kristen: right. i also want to talk about in the op-ed, you mentioned we need to retire the policy of school closures and the cancellation of school sporting events based on asymptomatic testing. how does it make you feel right now that the cdc is almost going the opposite direction as far as school sporting events, especially indoor ones like basketball, wrestling, and several school district have closed school districts the past couple of weeks. i guess you could argue it was due to asymptomatic testing with teachers not being available. what do you make of all that? dr. gandhi: i think we are in the transition on the pandemic to the endemic phase. the cdc has on one set of guidelines that if you test positive and are a symptomatically, go to work -- and are a symptomatically -- asymptomatically, go to work. everything is pretty much a mess right now, and i don't think anything can change, and i think schools will be closed and sports will be closed until we get through this omicron surge. isolatio

kristen: welcome back. teachers and multiple oakland schools are staging sick out over concerns they will get infected with covid and bring it home to loved ones. this comes after more than 600 san francisco teachers called out yesterday. teachers are saying they do not feel the districts have done enough to keep them safe. joining us to talk about that and the challenges oakland unified is facing is john. how many oakland teachers were out sick today? >> today, right around 500. kristen: how many schools had to be nonoperational because of that? >> we had 12 schools, nine high schools, two middle schools, and one lemon tree schools that were not operational. we did not have students on campus. kristen: open but no students on campus. what about childcare? >> that is one of the big challenges we face when something like this happens. it puts a lot of of of of o a serious bind because they still have to go to work on a day like today and they may not have access to childcare on short notice. unfortunately, w

kristen: all right. certainly i know teens have a lower vaccination rate than older grown-ups, but then again, they have a higher vaccination rate in five to 11 and you said those numbers are lower, and that can be due to the lifestyle. just less mixing. dr. bardach: one thing is less mixing in that younger age group. they mix, but not the same way high schoolers and middle schoolers makes. and the second piece is we have known throughout the pandemic, younger seem to have less symptoms even if they have covid. so what testing is often triggered by the symptoms, so we might be picking up more any 12 to 17-year-olds compared to five to 11-year-olds currently because five to 11-year-olds are less likely to be symptomatic and therefore less likely to get tested. kristen: knowing what we know about the outcomes of younger people who do get infected, especially in this current wave of omicron, how concerned are you? concerned or very concerned, that 12 to 17s have a higher positivity right now? dr. bardach: i

kristen: got it. how do they make the test shorter but still provide enough feedback and information about what the student really knows and does not know? bruce: right. there's really kind of a third group affected by the change, and that is the makers of the test. one of the interesting details is this will take on a dynamic format, meeting it is no longer a static test that obviously paper and pencil mandates. with technology, they can essentially create a more adaptive test that create -- that gets smarter about the test-taker, so it understands earlier on in the test how the test-taker is performing and can be more with the questions it presents to the student. the goal of creating any good test is to make it as short as you possibly can while still measuring the thing that you are trying to measure. technology and adaptability really allows test makers to get for targeted with the questions being asked and effectively not waste questions that are just not useful in differentiation. kristen: got

last question to you, kristen welker. you are in south carolina talking particularly with african american voters. you are in south carolina today, i'm going to georgia tomorrow for really the same reasons. in the primary it was south carolina that made biden president, the nominee and in georgia it gave him the power one party power to begin his presidency there. what are you hearing from voters you've been talking to? >> reporter: well, that's right, chuck. i mean, if president biden has a base it is with african american voters here in south carolina. they helped deliver him the nomination and ultimately the presidency. i have spoken to a number of african american voters this morning who tell me they knocked on doors, they've fought for candidate biden to win the presidency and now they do not feel as though he has delivered on some key promises to them including helen bradley who lives in hopkins, south carolina, that's a rural county outside of columbia. she says that the top issue for her is voting rights. she feel
