so people are probably wondering do i need a kn-95 or n-95 mask. it comes down to individual risk for underlying health and what you'll tolerate. a koth mask is suboptimal and say i'm high risk, i can't afford exposure. i think with i have examples of masks n-95 and kn-95 masks that are less than a dollar a pop. if we can show those sites where folks went to purchase them. i went to the sites and they're available. however, that's still expensive because when we talk about not wanting to reuse the masks for more than say a few uses, if you live in a sunny place, you went to the grocery store, put that mask after you take it off in front of the sun for a few hours and you can rewear it. i recommend no more than two uses. it gets to the point here we have a list of medications that are dirt cheap for people that absolutely need those essential medications. this concept of making masks freely available, packets of masks for everybody in the united states, high-quality masks i think it's essential. i think the risks we face across the country, wild fir

kn-95 or n-95 masks. we talked about this on your program for a long time now, saying, why not just recommend those masks, especially given the contagiousness of this virus and the new variants. in fact, i asked dr. walensky and dr. fauci about this at a town hall, maybe close to a year ago. listen to what they said. why not recommend it, especially with these more transmissible variants? >> yeah, it is a really good question and one we get a lot. i have spent a reasonable amount of time in an n-95 mask. they're hard to tolerate all day, every day. in fact, when you really think about how well people will wear them, i worry that if we suggest or require that people wear n-95s, they won't we them all the time. they're very hard to breathe in when you wear them properly. they're hard to tolerate when you wear them long periods of time. >> you know, that surprised me, again, a little bit. a lot of people have been wearing these masks now over the past year. yeah, they are a mask, so you do have to be conscio

if you want a kn-95 is fine. there is a gradation of capability of preventing you from getting infected and from you transmitting it to someone else. so we should be wearing the best possible mask we can get. >> the kn 95 is another fit tradition mask but finding one of these can be trickier. it is a chinese standard, meaning none of these are currently approved in the united states. even worse, the cdc says about 60% of the masks are fake, yes, even the ones you buy online. >> there's no way to tell if the manufacturer has met the qualifications or not. it is difficult for a person to discern whether or not it's a safe mask. >> while it doesn't mean all kn 9 5s are bad, but it means you will have to do your homework, checking to see if the manufacturer has a valid lab report. >> we recommend better filtration masks and a general public mask standard so we can cover all the range of masks that people want to use. we can go abouting to pretty much normal quote-unquote life if we all had really good respirators. >>
