katie: i couldn't agree more. i would emphasize, i think that 10% figure that you're giving, i think that's for premiums and deductibles. so, for folks who were receiving these surprise bills, they were paying even more than that for, again, costs that they didn't even anticipate. soledad: so then what's the best strategy to lower healthcare costs? katie: in the united states, we just pay so much more for health care than many other -- it's sort of "it's the prices, stupid." and so, you know, we're paying so much more, it's about 20% of our gdp, which means a fifth of our economy is driven by healthcare. i think, over time, it's going to be looking at those prices that people are actually being charged. it's going to be probably focused on value-based care, making sure we're actually getting those outcomes for the amount that we're investing. but it's going to take a lot of work. soledad: is there anything that you see on the horizon where you could at least have some consistency in costs, right? that, that even i

i'm katy tur. we're learning new details about the man behind a hostage situation at a synagogue in texas. malik faisal akram, a british national, was identified as the hostage taker. he was killed during the standoff. now british authorities say two teenagers are being detained and a law enforcement official tells nbc news the teens are akram's sons. akram held a rabbi and three congregants at gunpoint for ten hours inside the synagogue. a live stream initially set up for virtual prayer services captured negotiations with police as well as the suspect's shouts. in that livestream, the gunman could be heard saying he targeted the synagogue because the united states only cares about jewish lives. during the standoff, akram demanded the release of aafia siddiqui, a pakistani neuroscientist who is currently serving a federal prison sentence in fort worth, texas, fewer than 25 miles from that synagogue. siddiqui was convicted by a federal jury in 2010 for the attempted killing of u.s. officers in afgha

i'm katy tur. new numbers today confirming, no, it's not just you, everything is more expensive than it was a year ago. across the board prices rose by 7% in 2021, the fastest increase we've seen since reagan was in office. it costs more to eat. bread, meat, fish and eggs are all up a whopping 12.5%. a pound of bacon just over $5 last year. $6.50 today. it costs more to sleep. rent and mortgage is up 4%. that means if you were paying $2,000 in rent every month, you might be looking at an $80 increase going forward. almost $1,000 more for the entire year. it costs more to get around as well. used cars are up 37%, a $20,000 car is now more than $27,000. and it costs a lot more to drive it as well. gas prices are up 50%, despite a dip in those costs at the end of last year. all of this, as you well know, adds up, especially when salaries are not keeping up. take all of this inflation into account, and the average earnings by the hour, hourly earnings, actually fell. you've been told not to worry about
