage taker, and what's going on inside. >> yeah. a very fluid situation. in colleyville, we are about a quarter mail away from congregation beth israel synagogue and we have some developments that have happened in the last half-hour or so. the colleyville police have said that at least one person has been released and will be reunited with family. important to know, there are no reported injuries at this time. as far as the hostages inside that synagogue go, we know a rabbi was taken hostage and three or four others. that was prior to the release of this hostage. police say this began around 11:00 a.m. this morning. that's when they received a phone call that there was an ongoing situation happening here. they arrived to find out that a man believed to be armed that had entered that synagogue during the services and had begun taking hostages. this service was being broadcast on facebook, streaming and there wa

joining me now is morgan chesky. morgan? >> reporter: good morning. the headline coming out of this community today is the four hostages safe and sound. we know they have been reunited with each of their family members after this incredibly tense ordeal that played out for the better part of yesterday not too far from where i'm standing. this is still an active scene. authorities are gathering evidence. after the rescue of the hostages, they spoke with each of them for hours trying to learn more about what took place inside that place of worship, starting around 10:41 a.m. that's when the phone call first went out to the local police department saying that there was some sort of situation ongoing. when they arrived, they confirmed the fact that a man had ended that building and started to make demands. some of which were heard on a live stream of the synagogue services saturday, before it was cut off. it was at that point that we saw a massive convergence of law enforcement arrive, both at the federal and state level. we know fbi hostage negotiators f

joining me now is morgan chesky in texas. what's the latest this morning? >> reporter: good morning. the latest is, this is a very active investigation. you can see the police presence behind me. e are roads blocked off in a smaller perimeter than what we witnessed last night but still a perimeter around congregation beth israel synagogue. they are trying to find out more about that 11-hour standoff. one of the key pieces of information that will be helping them is the fact this they were able to debrief each of the hostages that were released last night after they were rescued. they spent hours speaking with . it started around 10:45 yesterday when police were first alerted to this ongoing situation. that resulted in the release of one hostage, a man, around 6:00 p.m. local time and remaining three rescued about four hours later. this is important to note, fbi hostage negotiators flew to texas when this was started to be well-known. they established a dialogue with this gunman who was inside. they said it was a relatively consistent dialogue throughout the

let's bring in nbc's morgan chesky live on the scene and chief investigative reporter jonathan dean. what is happening on the ground right now? >> reporter: very tense situation playing out as we speak. we are about a quarter mile from congregation beth israel's synagogue where this hostage situation is taking place. that's according to three senior law enforcement officials who say earlier this afternoon they were made aware that a man had entered the synagogue and took the rabbi and a potentially unknown number of others hostage and is asking for the release of a federal prisoner you mentioned. we have seen a large amount of law enforcement converge on the scene. we know the s.w.a.t. team is present near the synagogue, and we are outside of the perimeter that's about a quarter mile away. we do know that there is some sort of communication ongoing between that man inside the synagogue and officials, however we don't know exactly what's being said at this point in time. an incredibly disturbing audio recording, the services inside the synagogue that were being broadcast over facebook

morgan chesky has been following the story. what more do we know about this prior british intelligence investigation? >> reporter: it is interesting. a british security source confirmed this morning that he was the center of a low level investigation for about a month by mi-5 back in 2020. it originally began, according to this source, because they were looking into whether or not he may have been involved in a potential terrorist plot. over the course of that month, the source says the evidence found was insufficient to continue the investigation. so at that point, it essentially ended and/or was tabled. okram's name joins a list of 40,000 others in the u.k. that at one point or another have been under investigation for similar allegations. again, we've also learned from a senior law enforcement official that he had arrived in the united states at jfk airport on december 29th. just within the last 24 hours we've learned he was in the dallas area for several days prior to walking into that synagogue on saturday. a local homeles

. >> nbc's morgan chesky is outside that synagogue, just outside dallas. morgan, what do authorities know at this point about the hostage taker's motive, or do they? >> reporter: yeah. that is a very good question that they are actively looking into. you can see the synagogue is still closed identify. the perimeter has been reduced since the situation took place for the better part of the day saturday. and this is an investigation, craig, that has become international in nature. the suspect here has been identified as a 44-year-old british citizen. he also we know his two sons were taken into custody by manchester police over the weekend according to a senior law enforcement official for questioning. we've been told that they are not considered suspects. the fbi has said they do believe the man acted alone, but they're trying to gather as much evidence as they can about this individual. we've also learned that he arrived at jfk airport on december 29th. his listed destination was a hotel in queens. we don't even know if he arrived there before making his j

let's bring in nbc news' morgan chesky. and nbc chief investigator officer morgan dean. morgan, what are you seeing on the ground? >> well, a wide perimeter has been set up around congregation beth israel synagogue in colleyville, that is 30 miles outside dallas, alicia. authorities have been on the scene for hours. we learned from colleyville police this call came in for them to respond at 10:41 local time this morning. that is when they found out that this hostage situation had developed and that a man believed to be armed had entered that building where they were holding services at the time. that's what started this ongoing dialogue that is still happening as we speak. we do know that this man who is believed to have been taken at least a rabbi and three others hostage inside synagogue is in ongoing talks with federal authorities. fbi hostage negotiators are on scene. we don't know how the talks are going at this point in time, but we do know that they are within communication of each other. in the meantime, this all took place, alicia, with the services from the syn
